Although I haven’t been back in years, I grew up in Douglas and all my memories are good. Douglas may not have the rich historical sites found in Tombstone or Bisbee, but there is a flavor that comes from being a tiny border town and authentic ranching community. The town was similar to Andy’s Mayberry in my day and we had a certain western freedom that is surely lost today. The heart of Douglas is probably the Hotel Gadsden which has remained a landmark and a beautiful relic that has lots to offer, including a great cowboy dining room. Talk about atmosphere. You can easily imagine the people and events that have taken place in there over the years and just sit in the lobby and reflect on the space. Other sites to visit include the old train station, a couple of cemetaries, the smelter stacks, the park on 10th st., the dip out on G st., the golf course out by the old airport, and several good restaurants. Travel to Slaughter Ranch passing D hill, and the municipal airport. La Fiesta is my favorite for authentic mexican food and history. Been there forever !

So why would I come to this small little town that has a population of 18,000? Easy, my mom grew up here. Every time someone gets married, has a baby, dies, or Memorial Day Weekend stroll’s along, I tag along for the 13 hour drive from Los Angeles. It’s definitely not an easy trip, especially when my Dad drives like 60 mph on the free empty road, and there’s hardly any radio signal well I guess I can’t really complain. This town, which is rich with history and encompasses what it means by «small town» is definitely a little town that should be visited… even though there’s not much to do. The people are scarce but they certainly have character – the old men in their cowboy hats, big belt buckles and plaid shirts and the women with their big hair and big ass nails well… it’s awesome. Hey, if you need a truck ha well everyone owns one! What else? It’s the last US town before you hit Agua Prieta, Mexico! If you have a passport I say you hop across the border and take a look around. Pick up some fresh made tortilla’s, get some Mexican ice cream, oh and please don’t cross the border if you don’t 1. Know Spanish, 2. Don’t look somewhat ethnic, 3. in a nice car. Don’t be stupid. Alrighty, I hope you visit this place… er uh yeah.
