Having enjoyed sushi in restaurants from New York to Hawaii, this is consistently the best sushi I’ve had. The drink offerings are also amazing. Request Jane as your server for a great dining experience. If you have had better sushi with better service at a better price, please cite the purveyor in your review of this restaurant because I would love to try it!

We’ve frequented Coast a number of times + ordered in and are always left with the same feeling — way too expensive — quality is a average The speciality rolls like volcano and others are $ 13 and not so special. Our last experience — with 2 kids and no alcohol set us back $ 90 with tip, if it was amazing, maybe could have been ok with the cost but all rolls with avocado were mushy and the presentation was subpar The one positive is the outdoor seating, other than that stick with Whole Foods, Sea Ranch or others that will surpass the quality at half the cost

My husband actually spotted this place while going to visit our son in the hospital. I hadn’t eaten sushi in forever(since I had been pregnant) and I was craving sushi! This was a pleasant surprise and I’m so glad he found it. It was a little difficult to find parking but we found a paid spot off the street. We were initially greeted and seated quickly. The décor is beautiful, with modern dark accents, which makes for a very relaxed setting. I loved the tea lights on the table. It wasn’t too noisy either. We ordered the special appetizer, a rice wrapped in salmon and topped with more spicy salmon. It was delicious! It should be a roll! We then ordered the white dragon roll, the volcano roll, and special roll, the angry salmon. We also had a fried edamame starter which was free, with two sauces, a creamy spicy mayo and some other sauce that was a little spicier than the other. I’m not an edamame fan but this would make me eat it all day as a snack! I couldn’t have been happier. Everything was so so fresh and our waitress was superb. We were never thirsty and she described the food so delicately and precisely that I was hooked. I’n sure all the rolls are amazing. We paired our dinner with a Pinot and a Sauvignon Blanc, both from New Zealand, which went well with everything. I’m so glad we dined here and I can’t wait to go back! It was a great way to celebrate being able to do sushi again and have a date night well deserved since we hadn’t had one in a while.

I’m a big fan! The service is very good and the sushi is better. They are great about accommodating special requests. While it is expensive, they do offer a cash discount which is appreciated.

Coast gave me a restaurant experience I never had. My wife had sushi and I ordered sea bass My wife said the sushi was just OK. My meal was fishy and did not taste right. If fact I do not think it was even sea bass. I told the waitress the fish was not good. She sent over the manager who said she would have it checked out. She came back and said she would discount the meal on our bill. Thinking she would take the meal off the bill. To my surprise she discounted my bill 10%. For a $ 3,90 discount. They will never see us again. I almost felt like giving them the $ 3.90 back as they seem to need it more then me Mediocre sushi and a zero on my meal plus a zero on customer service Not a place worth going to

I’m a self-proclaimed sushi snob and I was pleasantly surprised by how good everything was! Loved the nigiri and the wasabi roll was also excellent. I recommend the tuna tartare appetizer as well.

If it weren’t for the gyoza and tempura seaweed, this review would be 3 stars. The sauces for the free tempura seaweed appetizer were delicious and I loved the gyoza. My ginger beer and starters were good but I was not very impressed by the sushi. It was extremely chewy and difficult to swallow. A lot of the pieces are too big and I am not sure if the seaweed or fish is chewier. I think there are much better places for sushi. However the atmosphere was cute and we had a nice time. The service was also good.

This place has delicious sushi!!! It is definitely on the pricey side, but the fish is fresh and super yummy. They have some unique rolls and great cocktails. If you’re looking for a great sushi place in the Evanston area, this is the place to go.

There seem to be a lot of Coast haters out there, which I kinda understand because I used to be on the fence myself. Yes, it is expensive, but having been many times, I think it’s damn good sushi, and food in general. Great fish, and rolls are not overpowered by mayo and whatnot, which is nice. Yes, there is some mayo on spicy, etc., rolls, but it’s balanced. Ambiance is solid. I’m tempted to deduct a star for their insultingly small portion of seaweed salad — it’s a dollop — but I’m leaving it at 5 because Coast is not a 3.5 star joint.

I have heard good things about Coast Sushi, so I visited there recently. Compared to what I have expected, it wasn’t totally as «amazing» and«great». I went there on the weekends. The food came out late. However, the service was good. Our server was attentive and friendly. Most importantly, compared to other sushi places that I went, it wasn’t the best.

We have been coming here for years now. The sushi is consistently very good. Drinks are strong and tasty. Appetizers and deserts are unique and delicious. The service is accommodating and efficient. We will keep coming back!

I’ve gotten better from Kansaku. I ordered the crunchy spicy tuna roll and it was the furthest thing from spicy, it was actually a little sweet. The staff was kind and our waitress was very professional. Another bummer was the menus, they are paper and were covered in splotches of different colored sauces, not appetizing. If you’re skimping on nice menus then at least make sure the paper ones are clean. I asked the waitress for a clean menu and she didn’t even flinch or apologize, it was like she was used to being asked that.

