Dark roast baby! I love the way she does her roasts and I love that there is no light roast here either. The coffee is smooth as all hell and also has no acidity. This is my favorite coffee place in the Emeryville/​north Oakland area so far. Fantastic job, Scarlet City :)

When they say Espresso Bar, they really mean a Fun Bar! I stopped into Scarlet City as I was passing through Emeryville and was delighted to see how much personality the entire place had! The arcade machines, the pickles that are available for sale, and of course, the beans were all such a fun surprise! No pourover options or drip coffee here, espresso’s the name of the game. If you’re not an espresso drink fan, Scarlet City’s iced Americano is definitely tasty and will definitely give you a nice jolt. A fantastic little spot tucked away off a busy intersection, and also a great space to hang out, play some pinball, or bask in a sunbeam!

Scarlet City Coffee has been my favorite coffee for years so when they opened their espresso bar I was ecstatic! Unlike the other local hipster coffees such as Bicycle Coffee, Blue Bottle, etc.(sour sour sour!), Scarlet City actually tastes delicious and they know how to properly roast beans! I love that they don’t have wifi and am surprised at the other reviewers who are so desperately in need of being attached to their computers at all times. lol. Have a conversation people! You might enjoy yourself! I love the music, awesome service, décor and of course the pinball machines! Also, I’ve had to switch to decaf and they make the BEST decaf. I take mine in latte form.

I visited the café on a weekday during the early afternoon. I was lucky to find parking on the corner. There was no wait when I came and I ordered right away.
I had a dirty chai and it was delicious! Their prices are decent, the ambience of the café is awesome, and they have beer/​a pinball machine!
The only down side I would have to say was there’s no wifi?! :(

The espresso here is super yummy, the empanadas and pastries are good, and the service is friendly and fast. The people behind the counter are always really nice.
I’ve come here to read on my own, and with a group to play a board game at the big table. I miss the Doctor Who pinball machine, but I love all the other sci fi décor. Sometimes the music is a bit too loud, but to be fair I’m also a wuss about asking to have it lowered. I also wish they had one really hearty food dish — like a big sandwich — only because coffee makes me jittery without a full meal and I want to stay longer. Typically I leave when I have to go home and eat a sandwich.
They also have events I want to check out and I haven’t tried going for beer yet either, and I expect I will do both soon because I like the atmosphere and people so much.

Took forever to get two coffee drinks.
No brown sugar, no cinnamon, no drip coffee.
Cappuccino was COLD, not even warm. COLD.
Music was way too loud.
No wi-​fi.

Scarlet City is our go-​to espresso café! The owners are friendly and often around, and there are community events in the evenings and on weekends. Scarlet City already feels like a hub.
Would love to see vegan-​friendly food options, but they do have oat milk ($ 1 extra).
And the pinball machines are a great touch! They have classics from my childhood, like Terminator 2 and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Even if this place weren’t awesomely sci fi themed, it would be cool. It’s airy and pleasant with plenty of room. The coffee is amazing (we exclusively brew their Gorram Shiny Blend at home) and so, my kids say, are the cocoas.
Then there’s the pinball, which pairs with coffee like a dream come true. I really hope to spend more time here soon.

One of my favorite places I’ve tried in the east bay. It’s kinda tucked away in this corner, I actually drove right past it and didn’t even see it at first.
I typically get almond milk in my espresso drinks, but they only serve oat milk here. Which is also very good in my opinion. Great espresso drinks. Staff is always really friendly, I can always appreciate great service.
Atmosphere was really interesting, I think its something different. I like it, it’s very eclectic. Half the café was an arcade with a sci-​fi-​esque feel to it.

Went back a few weekends ago. This coffee is sooooo delicious and the service is always so prompt. This is THE ONLY place where I feel it’s not a supreme downgrade to get decaf — it’s just as delicious as the regular coffee. Also oatmeal milk latte is to die for.
I hope they decide to extend their night time hours since they have beers… mmmm I hope they can work with brewers in the area and get a delicious coffee stout. I’m rooting for ya Scarlet City!

A happy discovery by a friend long since moved out of the area. The visit to Scarlet City was a definite highlight to the day.
We ordered veggie quiches and a custom drink called ‘Xanadu’. The barista/​owner was super friendly and funny as she made our drinks with the sort of casual air that only a true, personal aficionado of all things Bean can be. She clearly was a favorite of a few other patrons that drifted in and out of the shop as my companion and I munched and sipped.
The décor is a little quirky, but nicely laid out, and the Sci-​Fi theme was not so overwhelming that I felt like a tourist in my own town. The quiche, despite an appalling lack of meat, was highly delicious. The drink was like being kicked in the mouth by a chocolate mule (but not SWEET, thank god). It was the best bumrush/​line-​backer tackle of flavor my tastebuds have experienced in quite some time.
TRY THE XANADU.
Trust me.

Scarlet City Expresso is in a light industrial area. not many offices nearby. looks like a pub will open within a few blocks of here soon. décor/​ambience is modern aluminum not warehouse nor driftwood.

Awesome coffee shop opened close to me so that is a plus. When you walk-​in, you are transported to some cool vibe lofty space. They got pinball machines with places to sit and relax. They don’t serve coffee, coffee, but espresso drinks. The closest thing to a coffee the bartista said was an Americano so I went with that. They also have macchiato, mochas and lattes. The Americano was very good and smooth.
This may be my regular go to coffee shop. Friendly staff. Can’t wait to try their other drinks and some delicious pastries they have display.
