5 stars is attributed to two things– their customer service and those sausage sandwiches! I’m actually hesitant to write about this hidden gem, because I don’t want it to blow up(at least not while I’m there). On one of my first trips to Eastern Market, my wife and I came upon this place. With a name like Eastern Market Seafood Company, we weren’t expecting to find what we did. Initially we looked at the store and it’s offerings– butcher shop offerings of different raw meats and seafood, random things like cans of tomato sauce and what not. Not really much to look at unless you’re looking for fresh meat or seafood. As we were walking out, we saw these sausage sandwiches that people were ordering. $ 5 for«the works» seemed like a nice little snack for us, so we decided to order 1. They had options for 3 or 5 different kinds of sausage. They listed 10 – 15 kinds of sausages, and rather than trying to figure out which ones we wanted to put in, the lady working made it really easy«do you want a little spice or no?» We said yes, and she basically went to work and constructed a sandwich for us. In addition to the 3 sausages, they put lettuce, tomatoes and a slice of cheese in a half a pita. Looked simple enough. Sometimes the best food is the simplest, and let me tell you, this sausage pita– RIDICULOUS. I’m probably doing people who have never been here a disservice by setting the bar very high, but this is honestly one of the items I ALWAYS get when I come to Eastern Market. The spice of the sausage is offset by the lettuce and tomato, and if you add a little hot mustard, yeah, that’s the ticket. OVERALL– I don’t know the name of the lady that makes these sandwiches, but I think I love you. A must have whenever I go, I encourage you to come check them out, and make sure you get the spice. They have a small number of tables and chairs directly across the counter if you’d like to sit and eat, or take it on the go as you continue to explore. CELEBRITYRATING– NPH

Had a hankering for one of them Old World Sausage Pita’s for breakfast(wound up eating two) … they really can’t be beat and with a bag of chips & a coke(combo), I think they cover all the major foods groups, ;). They got kielbasa, andouille(Cajun), Hungarian and a few more selections. I usually just get a «mix» and the staff hooks it up. It’s a rare visit to Eastern Market I won’t stop in for one of these sammich’s and the place really does add to your EM experience, IMO. The place may not look like much, but it is what it is and they are a convenient place to get stuff not readily available elsewhere, like Walker & Sons«Slap Ya Mama» and Zatarains brand Cajun spice mixes and such … best selection/variety I’ve seen anywhere in Metro Detroit. When I’m gonna’ do a summer boil, bbq or fish fry, this is one of my go-to spots when I need a large quantity of crawfish, box steaks, ribs, et … prices are very competitive, IMO. Two thumbs up!

The sausage seems to be good quality. I tasted a couple varieties in my friend’s sandwich and they were all really good. The store has batter mixes and other accessory items. As far as the seafood section, I am not impressed. Most of the items are frozen and prepackaged. I do not like the way the shrimp look. I’m used to going to Wyandotte for my seafood, but am not in that area anymore, so I bought some shrimp here(haven’t cooked them yet). They are farm grown in Indonesia and this just does not sit well with me. I am in Detroit, Eastern Market, America, and my shrimp were farm grown in Indonesia. Hmmm…

My family hails from Sicily, and we grew up eating all manor of seafood. So, it should be of little surprise that this store is the place for me. As soon as you walk into the store, look immediately to your right and there are the most delightful women making various sausage sandwiches for you to enjoy. Grab a brat, and then peruse the counters, which carry numerous amounts of water life. Are you a stranger to octopus? Well, get some here. Boil it and make a cold salad with some olive oil, spices and garlic. DONE. Or maybe you’d like to try something even more exotic. They have alligator tail meat, which is so f’in good it’s unreal. But don’t worry, because if you are more of a traditionalist, there is much for you to find here as well. There are beautiful sword fish filets, mahi-mahi, cod and salmon. If you’re looking to impress somebody, spend a little more cash on the king crab legs, lobster, or prawns. You want immediate seafood? How about some oysters good buddy? They don’t stop with just seafood. They sell tons of sausages, spices and other things as well. So, if you head to the Eastern Market, make this place one of your stops while you’re in the neighborhood.

My husband and I love their old world sandwiches. Every time we travel to Detroit, we always have to stop by to get the sandwiches. The meats are juicy and the combination of mustard and onions is just perfect.

–FORSAUSAGEPITAONLY– I’m torn. The Unilocaler in me says I have not fully experienced this establishment. The Old World Sausage Pita is something to enjoy before you die. I got the Super Works, which is 5 meats vs 3. Best $ 5.50 I ever spent. Simple mustard and lettuce on the bottom. The lady asked me if ‘spicy’ was ok, I said yet. GLORY! It had some real heat, and I was in love. Cajun andouille, hot & regular Italian assuage, bratwurst and something else. There was seafood here?