I’m appending/updating my first review, which I’m leaving below the ***. However, they deserve more than 3 stars, so I’m editing. First of all, Coast now employs Jane, a 5⁄5 server — kind, charming, articulate, knowledgeable. I recommend asking for her if you go in. She stands out. Second, the food & drinks, which I always consider most important. Perhaps it would help if I gave a detailed report out on my dinner this past Saturday Ginger, Pear Blushing Geisha and Cucumber martinis — they do make lovely, crisp, tasty martinis. Ginger and pear were the best — least sweet and most clean flavors. Blushing Geisha and the Cucumber were on the sweet side for me, wouldn’t order again, but if you like strawberry, try the geisha. Wasabi Shumai — fine(3.5÷5), but could use a bit more seasoning, and there was no wasabi taste. Sauce was good, and I enjoyed them served on the cucumber slice. Wish the pork were more finely ground. Salmon Spring Roll(3⁄5) Wouldn’t order again. It was just a piece of salmon(a good one though) fried in a thin spring roll wrapper. The sauce was sweet, a decent compliment. Not bad, but not a stand out Rock Shrimp Salad(5⁄5) — excellent. Hot & cold, crunchy and creamy. Yum — order this! Wasabi Maki —(4.5÷5) they do a lovely job on the asparagus, which adds a nuttiness and a crunch. Note it’s not hot at all, so the name is deceiving. Hamachi can be one of the more fishy fish, but it wasn’t. Salmon Cucumber Maki —(4⁄5) like the asparagus in the wasabi roll, they do a great job with the cucumber in this one. Salmon had a nice texture, no complaints on quality Spicy Creamy —(2⁄5) very bland, somehow. Tuna was not in pieces, but chopped which did not lend to a firm texture. I didn’t try anyone else’s entrees, so can’t comment on theirs — the Uni looked fresh, however, sometimes it’s squishy. As always with all the food, lovely presentation Finally, I maintain it’s too expensive. I almost always spend about 150 for 2 for 2 drinks each, 1 – 2 appetizers and dinner. No dessert. I’d be much more inclined to frequent the establishment if the prices were lower, although I suspect that it’s due to the high rent/taxes in Evanston, which is a shame. I guess you can’t blame them, but it does keep me away. *** To be clear, I would would absolutely eat here again, and the quality of the fish is not in question. However, a restaurant has to do at least something special to get 4 stars, and has to knock me out of the park for 5. Here, the food was very expensive — we wound up spending 120 for 2… that’s a lot of money considering I can do the same at another sushi restaurant for 80. We were dining in a group of 9 and we split the bill. We did accommodate one couple of the 9 who didn’t drink nor eat any of the 4 apps we ordered and I think they only spent about 40 total. The server was a young woman who clearly didn’t know what she was doing; we asked her specific questions about preparations and alcohols, and she really just didn’t know. I actually felt kind of bad for her — she should be better trained to understand what goes into sushi and the specials. Our dining companions all enjoyed their food, and again, I’m not really complaining, I’m just saying it’s not a stand out.

Great Sashimi but not many roll options. Everything we’ve had from Coast has been delicious, but you kind of have to know your sushi to pick a good roll. Size and quantity of the rolls have been pretty reasonable, some places give you less. It is on the pricer side of some sushi restaurants but the fish does taste fresh.

I ordered for to-go late in the night, close to their closing. The reception is polite and helpful; the order is prepared promptly and timely. The flavor is average(i only ordered sushi so I don’t know about other dishes), not particular, but as you could expect from all moderate cost sushi place. I will give three stars. Since it’s the few restaurants still open till 11 on central st, and the service is polite, I will add one more star to the rating.

Heard good things about this restaurant so we thought we would give it a try. Unfortunately there are a lot of sushi restaurants nowadays so I’m sure competition is tough. The décor of the restaurant is nice and service was pretty good. However, this restaurant is slightly more on the pricey side as sushi restaurants in the suburbs go and I really didn’t think the quality of the sushi justified the price. We got the Coast Sushi Special roll which was just not very exciting and was $ 13 for the roll. The spider crab roll was the best we had and it was $ 9 for four pieces I believe. All in all for two people with an appetizer, 4 rolls, and one drink, the total bill came to around $ 60. To me, there are better quality sushi places at better price points in the area.

Coast is a welcome addition to Central Street! We had a party of 5 for dinner on a rainy Saturday evening, no reservations, but we were seated right away since we arrived so early. We had multiple rolls, nigiri, edamame, and chicken teriyaki(for the 4 year old), and everything was wonderful. We especially liked the wasabi roll. The décor is very hip, the service is attentive, the employees are friendly, and we will certainly be back. If not to done in, for carry-out.
