Long ago, I used to be a hardcore, hardbodied gym rat. 2 hours a day was the norm, and I had a gym in Southern Maryland that I LOVED… the since defunct Tri-Fitness. When Tri-Fitness closed, I opted for the only other gym that was close to my residence, Olympus of Dunkirk. A gym is a gym, right? You have weights, machines, and cardio equipment(I was never much of a class-taker). The staff was nice enough and, though the layout was different, it had basically everything I needed to stay in shape. But I hated going there. For one, it was dark and the acoustics were horriffic. Dealing with screaming benchpressing neanderthals I can deal with, but when it echos repeatedly… it can get tiring. Also, the gym was smaller and being smaller… equipment was in higher demand. Crowding could be a problem at times. Along with crowding comes over-use and eventually, work or broken equipment. This particular gym seemed exceedinly slow in replacing worn and torn items. Including the STILL defunct drinking fountain that leaks. All in all, the atmosphere and aged utilities made me enjoy working out less and less, until I pretty much gave up going to the gym altogether. The one bright place in Olympus is their very nice aerobics room. Large mirrored windows and a comfy flex-floor made this a great place for classes. But as I said, classes weren’t my thing. Repeated suggestions were left for managment but were largely unheeded. Too bad for Olympus of Dunkirk… I have a feeling they’re going to regret slacking in upkeep now that there’s another facility nearby.
