On our way home from camp with the girls and I decided to stop for some food. First off, this place is pretty cheap. Nothing fancy just a small town place that serves good food at a fair price. They have a lot of different side dishes and I love when places do that. i had the burger and it was good. I also had the jalapeño cheese sticks and would certainly order those again. Whenever I am in Elwood, I am making a swing by Mr. happy Burger.

At least hot dogs aren’t their main stock in trade. I mean, seriously? Mr. Happy? …but anyway, though it’s kind of a dingy, ageing little building with an odd drive-through setup and poor traffic flow from the kitchen to the outside, the burgers were pretty darn good. I got the fish sandwich and was a little disappointed at first blush – rather than a large piece of intact fish, it was a neat little square of somewhat-processed fish that looked a whole lot like what I could get at McDonald’s down the street. The vegetables on top were fresher, though, and it wasn’t bad. The French fries were regular crinkle-cut frozen fries that you can make at home. It’s kind of a ways to go for us for a burger, and I wouldn’t go out of my way for it(the Lemon Drop and Hamburger High are much closer) but it was better than I expected.

I swear these burgers have magic healing powers. When I was younger, I was really sick for over a week, and one day my dad brought home a sack of Mr Happy Burger burgers for dinner and I ate a few of them and the next day I wasn’t sick anymore. From that instance, our family considered their burgers to be special. The restaurant has a very old-timey feel to it. It’s family owned. What’s strange is that the employees get paid below minimum wage because they are expected to get tips because it is supposed to have a diner-like feel and presentation. The fried mushrooms, french fries, burgers, and hotdogs are all amazing. Everything that I’ve ever eaten from here has been delicious. If you want to eat somewhere original that can be found nowhere else, Mr Happy Burger is a place that should not be ignored.

Man, I genuinely can’t believe there isn’t a Unilocal review for this place yet. As with other Elwood natives, I grew up dining at Mr. Happy Burger as a fun treat, and didn’t realize how truly unique, charming and fun this restaurant was until I had been gone for a few years. It’s a throwback to an era of fast food where each town had it’s own unique flavors, a living fossil of fast food restaurants. The place is legit retro – top to bottom and all throughout – with all original icons from before the days when every rest stop of every highway exit has the same 5 fast food places. Driving by you’d almost assume the place was closed years ago because everything about it is frozen in time – somewhere in the better days of the town it sits in. Don’t be fooled though, this place is a treasure, a true treasure. Locals who have been visiting the restaurant for decades are its regulars. Mr. Happy Burger serves up a surprisingly fun array deliciousness, including fries, mushrooms, chicken strips and nuggets, cheese cubes, etc. to accompany their locally famous Mr. Happy burgers, hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, corn dogs, fish sandwiches and tenderloins. You almost can’t go wrong with whatever you order there. Dine in and enjoy the small town feel or take it to go(but don’t be surprised if you think about U-turning for seconds).
