came in around dinnertime on a friday or saturday and it was fairly empty and quiet, but they were about to have a DJ later that night. the lady behind the bar was very friendly and cooked a mean burger. fries were good too. beer selection is somewhat unique and random. great old neighborhood bar in an 1890’s building and a great part of town. there are several other similar bars in the area, so doing a little Springwells barhop night would be perfect.

Super friendly neighborhood bar. Modelo Especial on draft. Outdoor patio! Met with owner Joe and his mom, Julie, today after lunch to watch a little hockey on the tele and drink a beer. They have bottle specials during Tiger’s games, house dollar-shot concotions, and three beers on tap, one of which is Modelo Especial which I love. The best feature is their small but SUNNY backyard patio… such a treasure in the summer months and something Detroit generally lacks. There’s also a small but functional bar menu to keep the stomach warm, and a pool table. Julie was full of charm, great stories and wisdoms, reminiscing about old Detroit lore(the good, the bad, and the ugly), the house rules(no swearing while she’s on shift — you will only get ONEWARNING, as I learned), and the history of the bar(it’s gone through several owners and name changes over the decades, most recently Kaysa’s Pub, whose sign erroneously but nostalgically still hangs over the door), though Joe’s re-opened the spot recently and given it a new utopian name as a sign of the positive changes he’s envisioning for the neighborhood). Also, if you’re there long enough, Julie might impart during the course of a conversation some of her expertise in Maltese cuisine, which had my mouth watering… maybe some of that food will make it onto the menu one day.
