Super excited to try this place, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. The atmosphere is cool and in the summer, it was nice to sit outside on the patio. Chairs are not entirely comfortable since they are basically old school cafeteria chairs. But still fun. There were three of us and we ordered two apps and drinks followed by entrees for each of us. The burrata was good. I don’t remember the other app. Two had the fried chicken, which was really good. The pickle brine is interesting. A little salty, but still good. The collared greens were super bitter. I had the scallops, which it turns out is only, like, 4 scallops. They were really good but the dish was WAY over priced. After living in Boston for 6 years, I’m used to paying a premium for good food. But we’re in Detroit, and that dish was more expensive than what I would generally pay in Boston for the same portion. Not cool. Also, I had a cocktail, which was really tasty. But my glass had a giant ice cube in it, which in itself is fine, but it meant there were only about 3 sips of the actual cocktail in the glass. So again, way overpriced for the portion.

Visiting Detroit for the car show again this year and decided to branch out of downtown and into corktown. The food is really great. We had the porkbelly with grits, frenchtoast, mimosas and pickle Brine Chicken with a waffle. All of the food was amazing and very filling. The only complaint I would have is that the music did get too loud sometimes. I do enjoy some of the Europe punk music they played but at the level it was at it was overwhelming. I would drop the review half a star for that but where they lacked in comfort of noise level they over exceeded in drink preparation and presentation of food.

We had heard great things about this place And it lived up to everything we’ve heard! Beautiful décor. Make sure you look up and appreciate the ceiling as well as look down and appreciate the floor which used to be from a basketball court in Detroit. We ordered Gold Rush drinks — bourbon, ginger lemon deliciousness! The fried chicken brined in pickle juice served with buttermilk gravy was awesome! And the side of collard greens with huge chunks of bacon were delicious! Hubby had the trout and enjoyed!

I have very mixed feelings writing this review. I called the restaurant before 5 of us headed over, and since they don’t really take reservations, I was told that there might be a wait for a while, so my party was prepared to wait. We arrived and were told there was a wait between 60 and 75 minutes. As annoying as that was, we agreed, because it’s Auto Show Week in Detroit, and it’s Saturday. The hostess was lovely, but really didn’t care how long we waited. Perhaps we were too old, but whatever the reason, when we approached the 2 hour mark of waiting, I got vocal. We had ordered some appetizers while we were standing and waiting because we were about to faint from hunger. At the two hour mark, I told the hostess that at the least we should have the apps that we had ordered comped. The hostess said she would check with her manager. We were seated about 10 Minutes later. No manager ever visited our table. Now, I can’t fault the food or the cocktails. They were more than fantastic. And my guests concur wholeheartedly. Still no manager. When the bill came(no manager) we were given an industry discount of 15%. That was lovely(honestly) but no restaurant ever is worth a 2 hour wait, even during auto show season. So my review of the food would be 3 and a half stars, while the review of the service would warrant one star. So it’s 2 stars, unfortunately.

Came for New Years Eve dinner, prix fixe menu. Very tasty! The braised lamb on top of the seared rice was definitely the highlight. Chef seemed a bit too into preserved citrus(the lemon pasta was a bit of a bridge too far into the marriage of sour and bitter), but hey, if you’re not taking risks you’re not trying hard enough! Also had a really nice Michigan pinot noir that once it opened up was very drinkable at a really nice price point. But really we want to come back for the fried chicken…

Went here on Sunday for dinner around 6. We were able to sit right away. This is the second time I’ve been here. Started with the chefs board, it was delicious. They change up what is on it, so it was different from last time. The explain everything on it which is helpful. I got the hunters pasta which was really good. The fried chicken is also good, but if you don’t like salt I wouldn’t get it. The staff was very friendly as well.

