This is a odd place… surround by industrial buildings and the sound of a train wheels screeching… I recommend parking in the lot across from the building. There was a little scrawny security guard there and it was 5 bucks to park. We walked in the side door and was greeted by 2 beard wearing security guards showed our ID and boom we are in… now there’s the bar and some high tops. Then off to the left is the theater and straight through is the huge wear house we went for the titties4pitties event and the burlesque show. seating sucked! Had to stand… and the best show had to be the stripper who scaled a 20 ft. Pole. They had burlesque dancers in all shapes and sizes. I thought that was pretty cool. They all were beautiful in their own way. They had vendors there from photographers, beard mafia cartels…, cute embroidered pillows and a pretties for pitty’s booth as well as 50÷50… Also had a basket raffle where the proceeds went to the benefit and we won two of the prizes the vendors donated so that was pretty neat. As the night went on I could tell the bartenders working got drunker and more less attentive to the people who were actually purchasing drinks. I left little bit early but overall I give the venue and the place four stars that was well organized despite the little annoying mishaps. but just be careful this is a bad area don’t walk alone and make sure you park in a well lit area.

To the three bartenders at Tangent Gallery last night: Never have I experienced such terrible customer service. This is coming from someone with many years of employment in the customer service field. I so wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt. It was a busy evening and I understand that managers/owners want to get by with as little staff as possible. And I certainly was not going to be «that customer» by waving money or snapping my fingers in an attempt to get served. All three times I came to the bar for a drink, it was at least a fifteen minute wait and the line was not even two people deep. The last time I didn’t even get to order because after I had been waiting about fifteen minutes and a fellow patron pointed out I was next, one of you completely stopped any kind of work for several minutes to chat with your friends, right next to me. That was enough. While the art was intriguing, the DJ’s were magnificent, and the people were splendidly attired, they could not make up for your lack of service. Before I left, my handsome, wonderful fiancé politely asked if we had done something to cause you to treat us like that. Another of you responded with nothing but disrespect and vitriol, telling us to, «Go home!» After leaving the building, we saw the third one of you. Again, my fiancé inquired what we had done to warrant such service. Your response was, «This is my first break in five hours». Not one of you attempted any kind of explanation or apology or thanked us for waiting. I have been to events at Tangent Gallery before and did not have the awful level of service that I had last night. Good luck, Tangent Gallery, if these three bartenders continue working for you. You’ve lost my business.

Tangent is the best gallery I have ever had the pleasure of showing work at. I always enjoy the myriad of works at the shows and they really are quite friendly and easy to communicate with. I highly recommend this gallery if you’re in the mood for a non-pretentious, down-to-earth kind of gallery/show. \m/

The Tangent Gallery /Hastings Ballroom hosts a variety of events throughout the year. I’ve been to art gallery openings, techno dance parties, movie screenings and director talks, rummage sales and concerts with a variety of bands. They do a good job with the space and the events they host. Sometimes there’s a cover charge, but I don’t think I’ve ever paid more then $ 5 to get into an event. They have a bar and drinks are maybe a bit on the high side — but they have no other way to get revenue to keep their cool building up and running. There’s a fire pit sculpture out back that always has a roaring fire in the winter, it’s a great place to hang out and chat with others that are there for events. You can park on the street if you want — I usually do — but if you aren’t comfortable with that there’s a parking lot across the street that has a $ 5 fee. If you get a chance — check out their FB page to keep up to date on all their eclectic events.

We rented this space to première a movie my husband made. The owner was fabulous, and easy to work with. The bar was open, the sound guy was amazing and the projector was awesome. Overall a wonderful experience.

Always something interesting going on. Not overly publicized, but always a good crowd, & always a good time. Not your average gallery. Eclectic choice of shows. Great staff! Great bar!

With the adjacent Hastings St Ballroom in the same building, this is a decent underutilized space for shows. I went to Tromadance, the only free film festival in the country, here last month. Lots of Troma stuff there, for fans of low budget exploitation films. I’ve been to other film and art events here before, too. I saw the notoriously bad Santa Claus Conquers the Martians here once. They’ve got a show with Stanley Kubrick themed art coming up in September. Sometimes they have rock, electronic and hip hop shows here, too. They never seem to do much in the way of promoting them. I never see it in the Metro Times; I ask the security guard outside what’s going on when I ride my bike by. Hell, they didn’t even have any Unilocal reviews till I pounded one out with my grubby little paws. They have a nice wood burning stove outside that makes for a nice little bonfire for smokers or for people who like bonfires.
