I am an ice cream fanatic. I love good, rich, creamy ice cream and could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And then get more for a midnight snack. All in all, I wasn’t super impressed by the quality of Leatherby’s ice cream. I ordered a junior dish of cookies ‘n’ cream, which was around $ 5. Instead of being a single scoop(I was picturing measly Baskin Robbins scoop-size), it was more like two scoops. I appreciate a place that’s generous with their scoops! It came in a pretty glass cup with two mini crunchy cookies on the side– kind of like Famous Amos knock-offs, as they were a little too dry and stale. While the ice cream was creamy, sweet, and had a few chunks of chocolate cookie in it, it had a little too much airiness, giving some bites the consistency of mousse or whipped cream. I’d come again to try something else, as maybe the ice cream gets along better with toppings and sauces! I really enjoyed my BLAT(bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato) sandwich though! It was around $ 10. By the time our food came out(and it took awhile because there was a large party seated next to us), I was so ready to eat. The bread was grilled to perfection, slightly crunchy and yet with the softness you appreciate, so that it doesn’t feel like you’re biting into a cracker. There wasn’t enough avocado — but seriously, who can ever get enough avocado, am I right? They were quite generous with the thin, crispy bacon! The only tough part was that the lettuce was shredded and kept falling out of the sandwich. Overall, there was a cute ice cream parlor feel to the place with loads of ice cream options served in gigantic quantities, but I wish they had healthier options for entrees. There’s nothing like fried food and then ice cream. «Mm mmm mmm!» said no one’s heart ever.

First time customer here. I usually went to a burger place next to Macy’s downtown with my granddaughter for a brownie sundae. Since they closed I decided to try this eatery. I was pleasantly suprised with the great service. They were very attentive and we were served promptly. I will definitely be returning.

Longtime customer of the original location(Arden) of one of Sactown’s well-known family sit-down ice cream parlors. I enjoy the homemade ice cream, sauces, and whipped cream. Service is really cheerful, ice cream high quality and tasty, portions generous, prices reasonable. Although they do serve sandwiches, soups, shakes and such, I usually come just for the ice cream. There are so many different flavor combos and sundae creations, one of my favorite seasonal flavor is spumoni. Regular flavors I enjoy are the Chocolate Mint or Cookies ‘n Mint, Strawberry Cheesecake, Mocha Royale, and Toasted Almond. After that last spoonful, you’re always going to want to come back. Had a discount coupon for Leatherby’s Family Creamery included in my 2015 registration for Running of the Elk which I totally forgot about until now. Note to self: find that card! The Universe must really be trying to get me to go there: as a side-effect of my radio-calling contest winning streak of 2014, I had signed up for many radio station newsletters/e-clubs to try to win prizes, not thinking I’d also get birthday freebies from them too! Zero loyalty to particular stations, as long as they’re in Sacramento though — this year K-Hits 101.5FM sent me an e-mail with a birthday treat to Opa! Opa! complimentary lunch and a sweet treat too. Um, yes please, thank you! «Celebrate your birthday with one of your favorite sundae creations at Leatherby’s. Print this email and bring it with you to Leatherby’s within 7 days of your birthday to choose any sundae up to $ 8.49 in value. Dine-in only, no cash value.» Promptly after going to Nothing Bundt Cakes a few doors down for my free birthday bundtlet, I came in to this Elk Grove Leatherby’s for the first time(every previous attempt to come in it was ridiculously packed and not worth the wait). A little bit of a wait this time(servers were busy with a couple of birthday songs in a row) but they quickly cleaned off a small booth for me. Water also given right away, and the server kindly checked with the manager if they would honor the e-mail treat(YESTHEYDID). I was a little sad that the $ 8.49 it was worth did go as far as I originally thought. Most of my favorite sundaes(Rachel’s, cost a little more than that, but then again I usually share those. This time I was on my own, so rather than get a small sundae, I went with the Jennifer’s Brownie Delight for exactly $ 8.49. Brownies with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, toasted almonds, whipped cream and a cherry. I did end up paying tax and tip, but still a great deal! Did not disappoint, convenient considering I was on a birthday freebie run anyway. Still a fan of the Arden creamery though.

