I was stoked to finally have the opportunity to try the infamous White Castle slider while in Detroit. We don’t have this on the West Coast. There really isn’t much to say. I ordered a cheese slider with the works(basically, onions, ketchup and relish(I think — I didn’t recognize it). The slider is cute. The slider didn’t taste good. The slider patty had an unappetizing texture. The slider was thrown away after one bite. The end.

Yuck… Wanted to try a white castle slider for years, been there done that. Couldn’t finish it, if you have had a decent hamburger in your life, this doesn’t cut it.

I’m not going to praise or salivate over my descriptions of how good their food is, because I’ve lived in this area my whole life and eat White Castle frequently. My wife goes to college in Detroit, and we frequently go to this location very late at night. Never had any problems whatsoever, and the food is always hot, fresh, and good quality. Their drive-thru workers are always courteous and friendly, even though I’m sure they have a god-awful job. The speed of service is typical of a White Castle: mostly slow but not intolerable. Simply put, the environment is Detroit. There may or may not be a homeless person mulling around the drive-thru area, but that’s not the store’s fault.

The grub is serviceable guilty pleasure. If you’re familiar with White Castle you know the deal. I’ll only allow myself one of their jalapeño cheeseburgers, otherwise trouble awaits. Love that they have the chutzpah to serve«Chicken rings». If you’re gonna serve gross, unnatural processed chicken why not in an eyebrow raising shape that flaunts it? McDonald’s should take note. Never seen the«calamari fries» that Unilocaler Michael M wrote about. The closest thing WC offers is the fried clam strips. I’d be crossing my fingers and taking a deep breath if I was about to chow down some fried squid from White Castle, that’s for sure. Panhandlers are a common sight at this locale. The last time I was inside there was even a guy passed out in one of their booths. He had a huge mess around him, including a 40 with a bit of beer in it that he accidentally kicked over. One of the ladies working there came out and told him to beat it 3 different times, and it wasn’t until she told him the cops were on the way that he finally did, dropping a full tall boy of beer in the parking lot. Alchie probably thought somebody robbed him when he came to later. The amount of litter generated from this one White Castle is stunning. I see it all over North End, New Center, Midtown and«Ghetto New Center» — the NW Goldberg neighborhood on the other side of the Lodge. White Castle patrons, dispose of your food wrappers and cups properly, puh-leeze! The drive-thru here is very slow. You’re better off driving to the Michigan Ave. location even if you are much closer to this one. Both have two lanes with a «Vittleveyor» — that’s the conveyor belt and food bucket that delivers the delicious greasiness to the second drive-thru lane. Despite the name, White Castle does NOT offer fried vittles. What a gyp!

At night the homeless will come up to your car while you’re sitting at the drive-thru. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not entirely comfortable with people walking up to me in the dark. So I avoid this location, at least at night, which kind of sucks because soemtimes a few hamburgers for the way home sounds very attractive. They get a star for being a White Castle.

The reason for my visit to White Castle was not because of the munchies or anything fun like that. It was mostly due to the fact that there aren’t any White Castles in California. At least not in So. Cal… so it was kind of like hmm sure why not. We’ll see what the fuss was about… and well it’s just like any other junk food joint. Just like a freaking McDonald’s.nothing different or better about it. Same band unhealthy food but good for picture opportunities to send out to the friends while eating one of them tiny burgers.

My trips to MI area to visit family is always a great excuse to stop by a White Castle. Yes, i know, it’s fast food but it’s pretty tasty for just fast food. My favorite things to get here are the Fish Slyders and Onion Chips. *nom* Since they’re not available nation-wide, i would suggest for anyone who is within reach of them and has not been, to stop by. If nothing else then for the sake of saying you’ve been to White Castle and grabbing a bite of some quickly made food.

I have to admit that when fellow Detroit Unilocaler Dan R. suggested this establishment after a late night of karoke I was more than a bit skeptical. My previous experience with white castle was limited to greasy onions masqerading as food. But after a very full evening I was pleasantly surprised to find that indeed, white castle did just hit the spot. Dan went for the burgers while I got chicken rings(a shape that decidedly *does not* occur in nature) and we split a large order of cheese sticks. The double drive lanes meant that our order was ready and in our hot little hands in just minutes. And we got to watch our food magically appear before us on a nifty food elevator. My chicken rings were tender and juicy. Dan’s burgers were predictably greasy but he loved them. The cheese sticks were hot, melty and had just the right amount of salt and parsley in the batter. Yum. Yum. Yum. And in a surprising nod to social responsibilty, all of WC’s packaging is made of recycled waste, including their plastic cups.

The only time I get to eat WhiteCastle is when you catch me out here in the east or deep in the south ya digg. I love their mini burgers. They got this one called the wave or something live that. Their calamari fries are off the hook. Their mini jalapeño burgers are good. 10 burgers for under $ 10 plus calamari fries and a drink. They location is hood, but after you cross them bricks in the road everything else gets hood as well. Tellin yall, they need to expand to the west and they need to make one 24 hrs.