I’ve been to GCG three times now and I’ve been pretty happy every time(super happy for two of those times). I don’t know why this spot seems to get a bad rap. The first time we went I ordered the pickle-brined fried chicken that was served with corn bread and a three pepper gravy. I thought it was seriously legit. If you’re not into pickles or pickled things, I would think you may not like it, because well, I mean, it’s pickled-brined. But, I’m not that person, so I loved it. The pepper gravy was super tasty as well, and I’m not a huge gravy fan. I couldn’t finish all of the chicken and ended up taking some of it to go as well. My partner ordered the short ribs, which he found to be good and tender, although the star of the show was certainly the chicken. Next time we went we both ordered the fried chicken because, like, it was so good the first time. Oh, we also saw Jack White there, so the fifteen year old girl inside of me swooned over her dinner and immediately texted my friends because we are creepy. Last time we went for brunch. I ordered the burger, which came with pimento cheese, a thousand island-like dressing and came with fries. I thought it was good, but also left a bit raw. I ordered it medium and it was most definitely medium rare, some parts more rare than others. I didn’t send it back, I thought it still tasted really good, it just wasn’t prepared how I had specified. My partner got their grits and … something? I don’t remember what his dish was exactly, but he tries to get me to go back every weekend so he can order it again. Of course, there are just too many places on my list to try, so I don’t like hitting up the same spot all of the time. I also got this fancy coffee/bourbon cocktail with super dope homemade whipped cream. Also, the space is gorgeous. Parking is always a nightmare unless you were to come during the week, but if you’re down to pay, you can park in the lot behind Mercury Bar. Sometimes I’ll park across the street in the neighborhood and just walk over.

I have one word to describe the food… BLAND. Bring some hot sauce or seasoning if you go. The ambiance is excellent. I had the fried chicken that tasted like vinegar due to the brine. The Fritas tasted like the Cast Iron pan… Burnt. I had such high expectations for this place. I did enjoy the Brattas appetizer.

I love Gold Cash Gold. For drinks. For dinner. For brunch at lunch. The interior is a stunning refurbished pawn shop, with beautiful inlaid woodwork, stained glass, and panels of old signs. An amazing blend of new and old, and done in a warm, but austere sensibility. The caesar salad is spot on – among the better ones I have ever had. The«fish and chips» is a lovely surprise and shares nothing in common with its namesake, except the base ingredients. And, oh my, the pickle-brined fried chicken. I may have gained ten pounds this year eating that twice. Worth it. Cocktails are fabulous, and so is the charcuterie board, so if you have a looong dinner wait, just cozy up to the bar, get the drinks flowing, and chow down on briney, pickley, salty, fatty goodness!!!

Don’t let the negative reviews dissuade you from trying out this restaurant. The large majority of what our table ordered was delicious. For appetizers our table of four ordered the chef’s board & burrata. The sourdough bread looked like it was heated on a charcoal grill, and honestly the black grill lines did make the bread taste burnt. It would be so much better heated on a flat grill. The kimchi had a strong ammonia scent that was really unappetizing to me. I love kimchi too, so I was disappointed. On the other hand my friend thought the kimchi was amazing. The pickled vegetables were really great & I’d order a large bowl if I could. My friends really liked the burrata appetizer that they split. For entrees we ordered the fried chicken, pot roast, flat iron steak, and orecchiette. The fried chicken was good and did not taste like pickle brine at all. The gravy tasted like milk gravy with some pickled jalapeño juice thrown in: tasty. The«frites» were more like steak fries but were lacking the characteristic crispiness & tasted like they were fried with fish: not tasty. The orecchiette was(pan?) fried and sounded amazing with kale & winter squash, but was somewhat bland. My friend that ordered it enjoyed the dish. The pot roast and sauce were ethereal. Amazing. The roasted root vegetables(turnip or rutabaga) were delicious & so were the occasional pieces of citrus(white grapefruit?) My friend loved the steak & side of brussel sprouts. For dessert we ordered the buttermilk pie & smore. The smore was okay. The buttermilk pie was amazing when paired with the accompanying citrus sauce which really complimented the sweetness of the pie(it tasted like orange marmalade with skinned grapefruit segments). I’m never impressed with craft cocktails but my friends enjoyed theirs. My old fashioned drinks were expertly made. The bar was well stocked and had a decent selection of all spirits. Yes there were a few things that I wasn’t impressed with. Overall the food was very good, the service was friendly and efficient, and I would definitely go back again. The pot roast was so amazing I would have a hard time ordering anything else. We ordered several rounds of drinks, two appetizers, four entrees, and two desserts for a bill of ~$ 200 for four people.

