Back in the 80’s — Sew Smart was the only game in town — and even today it is still a great place to buy fabric(cut to order), trimmings, and get valuable information on sewing. Some of the ladies have worked here for-eh-ver. And we love that! Beats the heck out of «big box» stores. You get what you pay for — and the service here is terrific.

I have been in here several times now. The selection isn’t great. There isn’t much garment fabrics, its mostly quilter’s cottons. If they had more knits, and perhaps some voile or rayon, I would come here more. Also, I took one class here but it wasn’t very organized or set up like a sewing class is or should be. I had to bring my own machine with me. The one good side is they are taking JoAnn’s coupons!

This store is great — if you haven’t been here in a while(I’m talking maybe two or three years by now), you should come back because the store is under new, very friendly and helpful management. I liked the store’s wares well enough before, but the overall experience in the new store is much better. Sew Smart is one of the larger fabric stores in the suburbs and they have a wide variety of cotton fabrics for quilting, etc., but they also have a section in the back with upholstery and other types of fabrics(this section isn’t as big, but still a nice variety). If you have a project in mind, they are happy to help you pick out fabrics and provide guidance. If you don’t have a project in mind, they have tons of samples around the store for inspiration. Be ready to spend some time to take it all in – it’s a beautiful shop with lots of light and color. One other good thing about Sew Smart is that it’s located on Oakland Avenue in Doylestown, so there are often metered spots available before the store between Clinton Street and Hamilton Street. It’s only a quarter per hour if I recall correctly and they don’t require payment on Sundays or after 5, I believe on weekdays/Saturdays. There is also a paid lot across the street from Sew Smart, but it’s usually full. Overall though, a very convenient location.

I cannot believe that I am the first to review Sew Smart! This little fabric shop is a modern sewist’s dream! They carry wonderful contemporary lines of high quality fabric. There is also a full complement of notions, independent designer patterns, and inspirational samples. Staff are always friendly. I don’t venture there as often as I should since I live about 40 minutes away, but Sew Smart is definitely worth the drive. If you’re looking for a traditional quilt shop, this probably isn’t your place. If you’re in search of the bright, current fabrics you’ve seen in projects on Pinterest, the well curated collection fills the bill. Small selection of Japanese imports in the back room along with a few garment fabrics. I think they teach classes too – there was a teen there working on a pair of PJ pants. This shop sells quality, which of course costs more. If you’re expecting JoAnns prices(which are creeping up too) you may experience sticker shock.