I had a banana split and it was good. The staff was friendly and they have a pretty large selection to choose from.

Second time going to Leatherby’s, but first time going to the Elk Grove location and the environment definitely feels much better and more welcoming! As a group of three, we attempted to finish the Daddy Dave’s Banana Split with strawberry, caramel praline, and coffee ice cream. I was extremely surprised by how delicious each flavor was! They weren’t mediocre but definitely some of the best ice cream I have had in awhile or maybe ever! I liked that we were able to pick which toppings to add on and customize it however we chose. The waiter was also very pleasant and patient when taking our order. I would definitely come back to this location again to try other flavors! It was also really nice and fun seeing other families and parties trying to devour huge sundaes!

I’ve been here a bunch of times and I’ve never had a bad experience. We decided to have our daughter’s birthday party here and it was a GREAT decision! I was awful and estimated that we would have 40 people, I had to call back twice and increase the amount of people and they were extremely kind and accommodating every time I called. They had our tables all set up before we arrived. They didn’t complain when people decided to use other tables that we hadn’t reserved. Our waitress Alli and our waiter Tim were AMAZING. They were sweet, calm, patient with our party of 50+ people that included 23 kids and 6 babies. They got all our food out hot. They were attentive and got everyone single person the food/drink/ice cream they ordered in a timely fashion. They went above and beyond, providing plates and forks for the cake we brought in. The manager Jojo was awesome, checking in on us several times. This is the BEST party experience I’ve ever had. There were SO many people in our party and it ran smoothly. Thank you so much for the awesome service! You guys were the BEST and I could not recommend booking a party here anymore.

— Review based on dessert only — Cheap prices for the amount of ice cream you get. We ordered the Daddy Dave’s Banana Special which was enough to feed 7 people. The thing that stood out most for me — besides how massive it was — was the hot fudge. It was extremely thick and creamy. I wish I had ordered more on the side. The service was very fast. There were about 3 people checking in on our table every few minutes and they were all friendly and enthusiastic about their jobs.

Big fan of the Black & Tan and the crab sandwich(although pricey). I can never finish an ice cream by myself so it’s nice to share with someone else. Sometimes we just come here for the ice cream but eating a full meal isn’t bad either. They’re most well known for their ice cream though. It can get extremely busy with teenagers and families but that’s to be expected. You can also order your ice cream to go but the presentation won’t be as nice and it won’t be as appetizing. Great service, excellent for children and families. People come here a lot for birthdays I guess because every time I come here they sing Happy Birthday at least 3 times. It’s pretty loud but nothing to complain about. Their servers are so sweet! There is one server here who does magic tricks!!! I was so impressed! One magic trick required me to do some math and since I’m stupid I messed his trick up and it didn’t work but he was still extremely nice and entertaining. Apparently he does it mostly for children. But for 24-year-olds too! Haven’t seen him since that night but a family friendly restaurant with tasty ice cream and magic tricks? I’m all about it.

If you get their specials, you definitely will need some buddies to share it with. Their portions are huge and is full of sugar. Get ready for that sugar rush to come into your body! A big fan of their whipped cream! oh so good!

Very much your cute, traditional American ice cream shop. I haven’t tried any of the actual food that they serve here, so I can not speak for that, but as far as the actual ice cream goes, I’m pretty satisfied. The toasted almond flavor is delicious! We got the large to go tub to bring home. However, of the several flavors I tried, this was probably the only one I liked. The pistachio nut and banana nut I would definitely pass on. If I’m in the mood for some ice cream, Leatherby’s will do in a fix, but there are better options(read: Gunther’s) that I’d rather go for if given the choice.

