SPECTRE Arts is a beautiful, albeit small, venue/art gallery located down the street from the Golden Belt. We visited during the most recent third Friday and were lucky enough to stumble upon their two year anniversary party: What a TREAT! Live music on their back«patio» area with lights hanging above make the space romantic and inviting. They also had Relay Foods present with snack samples, wine and Durham’s newest brewery Dueling Sloths slinging beer. The gallery inside was very small but I loved how many different artists they had represented, I even noticed some work by an artist that has a studio next door at Golden Belt Studios. SPECTRE Arts can also be rented out as an event space and while you might be hesitant driving up the street towards the studio, once you cut into Golden Belt, the neighborhood completely changes. Anyone who lives in Durham knows that it’s made up of «pockets», you can drive through an area and keep hitting these pockets of lower income housing and higher income housing on the same street. It’s definitely still changing as the safety factors as well. Durham’s got a long way to go, but I loved see the integration of what SPECTRE Arts is doing and the neighborhood feel of the venue(I mean come on, they had a piñata for kids!) Can’t wait to go back to this gallery for next months Third Friday!
