I spent the past weekend in Evansville. Although it’s not the most exciting city on Earth, it’s where my almost-96 year old Grandmother lives so we came for a visit. We had all day Saturday to spend together and I’d seen information about the Rietz Home Museum posted in the airport and thought it would be right up Grandma’s alley, and one of the few things around that’s older than she! When I called to make sure an elderly person, who moves a little slowly and needs many things to be repeated, would easily be accommodated, the person on the phone was patient and understanding of our needs. She assured me that there would be places to sit and rest, if need be, and that we’d likely have our own tour and could move at our own pace or repeat information as necessary. GREAT! When we arrived to the home we checked in at the desk and met Shannon, the kind girl who answered my call. I can’t say enough great things about Shannon! She first arranged for the group of three who entered before us to be on a tour which was just beginning so we’d have a tour of our very own. While going through the house she was sure to keep Grandma’s best interest in mind. We walked through the first floor in its entirety first, giving G-ma the option to go upstairs if she pleased. Thanks to careful planning between Shannon and the other docent, our tours weaved through the rooms seamlessly as we were on an untraditional path. Grandma wouldn’t miss the upstairs sights and we spent over an hour taking in the beautiful home. We were even finishing up 5 minutes past closing time and Shannon didn’t bat an eye. The house itself is incredible, historic, and filled with treasures of a past way of life. Thanks to Shannon we all got to enjoy our time there, especially Grandma! She must have said 100 times«I’d hate to clean this place!»

A great historic home in downtown Evansville that has been beautifully preserved and restored to what it would have looked like. Having living in savannah I have seen my share of historic homes and this one can definitely contend with any home in savannah. The staff was very friendly and pretty up n up on the history of the home. It was inexpensive as I am a student and think it is a must see if you have the time.

every time i go back to visit southern indiana, i at least walk by and check out the reitz home. every several years i take a tour. i love historic homes, and that museum and neighborhood are particularly special to me. i was twelve the first time i toured the space. it was common for me to take friends when i could drive myself down there. i love to walk along the tree lined street… when in high school i would get a baguette from that french bakery downtown(does anyone know what happened to that) and walk around eating it and soaking up the lovely architecture of the lovely homes that our founding river barons had built for themselves.

When I lived in Evansville(from ages 6 – 14), we would take class trips to the Reitz Home. I didn’t start to really appreciate it until I was learning and understanding the concept of historical value, but I was impressed each time. They have donated items from the Reitz family that make the home feel as though the family themselves might be living there still. Each room is decorated beautifully and there’s a rich history to the home. If you’re in Evansville, don’t pass this up.