More like 3.5 stars I was craving ice cream the other night, and Leatherby’s was the only place open late, other than supermarkets. This Elk Grove location is their newest location. I’ve only been here once before and that was about two years ago. Keep in mind that this place emphasizes ice cream, not food; therefore, I would honestly rank their food lower than diner food. Their sundaes are what people come for. The ice cream is good and will satisfy anyone’s craving. I do prefer Gunthers, however. Our waitress was nice and attentive, yet an employee who was wearing a red shirt, whom I’m assuming is a supervisor or assistant manager, was monotone. It’s sad that a server knew more about customer service than her superior. Overall this place is definitely worth a stop.

Growing up, I always dreamed of having an ice cream parlor close by. Having Leatherby’s down the street is my dream come true! The décor and ambiance of this shop is what you would expect an ice cream parlor to be. It is always busy with families and kids enjoying their frozen treats. I’m sure years from now, when the children are grown, they will have memories of when their parents used to take them to Leatherby’s. It is nostalgia inducing! The menu is fairly simple. The old fashioned favorites like sundaes, parfaits, banana splits, malts, milkshakes and floats are available along with sandwiches, burgers, salads and hotdogs. They even have liverwurst sandwiches, which always remind me of my mom. The service is efficient, even during busy times. They have to work fast because eager tummies can’t wait and ice cream doesn’t sit well for too long. Kudos for their extra measures with peanut allergies. My sister informed our waitress that my niece was allergic to peanuts. The waitress told us that they have a special procedure for preparing ice cream for people who are allergic. They use a fresh batch of ice cream and new, clean equipment. I thought that was great since my niece is highly allergic and has ended up in the emergency room for accidentally eating it before.

I remember my mom would take me to the Freeport location after receiving straight A’s on my report cards. I would indulge in their root beer float since I loved both root beer and vanilla ice cream. With the Elk Grove location being the next closest to my parent’s home, I would make any excuse I can to go to Leatherby’s to relive my childhood. Unfortunately, I moved on from root beer floats to their Black and White Sundaes. Nevertheless, it was still a trip down memory lane. If my mind was the movie Inside Out, Leatherby’s would forever be one of those memory globes /world’s in my consciousness. PS: Rocky Road rocks along with chocolate mint.

Omg! First time here and let me tell you!!! The ice cream was amazingly good! The place is nice and big! They serve food there, like fries and burgers also. Took the kids here after dinner elsewhere. They ordered from the kids menu and the ice cream was far more than what they imagine! They eyes lit up when they’re fudge banana splits came! The place is pretty darn pricey for some ice cream! However you do receive mucho grande ice cream! Great experience, we laughed at who would finish first and finish all the ice cream before they stomach explodes

I used to come to the Leatherby’s in Arden before this one opened. I used to LOVE coming here. Their ice cream and food were just so tasty! However, after trying Gunter’s and Vic’s, Leatherby’s cannot amount to them. After dinner, we decided to go here instead of getting a pazookie from BJ’s. Maybe we should have just gotten the pazookie. Compared to Vic’s and Gunther’s their selection of ice cream is very minimal. It only has the basics-chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cookies n cream, etc. I had the Junior Dish with cookie dough and my bf got a small cookies n cream milkshake. The presentation is still really nice. I love their glasses! However, I’m not impressed with their ice cream anymore. My junior dish came in a small cup with a side of two small cookies. Unfortunately, the ice cream tasted very watered down. It wasn’t creamy, it wasn’t thick, it was just melted ice cream. The cookies tasted kinda stale too. Overall, not impressed by their ice cream anymore. The way they do their milkshakes is weird to me. I’m not sure if they did it on accident or that’s how they really do their milkshakes. They put the whipped cream at the bottom of the shake. Kinda threw the both of us off. I didn’t like that. Again, the shake was also very melted and watered down. Even though we didn’t truly enjoy our experience here, the staff was SUPERB! No matter how busy the place got, they were super friendly and still attentive to their customers. I enjoy coming to a restaurant with smiling faces welcoming you. 5 stars for their customer service, but 2 stars for their ice cream. The bf and I both thought of Leatherby’s as a middle school/high school hangout or a family affair. For the older crowd, maybe try elsewhere.

