This is a fascinating place to get a glimpse of the Mississippian culture that existed here long ago. It’s $ 5 to see the museum exhibit and walk around the grounds. If you’re in the area, take an hour or so here to learn about Native American culture. Nothing fancy but you’ll learn something, no doubt, and it’s a quiet and peaceful experience.

I was here over Memorial Day weekend, and really enjoyed looking through the museum and walking around out near the mounds. There seems to be less fanfare here than at Cahokia(another ancient Native American community, near Edwardsville, IL), but the sites are equally impressive. I especially liked that we pretty much had the entire place to ourselves.

After seeing Cahokia, my interest in the Mississippian culture has developed such that I needed to see more. This particular complex is a Natl. Historic Landmark. It is noted as being the best preserved prehistoric site in North America.
