I ordered the fried pork chops with mac and cheese and barbecue fries. Service was ok. They charge you a quarter to use your credit card. The outside and place looks good. The barbecue sauce is slightly nasty. The fried pork chop was ok. The good thing was the mac and cheese had a slight bite to it. Prices seemed a tad high for what it was

The best ribs and soul food sides in the D! Fried shrimp is another favorite, and don’t forget the peach cobbler! They are open late and whether you come at 11AM or 2 the food quality is the same. Even thought I live out of town now, this is a must have as soon as I hit the city! I do suggest you call your order in. and don’t forget the BBQ fries:-) Enjoy!

A little eerie neighboorhood due to the location. Food is ok, I was hungry when I drove to Detroit, so had to devour something, ended up stopping by the Uptown BBQ. I ordered dinner full slab with sides of mac and cheese and candied yams. I have to say that my slabs were not juice and hard. They accept cash only, so be prepared. Also, everything inside is surrounded by bulletproof glass. Beware!

By far may favorite BBQ joint in the city … Has the old traditional feel and taste. HOWEVER, the old timey lack of promptness as it pertains to estimated food wait times is played out. This community has supported y’all for years. Get with the times, be prompt, and do better. Your food is delicious … Make the trip a pleasant one as well.

BBQ Heaven! This food is crazy good. Somebody’s Mama needs to be slapped! And I mean that in the most loving way possible. The Mac and cheese is probably the best you’ll ever have, baked beans are orgasmic, the green beans are so flavorful and the peach cobbler is actual REAL soul food peach cobbler. The BBQ sauce has just the right tang and the Ribs make this place one of the best meals you’ll ever have.

I hate it when I spend good money on bad food. I ordered the chicken(BBQ) it was beyond old and tough. My sides were Mac and cheese and yams. The Mac and cheese taste like it came out of a kraft frozen dinner, the yams were the best part of the meal they were good but not great:(

Tried to call and place an order. The man who answered to phone was unnecessarily curt and rude. He said he was the manager, James. I questioned whether I should call back later to try and place an order, and he was verrry rude. This saddens me because the one other time I ordered from there the food was really good, but I will not patronize the business again. I hope the owner considers a new manager.

How in the heck does a rib joint not have ribs? We ran out and they won’t be any available until 2 o’clock. The worst thing was the lady taking orders that kept walking away in mid sentence before she heard the order. I love to support local businesses but they have to at least act as though they want my business. Please do not waste your time going here you will be disappointed. I had to give this a 1 star rating because I couldn’t give it a –5 stars

I was very disappointed with the ribs they were not fully cooked, almost raw. I put them in the oven for about 15 mins. The frozen french fried were not done either. I could recook them because they had sauce all over them. The greens seem like they came from a can. But, the Beans and Cornbread was delicious…

Please don’t waste your time. the food is awful. Rib tips were burnt, mac & cheese taste like mush, and greens taste like they were cooked with sugar. Place looks run down and gloomy. Needs an uplift. I recommend paying the extra money and dine from Motor City Soul Food or Southern Fires. Buy a better ticket, get a better ride. I would like a refund !!

This place is fantastic. Meat is cooked and seasoned perfectly. Best ribs in town. More expensive than your average take out(a meal will run you 9 – 12) but way cheaper than some snob place like Slows. And better. And the servings are bigger. Only suggestion, go on a day when they have the smoker out in the parking lot. Normally on a sunny, nice day. Do yourself a favor, skip Steves and Slows and all that and just come to uptown for real barbeque.

Uptown is good. Nothing special @ all, personally I prefer Vickie’s, because you get actual Que, not baked broiled que. When you see the smoker out in front, or you see that it is a sunny day, that is the day to hit up Uptown, because that is the day that they have some real BBQ, not oven que. Besides that they’re cool, I like the Gizzards w/their spicy BBQ sauce. The sauce is good though @ least, it’s not just straight bought from the market up the street.

i was really in the mood for ribs and i just got done devouring a short slab of ribs from uptown. the sauce was delicious. perfectly sugary, salty and smoky. the greens were perfection. i love greens that only need to be put in your mouth. the mac n cheese was some of the most satisfying i have had. the cornbread was good, although i prefer it sweet to savory. the rib meat itself was the disappointment. although it was good. it was obviously not bbq’d. it also was pretty chewy. in parts it had exactly what i wanted, crunchy, tasty pork. sadly, those parts were only on the very outer edges. the peach cobbler was too sweet. and some of the peaches had become mushy. the peach cobbler was also cold and only had a few tiny chunks of pastry. i think i may return for other offerings. uptown has all the regular soul food options. love, juston

Yum. Flavorful. Delicious. You enter and then look through the bullet proof glass at the luscious offerings. Vegetarians beware– just because it’s called a vegetable does not mean that it’s not seasoned with pork. Look– Slows has it’s place… and that place is over in the trendy side of town. Uptown’s place is where the people are– and the people know good soul food. Oh, did I mention that the lunch specials are huge and cheap?!