Do you remember the day the McFlurry Came out at Mcdonald’s? It was a large cup full of ice cream! They would put a scoop of toppings in the cup and go over to the mixer and mix it up, Then they would add another scoop of topping and go and mix that up! In the beginning you would consistently get a high quality Mcflurry. Then They stopped using the mixer to mix it. and would do it by hand. Then they would stop mixing it all together and you’d just get a dump of toppings in a cup. Now i don’t even eat Mcflurry’s anymore, cause i’m always disappointed. Leatherby’s is exactly NOT like that! Everytime I come here i get a consistently high quality ice cream experience! Their treats are all hand crafted to perfection! The customer service is always on point! My son loves this place! I’m dairy free, so I stick to the hamburger and Fries, which are also so delicious! So if you want a high quality dessert experience you know where to come!

Wonderful place for family and friends!!! Also it’s great for bday parties or even graduation parties! Huge space and friendly service! You can get it to go or dine in! They have a variety of ice cream flavors, sundaes, milk shakes, Malts, and banana spits! They also have burgers, sandwiches, and fries! Perfect for sweet and salty lovers! I got a strawberry and vanilla shake! Delicious and great portion! My cousins got a fudge brownie delight! Huge portion with vanilla ice cream and a fresh brownie! My lady got a single scoop of chocolate ice cream with fudge, and a cherry!!! We lastly ordered a basket of fries! Great to share! Fun place to come and they close at midnight on the weekends!!!

Goodness knows what kind of crazy flavors my friend Jenn got. Her ice cream looks like someone used a highlighter to color her flavors. It’s that bright. Brighter than her cheap shades. It’s all about the ice cream and not about the food here. It’s the food that brings this place down to 3 stars since they can’t do a burger justice. I’m only asking that the burger be better than McDonald’s. Which in this case with the sad lettuce and overcooked burger was an epic fail. The sundaes are the saving grace here, and if we could all live off of ice cream and no food, I’m sure everyone would be giving this place 4 and 5 stars. But we don’t live in a world of ice cream, do we? But we should.

Leatherby’s is a hometown fav and must-do(eat) when in Sacramento! I grew up frequenting the Arden location, but there are now 3 restaurants in Sacramento: Arden, Citrus Heights and Elk Grove. I have fond memories of birthdays, cotillion meals & sports dinners at Leatherby’s. I don’t know one person who does not like this place. Their ice cream sundaes are insanely huge, messy and delicious! They are meant to share, but my cousins and I usually get our own, lol. We have big kid appetities now! Their ice cream steals the show, but their lunch is also worth trying. They have soup/sandwhich /salad combos under $ 7 Monday– Thursdays which are small, but filling. I recommend their crab sandwhich which is a customer favorite.(I suggest eating something small so you can DEVOUR dessert later.) Their black & tans are amazing. I also like their peanut butter sauce since it is more a whipped consistency. Their staff is always busy, but always smiling which I like. Parking at this location is weird since all the spots at the front are 30 minutes, so park to the rear and save yourself circling. The best part is that their ice cream is homemade and the restaurant is family-owned!

Leatherby’s is always awesome! Service is always excellent! Servers are attentive, friendly, and charismatic. Great place for friends, families, and large groups. The ice cream is always creamy an delicious. My favorite ice cream dish is the Royal Raspberry, classic vanilla ice cream on top of chocolate sponge cake, topped with raspberry(as pictured!). Oh my gooooodness, I’m drooling as I write this review. My other recommendation is the banana split. Their WHIPPEDCREAM is to die for! They make their own whipped cream so it has a heavy texture to it with just the right amount of sweetness. They also have an actual food menu so when we feel extra hungry, we would eat dinner here and finish off with our favorite ice cream dishes. Keep an eye out for Groupons they offer, which are great deals!