I read about GOLDCASHGOLD in the Detroit Metro Times awhile back and was really looking forward to trying this new addition to the great food in Corktown. And I wasn’t disappointed. I went on a Thursday evening, parked in the $ 3 dollar community lot behind the Mercury Bar and walked over to GOLDCASHGOLD, which is set on the first floor of an old Detroit Pawn Shop. The restaurant was bustling with guests, even on a cold Thursday. I was nevertheless seated quickly. I started with an IPA served on nitrogen, which was delicious. It was perfectly creamy and the hop aromatics were full of pine and citrus. For a starter, I had the house pickled vegetables, which I probably wouldn’t order again. I wish I had just stuck with my gut and been a glutton going with clams or frites. For an entrée, I had the fried chicken, which was fantastic. It was perfectly coated and brined and piping hot. If I’m back in Detroit, which I hope will be soon, I will definitely return to GOLDCASHGOLD.

I dined at Gold Cash Gold for the first time last weekend. I enjoyed my experience, food was delicious, and the service was great! I hear they have great brunch as well, so I will have to give that a try next. This is a farm to table type restaurant, and with that comes a slightly higher price tag. The ambiance was really cool(I like a unique looking place) and there is a bar and a restaurant dining room area with about 10 tables. Their thing seems to be pickled vegetables, they were everywhere– from the food to the decorations on the walls. There was a short wait when I got there on a Friday evening(no reservations) so we got drinks and an app at the bar. Chef’s plate was good even though I didn’t know half of what I was eating and the craft cocktails were plentiful! Was told they are known for their fried chicken– so that is what I went with. Chicken was brined with pickle juice, so I guess you have to enjoy pickles(no friend of mine if you don’t) but it wasn’t overpowering. Came with cornbread that left much to be desired. Needed a better side like potatoes or something. Cornbread was bland, some sweet butter maybe? My friend got a pasta dish with rabbit, but not much rabbit included in the meal. Was a small portion but she said it was delicious. We ordered the pumpkin soup and mushrooms as another app/small plate and the pumpkin soup was soooooo good. Perfectly flavored, totally in season, and topped with a HOMEMADE marshmallow. Mushrooms were meant to be served room temp(which the waitress graciously warned us about when ordering) but that isn’t my thing. Menu rotates every so often with the season which is incentive to keep coming back. Their current menu features about 6 main dishes, so enough to chose from but not too much to feel crazy overwhelmed. Easy street parking in front of restaurant, otherwise there is a paid lot about a block down. No private lot.

Probably my favorite aspect of this place was the atmosphere. Can you beat the name«Gold Cash Gold?» The answer is no. This restaurant used to be a pawn shop, and elements of the pawn shop remain in the most cool way. I love the way they approached this & incorporated it into their branding /design /atmosphere. I really enjoyed being in this space. I really loved the appetizers we had. The pickled vegetables were just like my grandmother used to make, and I really enjoyed them. I also enjoyed the fried chicken skin salad, and the daily bread. Simply delicious and I highly recommend all these things. For my entrée I ordered fried chicken and it literally is the best fried chicken I have ever had. The pickle brine made all the difference, and the crispy/flaky skin was just so so good. You can’t go wrong with the fried chicken. My husband ordered the rabbit sausage and it was only okay(hence 4 vs. 5 stars). Honestly, just order the fried chicken. The desserts were delicious too. We had pumpkin pie, smores bar, and buttermilk pie with my favorite being the buttermilk pie. I would recommend all these, get whatever you are most in the mood for. Lastly, the staff was professional and really made all the difference for us. Our waiter was knowledgable and made great recommendations. We were able to meet the head chef and the end of the night as well, and he was a pretty cool dude.

Came to GCG for brunch with high expectations given some of the earlier reviews and food articles and left very underwhelmed. While the space was nicely designed with cool wood carved seats and the staff was extremely friendly, the food was very unimpressive. The grits and eggs were flavorless and unappetizing. The potato and bacon pieorgis sounded much better than they were. Portions were small for what you paid. Of the 3 of us, the only one who appreciated their meal was the person who ordered the burger. They’ve got an interesting menu and selection, but given our experience, I won’t be back to try other dishes.

