This is a cute little shop. They have lots of lovely, wonderful yarn, as well as notions and books/patterns. The owner is really friendly and helpful too. Shopping for yarn in person is so much better than shopping online. Support your local yarn store! :)

I bopped in here first thing when I arrived to Evanston just to see what new yarn they had. I must have arrived at a bad time for the shopkeeper/owner, because as I was looking through a cubbie, and piling skeins into my lap, she hovered behind me and asked how many skeins was I looking for? I replied that I didn’t know; I just wanted to look over what was there and decide. «Well, everything that’s available can be seen without taking it out,» she shot back. Whoa! Was I store-shopping or in somebody’s home disturbing her personal shelves? I decided the yarn I’d located was worth more than letting her odd behavior chase me away without it, so I stayed long enough to purchase the(over-priced) yarn. Maybe she’d dealt with a snarky phone call before I walked in or received some unwanted news, but it was an odd way to treat a repeat customer.

Good local shop. The owner is very helpful and welcoming. Maybe not the largest yarn selection, but good basics.

I went in to look for a few items and the owner was engaged in a conversation with someone that I can only assume to be an employee. I felt out of place and as though I was imposing. I asked a few questions about the project I was working on but I felt like I was interrupting. Very awkward. So awkward in fact I most likely will not be returning.

This is a good shop owned by a wonderful woman. She is always very helpful, has good suggestions when asked for them and offers a bunch of really good yarn. Her husband also has a related blog that is about his knitting experience which is very amusing. As a local, this is the best yarn shop in the area. I honestly enjoy every visit and always look forward to going back. Be sure to sign up for the newsletter, she always announces sales that way.

I love this shop! The owner is extremely knowledgable and her friendly classes give me the confidence to try«stretch» projects. She has a great selection of yarns with many helpful sample so it’s easy to visualize what something will look like.

Montoya Fiber is a gem of a shop, tucked a few steps off Evanston’s Central Street Shopping District, across the street from Jackie’s on Prairie(formerly Jackie’s Bistro.) Yes, the shop is small, but it’s the kind of place you don’t rush in to, you look around and find all sorts of delights wherever you look. It’s not every store that you can find qiviut(kiviut) the magical yarn made from Musk Ox underfur. I’ve found it there.(Amazing stuff!) Cathy stocks a lovely selection of yarns, quality tools, and some made– up pieces to buy or be inspired by. A couple of years ago, I got a group of gals that I work with to come there for a weekly lunch-hour knitting class. Cathy proved to be a very able(and patient) teacher and taught me to knit European style, as the usual American style was more awkward for me. Montoya Fiber is worth a trip. You’ll probably find something you like or be inspired by.

Very cute shop and the lady was very helpful to a novice like myself. She explained yarn weights to me and looked up a pattern. I will be back next time I am in the area.

I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful(though more knit knowledgeable than crochet and I crochet.) But not many places cater as much so I can’t hold it against them. Nice yarns selection and even a variety of «interesting» types that certainly inspired fun projects from me. If you’re shopping in the area and knit and/or crochet, take a peak.

This is one of my favourite yarn shops. I’ve gotten some great deals here, and the selection is wonderful – everything from Malabrigo to higher quality acrylics. There’s a good mix of crochet and knitting books and magazines. Prices are very reasonable, and I’ve found the owner to be helpful when I’ve asked. I do wish it was open a little later, but only because I have to wait until the weekends to go!

Montoya Fiber studio is still my favorite yarn shop, and I’ve been to them all. Kathy’s yarns are priced right, she has lots of wool and alpalca blends, and has always been very helpful to me in selecting the right yarn for my current project. She gives lessons on Saturdays, but if I have a problem at another time, she is willing to help me figure it out. I like the samples that Kathy shows; it gives me a better idea of how to use a particular yarn and I get ideas for projects. And she usually will give you the pattern for a sweater or shawl that’s hanging on the wall.

I was VERY disappointed with this yarn shop. I am such a yarn junkie, so I was thrilled to discover a new shop. However, the shop was stuffed with things and very cluttered so even if I had something in mind, it would have been near impossible to find it. Furthermore, the yarn selection was terrible. It felt more as if the shop was packed to the brims with«stuff» rather than actual knitting supplies. Additionally, the yarn that they did have I was not all that thrilled with. Great location, but lacks everything else I expect from a knitting shop. I will not be back.

I visited this shop very briefly while I was in Evanston, because it was on my way home. The owner carries soem really nice, high-end yarn. She has Misti Alpaca, Manos del Uruguay, Malabrigo… I was there to get some Manos, and bought a gorgeous skein of varigated yarn. The shop is really small, so it’s one of those where you pretty much go to buy your yarn and get out. I believe she offers classes, but there’s not really any space for someone to just come and work on a project. One thing I appreciate about this store is that she is open 7 days a week, and the hours are the same for 5 of them. A lot of yarn shops are either open only a few days per week, or have really wacky hours that no one can ever remember, so this is a big plus!