It’s a Soul Food joint in a poor neighborhood, what do you expect? I bought a chicken dinner. Good sauce, large portion. Chicken itself was not very good. Mash potatoes were strange. Mac-n-Cheese was 3 out of 5. Pros: Good, friendly service. Takes cash or card. Open late. Large portions. Good sauce, macaroni-n-cheese, cornbread muffins. Cons: Food has been sitting, and as previous review mentions it tastes like it was baked in a big oven, not slow smoked and grilled. Sides did not look appealing, and what you see it what you get. Bottom Line: Too bad about the food. The staff is friendly and the sauce is tasty. I won’t be back.

So what am i a food snob??? Of course not!!! I just like good food and whats wrong with that??? I’ve been craving BBQ for the past few days, Memorial Day just seems so far away, so i go to Uptown expecting something so quite delicious… First i didn’t want BBQ that was prepared in the oven, I can do that myself, and i didn’t want any surprises that the food was prepared in the oven or broiler so i called first and asked, the young lady informed me that the BBQ was done on a grill i also asked about them taking credit payments, they do so i go. I go under the impression that i would be getting some damn good BBQ!!! Not baked, steamed or broiled but actually charcoal infused smoke, and flavor… What did i get!!! Frigging baked ribs. I ordered the Rib and Shrimp combo, it came with two sides and a corn bread muffin. I also ordered the peach cobbler… Here’s the metrics, so you walk in place your order sorta in an assembly line fashion, you choose your sides and order whatever else. Some of the sides was suspect, so i got greens and corn on the cob… Average wait time … I got home to eat what i thought was gonna be a delicious meal, hit all spots of BBQ craving… instead mere meh! Absolutely baked ribs no doubt about it!!! Not a wink of smoke flavoring. Not to mention i finished the whole thing. You get about 6 rib bones and 8 shrimp I guess i feel like it was only worth two stars simply because it was not what the doctor ordered… When i want BBQ i want BBQ damn-it. I was better off picking up some KFC Grilled chicken and adding my own BBQ sauce… NOTREALLYWORTHGOINGBACK! I almost failed to mention the Peach Cobbler, it was good until i got towards the middle and it began to get really mushy EWWW XoP, Peach mush is not good, almost like peach cobbler flavored porridge

On my way back home from downtown Detroit, a colleague of mine who is visiting and I ventured out to Uptown BBQ. I have read about the establishment when I was looking for BBQ joints in Southeast MI, so it was one my radar of places to visit. If you are expecting Uptown BBQ, to be like Slow’s, don’t! Don’t expect to find a table, servers, bar, etc., it’s all Take Out orders! So be prepared! A description of the establishment… parking lot is small, but there is ton’s of parking on the street… when you walk in, go to your left to the back and if there is a line, wait… as you wait, decide what you want to get. If you are looking to get something quick and sample the foods, order the four bone meal with two sides. I ended up ordering full slab dinner meal(two of them), each cost around $ 19. The sides I got were greens, string beans and Yam! The order comes with corn bread. Their greens are great, best I’ve had in long time, string beans are excellent and their yam is to die for! I’ve never had such a wonderful yam’s. I had couple of the ribs before I left the parking lot and you can taste the charcoal taste, the sauce is running and excellent… I also hear that their mac and cheese are good as well, but they were out… they have lot of options when ordering, so I would recommend that you check their website out first before you go. Now, if you typically only go down to downtown and avoid other parts of Detroit, you don’t know what you are missing out. the folks that work there are nice and you get that family feeling! I would encourage you to give this place a try if you are in/around Detroit!

I have been to several BBQ joints in the Detroit area, and Uptown is the king hands down. Who doesn’t love the idea of being able to get great BBQ at 3am? Ribs are very meaty with a great sauce. The sides? Which ones? There are so many to choose from. The Mac n Cheese, Greens, Corn, are all favorites. But that Peach Cobbler! Oooooh Man! Get that Cobbler! Well worth the drive in from Ann Arbor each time.

By far, Uptown is the best BBQ spot to go to in Detroit. It’s a carry-out restaurant that makes the best BBQ sauce there is. Usually my mom orders a slab if we are all eating, or just a personal dinner for me. Occasionally you will catch a special for $ 10.99, and the regular price is roughly $ 15(for a slab). When they give it to you in to-go containers, they always put the ribs on top of the fries… which then become BBQ fries. Trust me, this is the best way to have fries. They also have shrimp combos there, but I don’t eat shrimp so I couldn’t tell you if they compare to the excellence of the ribs :-)
