We had not been to the Flying Fish since it was sold. It was always one of our favorite places. The ambience is not good — bright lights & noisy. Our waiter was nice & checked with us often but we had to ask for knives(got one). We asked for more water & he brought one(didn’t refill — a new glass) he never cleared our miso soup bowls either. The food was fair at best. We had teriyaki chicken. It was very dry with no teriyaki flavor. The best part of the meal was the edamame. The funny think was no chopsticks — probably because the chicken & cucumber salad pieces were too large to use chopsticks. Sadly we won’t be back.

I just had the most comfortable meal in a while. The lounge elegant lounge seating in the bar made it feel like a posh restaurant but the friendly staff made it feel like home. The sushi dinner for two is a great deal and plenty of food, the beer selection wasn’t large but they had dogfish head on tap so i was happy. The hamachi roll we had was great and they had no problem substituting yellowtail for us. Their take on the vegas roll was not very good, no texture. All in all this place is a treat.

For my 600th review I wanted it to be a little more special. So I went with the Flying Fish… When I went in, I had no intention of eating that night. I left my wallet in the truck and I just wanted to see the menu. But then the hostess was just so persistent. Pleasantly persistent and convincingly convicted that I would enjoy my meal here. So I had to, even though I knew that the meal was going to be pricey. Her friendliness was spot on and caused me to move my truck to a better parking spot, get my wallet and go in for one of the most expensive meals I may have ever had by myself. $ 50 gets you the dinner for two. But since I am used to AYCE this is just dinner for one. 3 rolls and two apps. The rolls were excellent. The selection is limited on the $ 50 for two special. But there was enough there to get me near what I wanted. Usually I like a tightly rolled small roll, but usually I am on an AYCE menu. Here I needed to be satiated with what I had in front of me. The rolls were bigger, but they weren’t over loaded with rice and lacking in flavor either. I loved the mussels and the soy beans that I got as the apps. My rolls were very fresh and tasty. I wish I could have justified spending more, because I did want some nigiri… but the prices were just not reasonable for two pieces of fish. My guess is that there is a bunch of gold money in this town if they are charging $ 10 for a two piece order of quail egg on tobiko. I enjoyed sitting at the bar, talking to the chefs gave me a little more insight on the history of the restaurant. From what I gather the had a chef that had brought some great professionalism to the joint and had a big hand in making it what it is today. She just recently left… but they have some great chefs who seem willing to step up and take over where she left off. Inside it seems a little disjointed when you first walk in. A little bit of this and a little bit of that. But it also is nicely done and not just a bunch of glue glitter and paint to make the place«seem» nice when really it’s worn out underneath the cheap glitz. I went back in to check out what they offered on the lunch menu… they don’t have a lunch menu. So all of the expensive stuff on the dinner menu is the lunch menu too. How do people spend $ 30 for a lunch? Admittedly I probably wont be back to the flying fish… unless they have some changes in pricing concept. Yes, the sushi seemed really fresh and high end stuff… but high end places where I spend $ 70-$ 100 a person only get’s my business once every few years at the most. And for my excellent sushi Chef… May the Force be with You.

We have always experienced difficulty finding a good restaurant when travelling past Elko. A friend recommended the Fling Fish and I thank him for that. We are not usually fans of restaurants with multiple food categories. Thus place delovered. We had lunch, great mushroom panini, curry bowl and crab avocado app. Excellent. You will be pleased you stopped. This is the new location.

Don’t eat at the Flying Fish unless you’ve got time to burn. If you want to talk to your date you’ll have plenty of time without any waiters bugging you. Then again you won’t have any drinks or food because they will let you sit there for quite a while before asking you if you’ve been waited on. This is not the first time I’ve had horrible service from the Flying Fish.

Took a gamble on looks since this location had zero reviews. The place was just opening for lunch and we were the first to arrive. Atmosphere was nice, comfortable, and a little trendy for the rustic look of Elko. We has sushi and fish tacos. The rolls were well prepared, tasty, and average in size, which I personally like. I hate restaurants that plate too much food. The special roll, The Perfect Storm, had just the right amount of spices to make it flavorful without burning the mouth for hours. Thumbs up. The salsa with the fish tacos was so tasty my wife had to ask for more, which she rarely does. This is not a cheap place to eat, but as far a food, service staff, and comfort level I give it four stars. Next time through Elko I might just drop by for dinner.
