What a great addition to the neighborhood. Thank you Katy for bringing your community approach and finding great teachers. Miriam rocks a moderate class on Tues and Thursdays. Lauren does a lovely flow and challenges you at the same time. The schedule is great for almost any time of the day so that you can make a class fit into your schedule. And it’s a pleasure to sip tea. I hope you will try it out soon. They offer great reasonable pricing.

I’m new to yoga. I started at Square One(literally and figuratively) with the intention to learn and to set aside my lingering«athlete ego.» I took Ashley’s 6:30am class, and I left feeling humbled, centered, and«in my body.» I found her teaching style – direct, friendly, a little wry – to be just right. And the space is great; it’s a clean, simple studio with big windows that give onto the hills. They have plenty of props(blocks, blankets, straps) and cubbies for your stuff. I’ve been to a half a dozen classes now, and each new teacher has been inclusive and intuitive in her own way. I hope to see you there.

I am always a little nervous about trying a new yoga studio, but when Square One Yoga opened up their El Cerrito studio just a short walk from my house I knew I had to check it out and their 30 day new student special was too good to pass up. The studio is located on the second floor of a building, so from the street it is impossible to guess how lovely the studio will be. But once you find your way up the stairs you’ll find a bright and airy studio with big windows pretty curtained mirrors, and nice clean floors. I’ve also taken classes in a secondary space, which is less bright and airy, but still clean and pleasant. I am not an advanced yoga practitioner by any means. My heels don’t hit the floor in downward dog, I can’t chaturanga to updog, I teeter in balance poses when I can do them at all. But the teachers and other students have always put me at ease. In the last few weeks I’ve taken moderate or slow classes with five of the teachers. Each of them was so kind and welcoming. They seem to do a good job taking care of students with different abilities. Lauren has a beautiful lilting way of delivering directions that kept my mind gently focused and made a challenging class feel peaceful(Moderate Class) Katy’s gentle guidance helped me notice the sensations created by each pose and really bring attention to my breath.(Slow Class, substitute instructor) Rachel’s sequencing is so amazing! The classes I have taken with her featured fiery strength building poses followed by cooling counterposes that left me feeling awesome and really strong.(Moderate Class) Hope showed us some restorative poses that I’ve used at home, she introduced me to the magic of the lavender scented eye pillow, and she also has pretty cards she let us use during class to show if we wanted hands-on adjustments or not.(Slow Class, substitute instructor) Mary Beth helped me really focus on finding integrity in the poses and fine tuning my form. I feel like I learned a lot in her class!(Slow Class) I’m really looking forward to meeting some of the other teachers! When my 30 –Day special expires I am definitely going to buy a membership or a class pack once I can figure out what fits best into my budget. Thank you Square One!
