These are the kind of things that you come across on a road trip that you just have to stop and say wow. We had a nice lovely guided tour of this beautiful old mansion. We learned all about the airborne divisions in the purpose and what generally did. Personally I was more interested in the house and its history it was beautiful. I also love antiques and it was very nicely decorated and handle so much history in it it was and I stop to make to break up your trip. What’s a girl to do? When you’re on the road stop and look at the scenery.

The house itself is a magnificent thing. Huge, well laid out and with the creaky wood floors and stairs expected in a turn of the last century home. What is inside is equally impressive. I walked in, greeted by a friendly tour guide who offered the story of how the museum came to be, and then left me to explore. It’s a self-guiding tour, there’s explanations accompanying the displays, so I could take all the time I needed. It’s not a typical museum in that it was actually Lee’s home and it still maintains the feel of a home. Because it’s a nearly mid-twentieth century topic, the events and displays are not so old that it feels impersonal. It’s kind of like being in your grandparents or great-grandparents home. The first floor is the personal story of Lee and his wife. The second floor contains the history of the airborne and the third floor has artifacts of the era. It’s a fascinating museum and a low-key way to spend some time learning the origins of the Army Airborne.

Nice diversion on a cold day. Tremendous history lesson in regards to the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the man who created the Army Airborne — Gen Bill Lee. Housed in a terrific old southern mansion — in a neighborhood of old southern mansions — that the Lees bought for $ 4500 in the 1930s. If you are an old soldier or a history lover you’ll like this place!
