Sushi Ya takes a fairly long time, but the wait is worth it. The sushi is some of the best you will find near MSU’s campus, especially for the price. I love the MSU roll, personally. If you are wanting sushi near campus, this is the place to go. If you are willing to drive or splurge, I would recommend Maru.

I absolutely love this place! Awesome sushi. Absolutely love the miso soup and the salad is amazing. I moved back to the metro Detroit area after graduation and none of the places I have been to compare to Sushi Ya. I prefer this place over Sansu and Omi’s as well. It’s also right next to Bubble Island which is a plus.

The lunch box is delicious and a great deal! My favorite place to get sushi within walking distance to MSU’s campus

All the items on the menu are pretty good. Pretty cheap too. Also very close to campus.

The worst sushi experience I’ve had in the Lansing area. I visited Sushi Ya for lunch and started with the fried beef gyoza. Despite being fried, the gyoza was soggy and practically falling apart. Then onto the sushi — the most disappointing portion. I selected the spicy tuna, yellow tail, and shrimp tempura. Not only were the rolls objectively too large, but the rice was also hard and oddly warm which made eating the sushi near impossible. Alongside the sushi I also received standard side salad and miso soup. The salad was most likely a lettuce mix which was drenched in a questionable ginger dressing and the miso soup had microscopic tofu. More disappointment. Despite the poor quality in food, the service was very nice. If you want reliably excellent sushi, I would recommend Maru over this establishment.

Such good sushi! Me and my friends come here practically every day, my favorite is the msu roll. Servers here are on top of everything, they don’t even let your water get empty. Very convenient to my apartment and the ambiance was very nice

We had an awesome time here tonight. Matt G. was our server and he did an EXCELLENT job! He was so friendly and so helpful. We aren’t from around here so we chatted with him about a lot of different things. He gave us some names of different things to do in the area as well as places to go see. As for the sushi it was so great! So yummy. We had some really yummy rolls, soup, edamame and a salad. Very impressed and I know we will be back!

I came here while I was visiting my sister’s college. At first I was impressed by the hospitality but the food was not good at all. I do not recommend this place!

Mr. MVP works in East Lansing, so we get to have sushi take away in Kalamazoo every so often. We miss having a proper sushi place in Kalamazoo since Sushi Ya closed, so having Sushi Ya East Lansing is pretty fantastic. First I have to say, I’ve never set foot inside the place, so I have no idea what it looks like. As far as I know it is the most amazing sushi joint on Earth. Mr. MVP brings it home to me, 80 minutes away and I don’t think much about the building. The sushi itself is very predictable Sushi Ya sushi. We like it because it fits in with our FODMAP diet. The sushi makers are always willing to take off the sauces and extra toppings and they are very good about listening and getting our order right. We have never had an allergen mixed in, which is impressive. Our favorite roll has beef, carrots and lettuce — it’s the Michigan roll — no sauce or toppings. We also enjoy the avocado roll and a chicken roll with avocado. The rolls travel in the car just fine during the commute and until Sushi Ya reopens in Kalamazoo, we will keep ordering from East Lansing.

Get the avocado tempura appetizer. And the Bento boxes are extra nice! Teriyaki chicken is great. Great service!

The waitress was so helpful! I’m a picky eater(ever since I started eating a paleo diet) and can’t make sushi work for me because I don’t want to eat«this» or «that.» Luckily, the staff was friendly and helped modify a menu choice for me. Have never felt so full on sushi before!

Best place for sushi in in Michigan! Super yummy. I really enjoy the crunch roll. Would suggest it for anyone to go.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in town. It is one of the less expensive options in town and I think you get the best deal for the price. It’s casual and not as flashy or fun as Sansu or Ai Sushi but I think that the sushi being better is worth it. I absolutely love the MSU Roll and get it almost every time I go. And for dessert, they give everyone a fried banana with chocolate sauce which is surprisingly delicious.

I personally prefer Sansu, but Sushi Ya is convenient since it is located on Grand River. The waitress was kind and very helpful. I definitely gravitate towards places that have great customer service and this place proved to hold a truly welcoming atmosphere. My friend and I ordered 3 rolls, although I don’t remember what they were called? I think one was called the MSU roll? Regardless, they all were quite tasty!

My boyfriend and I refer to this as «Sushi No». A fairly mediocre sushi place with ingredients that are less than fresh. But, it’s centrally located, so unless you drive outside the MSU campus area, this is pretty much the only Japanese option.

Hands down, without a doubt, the best sushi in mid-Michigan. Another amazing point is that they have the most reasonable prices in town! Maru and Sansu are all frills… I miss this place more than anything else from my time at MSU. All of the rolls are great I cannot even choose a favorite. The owner, Shawn, is a top-notch chef and takes more pride in his establishment than most. If you are on a budget, they offer low prices every day, daily specials, tea, soup and salad comes with their special rolls(all 40 of them). If you’re not on a budget, this is the best place to splurge. I can never choose just 2 or 3 rolls!

Definitely not my favorite sushi place in the area but it is close. Personally, I prefer Sansu, but Sushi Ya is more centrally located and easier to walk to. It’s a pretty basic sushi place, I like how casual it is. I usually go here for lunch with a couple friends. I definitely recommend it if you are on grand river and want sushi. Also, you should most definitely get the tempura ice cream for dessert.

My favorite sushi restaurant EVER!!! I’ve been eating at Sushi Ya since 2006! I no longer live in Michigan and have tried to find a replacement for Sushi Ya in my city but haven’t found anything close to this gem. :( Is there any chance you could open a location in Austin or start shipping your food? ;) The tempura rolls are my absolute favorite, but everything on the menu is deeelicious!!! :)

When I think of Sushi, I think of Sushi Ya in East Lansing. When I ask others where their favorite Sushi restaurant is, very often I hear«Sushi Ya!». I’m such a repeat customer that the servers know pretty much what I order to drink, the appetizer that I order and more. Very good service and the food quality is fantastic. If you are thinking about trying Sushi Ya, check it out, you will be pleased.

I came here a few years ago with the Bo and it was an awful experience. The sushi rolls were awful. My sister recently turned me on to sushiya after she tried it during finals week and had a really great experience. My sister and I came here on a slow Friday lunchtime. We ordered the curry chicken katsu don, spicy tuna roll, Tiger Roll, and Chirashi bowl. The salmon in the Chirashi bowl was a bit slimy, but other than that everything else was really delicious! I really loved the spicy tuna roll and the curry chicken katsu don a lot! Those two items were the highlights of the meal for me and I will come back here to get these two items and you should too! Remember to ask for some hot tea!
