River House

Holy crap. At least from the first photo of a screen shot of the «chef» he wants to kill all the police., so I’ll go ahead and not find out if it’s closed or not. Sketchy

They are closed… could have been a good place. if the right people had it. now it just sits there. I would turn it into two nice apartments..

Gone several years now. Building is for sale and closed. Never ate there but heard it was good and friendly.

Food was good, the big issue was the service. My husband and I went to visit friends over Labor Day weekend. The restaurant was totally unprepared for the rush (they were one of the only restaurants open on Sunday). We sat for at least ten min to even be acknowledged by the bartender for service or greeting. Waited almost an hour for our food. Good thing we weren’t in a rush. The bartender seemed like she had no support from servers and was caring for ten tables plus the bar by herself. The bar ended up filthy with dirty glasses and dishes with no bar backs to clean and clear. Food was cooked well but it will be awhile before we go back again.

Stunning views of the Chowan River give this place lots of atmosphere. The restaurant has many older items of interest that have been used in the décor. The food is very good. The cheese grit cakes are fantastic. I was pleased that they had several offerings from Mother Earth Brewing out of Kinston, NC. I miss the cheese tomato soup that used to be offered here and the farm house cheese; maybe it will come back in the cooler months. We had a very nice waitress that gave us excellent service. l Overall, a nice night out with friends.

Wasn’t that impressed with the oysters. Smelled too fishy. Very nice atmosphere though.

Went there twice when it was Mac’s Back Door and thought food and service was excellent. It changed hands since the last time we werr to Mac’s and became the River House so my wife and I went there on Fathers Day. We were disappointed. I order a dozen raw oysters on the half shell and they were served on a tin plate. After looking at them crammed on the plate I counted them and found there were only 11 oysters so I complained. While waiting for the additional oyster I noticed there was another empty shell with only the hinge stuck to it. The waitress came back with 2 more oysters do I didn’t bother to show the empty one. Meal we ordered was OK

A thimble full of wine. No presentation — just food slopped on a plate… The food was just OK.

We did not receive an excellent welcome upon arrival. The jazz music was very loud and didn’t fit in with the casual Friday night crowd. The service could have been better. No one seemed concerned that the bar drinks were not what we ordered.
However, the food was fabulous. The scallops were cooked to perfection and perfectly seasoned. The flounder was as well. If they could get their level of service to match their food, it would be an excellent restaurant. We were happy with our ½ portions!

One of the best restaurants we’ve been to (anywhere, and we’re not from Edenton). A real treat, from the burgers, to the steaks, to the (of course) seafood.

The food was great. I was in town on business and glad I found this place. The views are stunning.

a bit late on this review, but I was recently reminded of our fabulous night at Mac’s. Our group was a bit under-​dressed during a visit to coastal Carolina and we had reservations about feeling uncomfortable in the dining area. We sent a «scout» in to Mac’s to determine if we could fit in and also ask if our attire was okay. Not only was it okay, but the entire staff made us feel right at home!
The food was fresh, the staff was wonderful, and we laughed and ate our way through two plus hours! The crowd was very friendly and everyone was having a great time while enjoying very well prepared food.
If you find yourself in the area, stop by and enjoy the hospitality and food of Mac’s. We will go out of our way to visit them again and again.
