Being a newbie at this, I got some expert advice before I started getting bids from furniture re-upholsterers. While I have no doubt that she is extremely good at what she does, we were warned that she will say we need more fabric no matter what and that she might be pricey. She apparently requires a lot more fabric than anyone else. So I went with an open mind and 2 yards more fabric than even the most conservative estimate. First thing she said was that I would need more fabric. When I told her I had bought all I could, she said she could try to work with what I had. To be fair, she was spot on in her comments about how she wanted to work with the fabric and does have high standards for her own work. My issue is she came in almost $ 400 more than either of the other two bids I got. As I was walking out the door, she said she could do slipcovers instead at a price that was still $ 200 lower. But I don’t want slipcovers. I might have paid the $ 200 more if that had been her price to reupholster given her obvious skills and reputation for quality work. I get it that her talent might warrant her price and she is obviously staying in business. But after such a high bid, she then indicated the fabric would need to be washed to preshrink it if I went with slipcovers — fair enough. I could do it myself(13 yards of fabric won’t fit in my washing machine though) according to her exact specifications or she could do it for me for an additional $ 3/yard. Really? Don’t give me a sky high bid, then offer to cut $ 200 of price for slipcovers, which I don’t like the look of, only to creep the price back up by nickel and diming me on top of that for something you require to work with the fabric. Not okay. As an artist, I respect another artist’s right to earn a decent living. But she is too far above market for me.
