Jim, our server, absolutely made my and my friend’s night. He embodies what Friendly’s is all about. The man. I hope he’s still working there.

Bad customer service, I went in late on a Wed night after going to the movies and by the look of astonishment on the wait staff’s faces you would have thought it was a breach of some social rule to walk in that late(8:45). Got a seat and was promptly forgotten about, wait staff was more interested in talking to each other than doing anything with customers(I think there was 6 – 8 people there in 3 groups…) I left before ordering, after 10 minutes they hadn’t even asked about a drink.

We came for breakfast at 9:50AM on a Saturday. We walked in and waited probably about 10 minutes before anyone greeted us. And they did not seem that busy. We sat down and we were given our menus. She didn’t give my son crayons and the place mat, I went up and got that myself. She took drink orders and was pretty frantic, acting like the place was crazy busy, when it really didn’t seem that way. I could hear another waitress yelling at the cooks that they, «messed up these omelets beyond repair.» We got our drinks and then it was as if we were totally forgotten. It took an hour before we got our food. I asked another waitress if I could have more coffee —(we never got it refilled) and she looked at me like I was nuts and said yes. 10 minutes later, no coffee. When our waitress came by again i said«may I have more coffee please, I asked the other wait-» she cut me off and said, «I know but I couldn’t get you more coffee because I was busy getting your food» I was horrified. Other tables got up and left, another table got up and left after they brought their food out, it must have been so wrong that they did not want to wait any longer. Our food finally came out. Our pancakes were ok. French toast ok. Over easy eggs ok. Scrambled eggs disgusting. They looked like they were cooked hours ago and were cold. The waitress frantically got us more syrup… when no one at the table even wanted or used any. We had a $ 5 coupon which the coupon said to present at the beginning of the meal, so we did, and the waitress was like oh I’ll get that after. Then she brought out our check without the coupon on it. Then had to go back and add the coupon on it. I would have liked to have spoken to a manager, but it was impossible to get anyone’s attention. It took an hour and a half to have what should have been a quick breakfast. I called later to complain about my experience and they are sending me coupons. Really? like a coupon would get me to come back? Well, maybe for some ice cream — they can’t mess that up too bad, can they? Or maybe to a different Friendly’s… because I certainly can’t justify going back to that one, ever again.

Friendly’s is all about ridiculous junk food and ice cream. Cottage fries with sour cream and cheese — yes please. Tiny mozzarella sticks — yum. I some kind of chicken strips and cheese sandwich for the main entrée, and while I certainly wouldn’t recommend it as an everyday thing, I had to admit it was pretty good. O course, the ice cream is where it’s at. Best of all was the Reese’s Pieces sundae. Really any ice cream + PB sauce = heaven. My waitress, Jackie, was very attentive and as the name of the restaurant suggests… Friendly. I’m a picky eater and everything came out the way I requested and she was very nice about it. She also kept my soda full, always bonus points for me.

I’m trying to do my part in increasing to Unilocal reviews in Syracuse every time that I’m in town for a visit. After a long day of travelling from the West Coast, by the time our flight arrived in Syracuse, few places were still open for dinner. Friendly’s was one of the few places still open for dinner at 11pm so they do get a thumbs up for that. When we arrived, there were two groups of teenagers having dessert. It seemed like the servers were really pushing their customers to have dessert instead of dinner since they were closing at midnight. The servers were friendly but not very attentive and seemed more interested in socializing with each other. Our main server forgot our drinks. The majority of the menu is a calorie buster, but I like that they have a 555 calorie option of entrees. The food is pretty generic. I was excited about their cotton candy with pop rocks ice cream, but unfortunately they were out of it. Luckily my second choice, butter crunch, was rich and delicious. The ice cream is what really makes a trip to Friendly’s worth it.
