Small Farms CSA is a collaboration of Love is Love Farm in Douglasville and Jenny-Jack Sun Farm in Pine Mountain. Both sell at local farmers’ markets and to restaurants throughout the Atlanta area. Weekly shares include several varieties of seasonal vegetables, with the occasional fruit and/or herb offerings, and there’s always one non-produce item like goat cheese, grits, eggs, honey, cornmeal, etc. in a week’s share. Aside from having an early batch of carrots turn rubbery within a few days because I had not trimmed off the greens before storing them(you learn something new every day!) I’ve not been disappointed by any of the offerings to date. I was pretty well swiss-charded and kaled out by early June, but I guess that’s part of eating ‘seasonally.‘ The CSA cost comes out to be about $ 25 a week — you pay a full subscription($ 425) in advance. Buying an equivalent basket of food at a grocery store would be cheaper, but it’s impossible to replicate the feeling of getting to know the folks growing your food and knowing you’re supporting the local economy. Learning about new vegetables and the different ways of preparing them is fun too. Drop off locations are the Unitarian Universalist Congregation on Cliff Valley and the Quaker Friends Meeting House on Dekalb Avenue.
