We have been passing this restaurant for years, and I have always wanted to stop, but as we are based in Montauk, getting back to the far side of East Hampton often seems daunting. I WISHWEHADDONETHISYEARSAGO. The staff in this small family friendly restaurant is welcoming and attentive. We had the green salad with the house tarragon vinaigrette. followed by the Teriyaki Shrimp with Fried Rice, the Grilled Salmon with Baked Potato, and the Tuna with Chili Seaweed and Veg. Dessert was Key Lime Pie and Baklava. Everything was perfect. I hope it does not take us 20 more years to get back!

Friendly, attentive service. The food was excellent: well prepared and tasty. The seafood was perfectly cooked and fresh. The gray sole was delicious. Décor was comfortable and relaxing. We will definitely return.

What’s really great about Café Max is that the chef, Max, is ALWAYS visible. That’s really a great sign of a solid owner, so kudos to them for that… I didn’t have ANY issues with Café Max at all — but I also didn’t have any true passion for it. I came here with my wife and father-in-law last weekend, and we had some nice wine with our meal. Apps: +Baked Clams: pretty good. Done well, seasoned well, and nice and hot. Garlic, white wine, and a nice crust paired perfectly with our white wine of choice. Entrée: +Pasta: Also pretty good, like the baked clams. Service/Experience: +GOOD. They refilled our wine and waters often, brought bread out as we needed it, and we’re pretty friendly with us. The only negative I had was the wait time; there was a bit of wait for our plates to come out in each course, even with a house that wasn’t close to full. Café Max would be a nice little stop on your way out, or home, from the Hamptons. I’d recommend it to people for that reason, but I wouldn’t inform people to go out of their ways to try it! Solid little spot though.

Mediocre at best… and yet they are consistently busy. The food is good but they are missing Zest.

Once again, the«tried and true» provided wonderful, fresh seafood and a friendly atmosphere. Hard to choose between the liver and onions(where else can you find that dish??) and the cod. Went for the fish and was not disappointed. Friendly service, good desserts, and never a bad meal at this moderately priced Hamptons favorite.

Not the greatest atmosphere, but something has kept the place busy for close to 25 years. Well prepared dishes, especially fish in a restaurant patronized by year around residents. No reservations so don’t plan on going weekends in season unless you show up at 5:30.

Below average food. Overpriced — $ 24 for fried shrimp — really! Lifeless atmosphere and service. Stay home and grill.

We tried this place with some friends who invited us. They knew the chef«Max» who came over and introduced himself. He started this restaurant over more than 5 years ago. We found the food well prepared, good portions and just plain good. Comfortable is probably the best adjective. If you are not looking for fancy food that consists of things that you don’t know and are looking for a place that everyone should enjoy, it is recommended. They had specials but we all ordered off the menu. Fish, pasta and veal dishes were all good.
