Sax’s Steak & Pizza

This place is 5 minutes from me and when I need a quick take out meal this is my go to spot joint. Take out only… there’s no where to sit in this place.

Having driven by this small place and seeing all of the signs announcing «Best Grinder» I knew we had to try it. Finally, on an afternoon we were going to be in the neighborhood I posed it to my steak-​and-​cheese-​loving family and they were totally game.
I did my research and I knew there were only a couple of tables in the joint. I figured that if we couldn’t sit down we’d head to the bike path for a picnic. Well, when we arrived the tables were unoccupied so I was like, «Sweet!» We ordered: a steak and cheese for my sons to split, an Italian grinder for me and the hubs to split, and small orders of fries and onion rings.
While we sat at one of the small tables it became obvious that even though the table was free we couldn’t possibly sit there to eat. Several people came and went while we were waiting for our food, milling around while they themselves waited. So when our food came out we headed out to find a more comfortable place to eat. I’m not complaining, I just wanted to point out that even though there are a couple of tables inside, I’m not sure you’d want to eat at them.
No worries, we can do take out. We swung by the bike path and had a picnic. The food was as you’d expect. The boys enjoyed the steak and cheese. The Italian reminded me of the pizza joint grinders I loved as a kid. I’ve moved on since then but I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. I was impressed with the fries and rings given that we took them to go, they held up surprisingly well.
So, a fun experience but I think I’d have to live in the neighborhood to go back for takeout.

The philly cheese steaks are so good. The size is legit. Hot sauce is good.

Steak n cheese with onion rings is where it’s at. They don’t have coupons or deals, just overall low prices for everyone. A tasty EP staple.

Every time I’m in town, you can be sure I will be getting me some Sax Takeout! I currently live in Cali– …we have Subway and a few others places that it’s not even worth mentioning. I grew up on «Grinders». and used to go to Tony’s Market on Broad St. Now by no means is Sax «Tony’s» but they’re damn good.
Can’t go wrong with an Hot Italian and Steak and Cheese!

It would be a 5 IF they delivered… That is the ONLY negative… Sax is TOP NOTCH… Best Steak & Cheese around… All around good food…

Sax’s Steak & Pizza makes a very tasty Italian Grinder! However, I suggest ordering to go as there are only two small tables to dine there.

One can only wonder how a tiny little food joint with the interior the size of a restaurant bathroom can be so successful. There is only one explanation: the food is supreme. I think out of the hundreds of millions of times I have visited here, I have only ordered the same one thing off the menu: the 12inch cheeseburger. And it never disappoints. Before you lose all your credibility in me and in this review, I have a valid reason for only ordering the same thing: what I order is perfection. Why would I order anything else when my tastebuds have already entered an impeccable dreamy wonderland of sizzling delight? But in all seriousness this was without a doubt the best burger I have ever had in my life. And right in my own home town.
It took me nearly three years to finally discover Sax’s existence while living in East Providence. If it wasn’t for running by the small burger joint with my cross country team, I probably wouldn’t be writing this review today. The second we encountered the tiny burger joint, a strong aroma began to fill our nostrils. We immediately joked that we had to go back after practice to visit the small burger joint and that it was the best smell we ever experienced. Eventually, after one practice, we decided to go. It was from that point on where we all fell in love with the small burger joint. In fact, we made an announcement in our school assembly about it the next day. We refer to it as the Mecca of the food industry.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my sax steak and cheese always fresh and amazing great sized sandwiches too and the onion rings i don’t even know where to begin they are just amazing light crispy i have never had such great onion rings i could really eat them everyday. My only complaint sometimes the girl who answers the phone sometimes has an attitude problem. If you don’t like your job don’t work there because you should be happy and pleasant with all costumers even over the phone after all costumers are the reason your in business.

Great steak subs. Really good ingredients and cooked perfectly. Outstanding value, a large at Saxs is priced less than a medium at D’Angelo’s. pizza and Fries are pretty good. $ 14.99 for a 20″ inch cheese. Can’t wait to try the Angus Burgers

Absolutely amazing. Coworker and I regularly drive to EP on our lunch break from downtown providence.
They have the BEST french fries I have ever had in my entire life and their mozzarella sticks are huge and delicious. Spinach pies are equally good.
I never would have expected that tiny little place to have such awesome food. Keeping in mind that the place is tiny, I suggest taking the food to go.

I’ve only had steak and cheese grinders from Sax’s but they are so good I get the same thing every time. The onion rings are awesome too.

While their steak n cheese came out piping hot, I found it to be dry and not that exciting (I went with the mushroom, onion, and cheese one). Not rushing back to try anything else. Staff was very friendly though.

Order the steak cheese onion and mushroom. Delicious, great bread, real steak, not shaved crap.
This place is a little drive up dump, but if your craving a steak and cheese GRINDER. Try this place out.

I would love to give them 5 stars for their subs because they’re delicious. Absolutely Amazing! However, the pizza is awful. The cheese is like plastic. Tastes like leftover microwaved pizza, which is far off from their subs.
Their subs come on a warm, soft, roll and the meats are flavorful and the cuts are perfect. I come here anytime I want a good «grinder» as they call it. Very delicious, but my pizza days are reserved for a different place, which is unfortunate.

Very disappointed :(I just ordered a large Grilled chicken salad and asked that the chicken be cooked «well done» and I def got the opposite! First the salad wasn’t ready when I got there, so there is no reason why it was COLD! It also tasted as if it was old –_​– like 3 day old leftover cooked chicken! The salad also had more cucumbers and tomatoes than lettuce :(I am so not happy!

The pizza is nothing to rave about but is edible. The sandwiches are okay nothing that great either. Mozzarella sticks are pretty good and onion rings as well. Pretty solid food for a time when you just want to pig out and have a fatty meal!

I’ve driven past Sax’s a million times before and never stopped to order anything. Reading reviews on Unilocal i decided to give them a try and i ordered a Steak n’ Chz. First and most important, the quality of the steak is very good. It’s lean and delicious. The small is a more than enough for one person, even my wife and i can split a small. Get a an order of fries to go with it, they were tasty and hot. I never go to D’angelo’s anymore because it’s way too expensive. The size sandwich you get at Sax’s for $ 5 would cost me at least $ 2 more at D’angelo’s. Plus it tastes BETTER! The only negatives are that you really can’t eat in. There is 1 small table but this is primarily made for take out. Call ahead and have your Steak n’ Chz ready when you get there. I will be a regular from now on. How can you beat $ 5 for a quality sandwich? Answer: you can’t! A–
P. S. i mentioned that i tried them out because of the reviews on Unilocal and they new what Unilocal was and even had a Unilocal sticker on the outside door. I thought that was cool.

When I was a child, my father lived near Sax’s for a couple of years. I had fond memories of getting awesome steak and cheese grinders here, but I hadn’t been in 15 years or so. I recently had the opportunity to go there again, and let me tell you, it does NOT disappoint!
I would recommend any of the steak subs, but «The Works» is my favorite. A crispy toasted torpedo roll loaded with juicy steak, sauteed mushrooms and onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo, american cheese and the magic ingredient… coney island hotdog sauce!
Definitely get an order of fries with it, they are delicious as well.
The décor is fantasticly outdated. I think the only thing that has changed in the past 15 years is that it is now plastered inside and out with banners proclaiming the awards it has won from Rhode Island Monthly magazine, among others.
Definitely check it out!