It being Joe T’s birthday, four of us decided today was the day to try the highly-touted«Gold Cash Gold» on the corner of Michigan and Wabash in the Motor City. Located just down the block from Slow’s Bar BQ and across the street from the Mercury Burger Bar, G-C-G is well situated in an area of Detroit that is booming with the lunch and after-work crowds. With a name like«Gold Cash Gold», some in our party were skeptical at first — especially so when they saw the building’s façade which looks more like a pawn shop than a restaurant. G-C-G is in a century-old building that still sports a «Loans» sign hanging off the second floor of pale yellow bricks. Once inside, we were impressed with this very cool space with colorful stained glass, original hardwood floors and some nice tunes on the stereo. Our server Lauren welcomed us, highlighting some specials and explaining their«Lunch Board» concept which included a cup of their soup-of-the-day and a half of any sandwich on the menu. Sporting a classy red Budwiser Beer sweater; Lauren did a great job for us and definitely added some nice local color to our experience. Among our group of four, we ordered a couple of Lunch Boards including my delicious Egg Sandwich which included a sunny-side-up egg, bacon, a unique pickle juice mayo and spicy greens on grilled Sourdough… this ‘wich was great and gets my highest reco. It was complimented today with Gold’s own uniquely delicious Corn Chowder. Kathy M. ordered the Roasted Eggplant… which surprisingly came in a glass cup with peppers, greens and whole wheat pita(unique and tasty). Dave G. defiantly ordered the«Burger» which included 2 grass-fed patties, pimento cheese sauce, iceburg, thousand island, B&B pickles on a house pretzel bun. This lunch was Dave G’s treat for Joe’s birthday and Lauren came across with a unique slice of homemade pie gratis(complete with lit candle and 4 forks) recognizing the birthday boy in our group… a very classy touch by Lauren on behalf of G-C-G. Overall, great service, great eats and a totally enjoyable experience. A definite 4.5 today.

I’ve been wanting to come here ever since they opened, and we finally made it for a friend’s going away party. They had reserved most of the restaurant for brunch, and while the management didn’t require a deposit, they also wouldn’t split the bill, even by table, which I find to be ridiculous. The bill was over $ 600, so I think that’s bad customer service, but overall, our experience was a good one. Almost everyone ordered the chicken and waffles, made with their pickle brined fried chicken. Hubby said it was good, not great, and it was $ 20. What WAS amazing, and something I’d come back for, is the house smoked lox. Absolutely melt in your mouth delicious with this fantastic creamy yogurt sauce and house made pickled veg. Yum! The drinks were also great. I ordered a beer type cocktail and a couple bloody marys, and those bloody marys were the best I’ve ever had. Made with pickle juice and tons of spices, and served with pickled green beans. Perfect. The décor is absolutely beautiful, and there’s a great vibe in there. We’ll be back for at least drinks and snacks, for sure.

Gold Cash Gold is a great — and chic — addition to this area in Detroit. Named for the pawn shop that once inhabited this location, the atmosphere is fresh and updated. I went here with my mom on a trip back to my hometown and was delighted. We had made a reservation, and when we were a bit early, were invited to sit at the open space at the bar to get us settled. I started with one of their craft cocktails — The Monocle — which is unfortunately no longer on their menu. We ordered the burrata to start — which was creamy and came with a tangy pepper jam and some grilled bread. The portion size was perfect to share between two people. I also had the creamy potato soup — which was not quite as creamy as I would’ve hoped for, but still had a nice flavor and large chunks of bacon. I’m definitely looking forward to a return visit when I’m back in town to see what is new on their menu.

