No stars! This place is as bad as it gets. Like others have said they are a scam and lie and are just ride alcoholics. Sitting on the porch doing Jack shit. While some homeless lady worked just to take a shower. They actually asked me when I was leaving? I’m a paying customer and they were still jerks. Sleep by the river and just take a shower there. And go to town to do laundry. It’s only two bucks

My wife and I spent one night here in a rented room, and immediately were sorry that we didn’t stay elsewhere. The room was FILTHY and smelled bad, like a big wet dog. There were long black hairs on the sheets of the sunken, broken double bed. Even by camping standards this place is really bad. We would rather sleep in a tent in the pouring rain, than ever stay at Uncle Johnny’s Lodge again. Did I say that the place SMELLEDBAD and was ABSOLUTELYFILTHY, all the while, the good old boys sit on the porch surfing the web rather than fixing this wreck of a place up enough for backpackers not to be disgusted. Yuck. YUCK. This is a backpacker speaking… not a respectable tourist.

If you’re stopping here for 10 minutes, this place is awesome. However, the more time I’ve spent here the more I’ve realized how crooked Uncle Johnny and his crony Sarge are. On multiple occasions they’ve quoted my party a certain price for lodging and shuttle then when it was time to pay, they charged us double. I can understand this happening once but three times is outrageous. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me thrice, I should’ve learned my lesson the first time. — I believe that’s how that saying goes. Overall his facilities are nice if you’ve been on the trail for an extended period of time and need a break from the woods. Uncle Johnny’s newly designed general store is also a bust. I was told by Sarge that they will beat any REI pricing by 10% but that was also a lie. Sarge tried charging me $ 34.95 for a backpack cover that was less than $ 20 at REI. Apparently I’m at fault for knowing how much things cost. Also $ 2 for a Cliffbar is robbery. On the plus side you can buy a Snickers bar for $ 0.40. That’s cool I guess. If you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail Uncle Johnny’s is almost unavoidable but please use caution when entering this place. That place is not what it seems. You’ve been warned.

Super awesome place. You can bring a tent and camp, stay in their«hostel» or rent a cabin. Because traveling with an older folk, we opted for the cabin. It was what I’d expect but better. It had 2 bunks, so four beds, a microwave, small fridge, tv, VHS player, VHS movies, lamps, and even a cute front porch with benches. The location is great, right across from the Nolichucky, and about 2 miles from Downtown Erwin. The guys that we met that work here were sper nice and friendly. We all look forward to our trip back n June!

I didn’t stay here, but my hiking partner contacted Uncle Johnny’s for shuttling service two mornings. Grimm was friendly, informative, and humorous. The place also sells some supplies(gators, gloves, etc) if you forget something. I’m told that besides the hostel, there is one cabin with a private bath. Had I known that I would’ve stayed here instead of at the local Super 8. Next time!

This area was so beautiful; the Appalachian Trail, the Nolichucky River, mountains. The cabins were cute and provided everything a camper or traveler would need. Bunk beds, blankets, pillows, towels, mini fridge, TV, VCR with a ton of tapes in each cabin. The owner informed us that the reason he hasn’t switched over to DVDs is b/c no one will steal VHS. Makes sense to me. The hostel was a little less than nice, but I suppose if you were on a budget and had a sleeping bag it would work. There are bikes to use and a shuttle that will take you into town. Further up river is a beach for swimming and kayak and tube rentals. Had a great time around the campfire taking in all the stars. I would love to come back here for a low key, off the grid vakay.
