This is a great Co-op whether you are vegan, vegetarian(delicious cheeses!) or a carnivore(good selection of ethically farmed meat). In response to LVV, as a regular customer it’s my understanding that the discounts were discontinued because of concerns about competition from Whole Foods. You’ll be happy to know that they have been reinstated. The store has been in business since the 1970s and I’m sure it will continue. It’s a wonderful local resource.

My husband and I purchased a membership in fall 2014, after the cashier convinced us the discounts, applied twice monthly, would be worthwhile. Six months later the discounts vanish — very sleazy. The cashier and the store managers should have alerted such changes were in the works. I predict this store will be out of business in 1 year.

I buy most of my spices and legumes here and love how easy they make it to package up your«buy by the ounce/pound» items. Very friendly and helpful staff as well!

I can’t say enough about how friendly the staff is here! Great selection too and decent prices. I tried the vegan chickpea salad in their deli section and it was delish– I’ll be back!

ELFCO is well stocked with local food, fair trade food, organic food. I love their selected of dry bulk foods(granola, beans, chickpeas, etc.). They also have bulk Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap, bulk olive oil, bulk tea. Local produce, eggs, milk, bread, hummus. The membership is well worth the price, as you get discounts on select items. They even have a newsletter with all the weekly deals on their website, so you can check it out before you shop. There is also a community garden next door. You can sign up for a plot at the Garden Project website.

Best selection of healthy, bulk granola I have seen anywhere. In town for a few nights at hotel. Stopped in for organic yogurt, granola and fruit instead of eating hotel fare. Surprised at the various choices for such a small place. Great breads too. If I lived in lansing, I’d sign up in a flash!

I’m in Lansing on business, and as a vegan I usually have to get creative to get a good meal. ELFCO is a small co-op, but it had all the essentials I needed, including great vegan substitutes that Whole Foods doesn’t even stock. The staff was super nice as well. I would have liked to find some prepared foods and maybe a more robust fruit and veggie selection, but I understand that this is small place. Overall, ELFCO is a great option for vegans and vegetarians, or anyone, staying near MSU.

I have been coming to ELFCO on and off throughout my many years as a college student. Its a quaint little food co-op that has just about anything you would need. As with any food co-op, it always cost less in the long run to become a member. Given that the purchasing power of a smaller cooperative is limited, prices tend to be higher than a traditional supermarket. The advantage is knowing exactly where your goods are sourced from, and also knowing that you have a stake in the success of the business. ELFCO has a small, but high quality selection of fresh produce; a well stocked dairy case; plenty of dried goods; beer and wine; and a rather large selection of bulk foods. Meat is limited, but that’s typical of many food co-ops. The store also has some cleaning and personal hygiene products, albeit all natural and/or locally sourced.

Small but well-organized, quiet & relaxing, and if you can’t find what you need, the folks there will do their best to get it for you. Also, their bimonthly sales are amazing. Not the cheapest in town for many food staples(unless sales are going on) & their vitamin/supplement selection pales in comparison to other places like Foods for Living, BUT the produce is easily the freshest & most varied. Best of all, I walk in the door and I’m greeted by name & treated like family. Cliché as it is, that really makes all the difference to me. The staff there really cares about what they do & they genuinely want to share it with you.

Good selection of organic, minimally processed, and local foods, health and beauty products, and household supplies. A few books and mags. Strong, but not exclusive emphasis on local suppliers. The store is rather small, but they pack a lot more in there than one might expect. Many bulk items. Members receive special discounts the 10th of every month.

I love a good co-op! It’s the second best place to get my hippie on. I was excited to see them sold Calder’s Milk and had a decent bulk food section. Their selection of other grocery items is moderate and they don’t have much in the way of prepared food but the items them have are good. I enjoy this store more than it’s next door neighbor Foods for Living although Foods for Living is larger and has a greater selection.

I really love shopping here. It’s big enough to find what you need, and small enough to get to know the people who work there. You can find lots of locally-sourced items here, from produce to eggs to milk to fantastic Zingermans bread and Woody’s mediterranean food. They also have a nice selection of organic and fair trade coffees! I would recommend joining [for a low fee] so you have access to the many great sales and member discounts going on all the time. And get a coffee club punch card!