We came here over Woodward Dream Cruise weekend in a group of four to celebrate a friend’s birthday. We walked in shortly after opening and sat without any wait. Our server was enthusiastic and personable. We received excellent service and the bussing was amazing(nearly invisible). We ordered drinks. There was an interesting, although limited, beer selection. We ordered several dishes and shared all the way through. The best of the best highlight dishes that I would order again in the same sitting if I had room: Fried Chicken, Scallops, and others in my party would lobby for the tart. We started with Burrata. The Burrata was good and served with a grill charred bread and a pesto. Next, we enjoyed the octopus and cuttlefish. Served at the same time as the roasted beets dish and a tomato basil ricotta tart. The octopus and cuttlefish were good and displayed on a bed of sea island red peas and pickled rhubarb. The peas and rhubarb were delicious. In the other dishes, the roasted beets were beautifully played and also pickled and delicious. Followed by the pig’s ear and scallops and pork chop. The pig ear was tasty and the marmalade paired nicely with it. I may be unfair in this comment having only had pig ear this once — but the pig eat was very very tough/chewy. We probably only finished 20% of the dish as a table, it was too tough to eat more than one or two strips. The scallops were tender tasty and served with delicious corn relish. The pork chop was good with a pickled shiitake mushroom garnish. It had a nice tender texture with a caramelized crusty exterior. And then the fried chicken arrived. The fried chicken was pickle brined and cooked perfectly. It was tender and juicy and flavorful. The breading was light and delicious. If you visit Gold Cash Gold, make sure you order at least one serving of the fried chicken. We debated over the dessert menu and finally decided to order the deep fried pork ribs(after seeing how good they looked at a nearby table). And excellent dessert.

This is exactly what I’m talking about!!! The world of fearless cuisine comes alive and give real foodies the respect they truly deserve. The food group kids that loves to eat the better things in life. If you are finicky about what you eat, please save yourself the embarrassment and don’t show up. There’s a coney island down the street for you, there you might recognize some breaded chicken fingers and fried potato sticks. I bet they’ll even give you the option to dip it in ranch dressing. Doesn’t that sound satisfying? Anyways, now that’s been addressed, let’s get to the real skinny on things that is Gold Cash Gold. This establishment is one of the group of spots in Corktown that is helping press the fast forward button on its progress. The food served here is some next level stuff. This is real cuisine as far as I’m concerned. The culinary experience started with a nice bowl of clams, cooked in white wine, shallots, thick cut bacon and a bunch of other aromatics for the win. Then there’s the crispy pig ears, mmmmmmm! When you’re in here, I suggest you order one. If you’re already making faces, sorry about that, please remove yourself from the premises, I’m sure you’ll enjoy some nice fish sticks from a Gordons fisherman’s box. Then there’s the Octopus and Cuttlefish dish, it’s definitely amazing, all that good smoky flavor that just hits your tastebuds are out of this world. Whatever they’re doing here, they’re doing it out of love. Even the servers and the bartenders are on point because they know what real love is all about. Life is way too short to eat boring food. I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time. We were seated right away at around 6:45 which we were surprised by because usually when we try a new place in Detroit, we always have to wait. The staff and waiters were very nice and friendly but the food and drinks were average. A friend and I ordered drinks and a 2 meals. The drinks were ok. The Lawn Flamingo(Rosé sangria) had vodka and rose which gave it a strong and not so sweet taste which we were hoping for. I wish the description would have said that it has vodka in the drink as well as Rosé. We ended up getting different drinks because we didn’t like the sangria and we got the Bronze Metal and the Mink Stole. Those were good but nothing crazy. For dinner we ordered the low country cioppino and the pickle brine fried chicken. The cioppino was ok. It was not warm enough. It was just a little bit hotter than room temperature and it needed to have a little bit more of an acidic/lemony flavor. Also the shrimp in the cioppino didn’t seem fresh and seemed like it came out of a freezer shrimp bag you could get from a local grocery store. The Pickle brine fried chicken was average. I was craving cornbread but I did not like it. It wasn’t sweet cornbread which I was hoping for. The gravy was good but not warm and the chicken was very salty. You could taste the pickle flavor but it was just too salty for me. The price is average. Not expensive at all. The ambiance was was pretty cool and the story behind the restaurant is also cool and interesting. The restaurant used to be a pawn shop and the name of the cocktails are items you would find in a pawn shop. Overall the restaurant was average.