What’s better than a bunch of meat with some fixings stuffed into a pita wrap? Nothing really, I’d say! These Old World wraps were a great find in the outskirts of Eastern Market. I had a sandwich stuffed with kielbasa, andouille, and hot Italian sausage. The crunch and snap of the casing on the meats was a welcomed sound and the meats were so juicy. Add a bit of BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato, onions and cheese and you have yourself a quick lunch wrapped in a paper towel. Add in a drink and chips or a cookie and you’re shelling out less than 6 $ for a meal. Loved the sandwich and I hope to come back for more!

A great lunch stop for a three or five sausage pita sandwich cooked and made fresh. Your first smell when you walk through the door will be the delicious smells of sausage. Ask for the works — a meal in a half a pita. What a great idea to make the best sausage sandwich right out of a meat market. A Detroit classic. A full selection of meats and seafood is available. The current owner has been the proprietor for over 20 years.

We had time to kill before the lunch so we decided to check out Eastern Market before heading to lunch. Kind of dead on a weekday. We were planning on making lobster tail for dinner so we decided to check this place out. Décor is not really their thing but its well-lit and clean. They have so much seafood! And like every one mentioned they also sell sandwiches. We found their lobster tails and the nice thing is that they sell them in different sizes, 5oz, 8oz, etc. We got two 8 oz lobster tails for 20 bucks. We went to Joe’s Gourmet to buy some mussels to go with our lobster tail and found that their lobster tails were 20 a piece for an 8oz. WTF! That is crazy expensive. Sadly, one of our lobster tail meat was kind of mushy after cooking. The other tasted great… They sell scallops, all kinds of fish, and almost any other seafood you can imagine. Also sell meat and all kinds of seafood seasoning and whatnot.

The name is deceiving. It is a lot more than just a seafood place. They also have one of the largest varieties of sausage you will find anywhere. We bought a section of the mild Andouille Cajun and had it for dinner that night. It had just the right kick – more than you would expect. I think if we would have got the spicy option it may have been too much. They also serve some sandwiches for a quick lunch and have a bunch of special sauces to offer. We bought jars of both their tartar sauce and cocktail sauce and they are excellent. However they do have a great supply of many types of fish — all looking good and fresh. If you want shrimp this is the place all sizes and reasonable prices.

Great fish market. Always fresh and friendly. I come here to get walleye and lake perch. I love this place because it’s so clean and not fishy smelling. Great price for shrimp.

Wonderful selection of fresh seafood(also some meats.) The prices are great, the service is fast and efficient and dang if they don’t also sell these sausage sandwiches in pita at the other end of the counter which are sinfully good and also a steal for $ 3.50! This is one place I ALWAYS go when I am at Eastern Market.

This review is only for the sausage pita! I’m a total tourist from the south. I stumbled into this place just curious what this seafood market was all about. Lo and behold I saw that they serve this delicious pita sandwich — the work or super work. The work is 3 kinds of sausage for $ 3.50 and the super work is $ 5.50. I believe there’s at least 10 types of sausages available. You could choose specifically the kinds you want or have them just pick a good mix for you. Either way you can’t go wrong! A MUST try if you’re in the eastern market area.

I just ambled in to see what they had and I liked what I saw. They had all sorts of meats, in addition to seafood. I ended up going for some andouille sausage. I wish I had not eaten, so I could get a hot sandwich. Next time. ..

$ 3 three-sausage pita sandwich. so very good. Lots of frozen seafood. The line for the $ 3 three-sausage pita sandwich was curling out of the store today, which caught my eye, so I jumped in and discovered(very belatedly) this wonderful cheap sausage lunch. As soon as you walk in, the sandwich counter is right there. They’re cooking up maybe 15 varieties of sausage — bratwurst, weisswurst, knockwurst, all-beef kielbasa, italian mild and hot, cajun andouille, etc., etc. — you choose a combo of three and they slice and dice em for you, toss em in a half-pita pocket with lettuce tomato onion and lots of yellow mustard. soooo very delicious. $ 5 gets you a drink/bag of chips combo. The rest of the fish market here looked so-so. Most of it is frozen. There was some fresh salmon and shrimp that looked ok. They have XTRA-JUMBO shrimp here that’s the biggest shrimp i’ve seen in my life — almost the size of bananas… i’m wondering if that means they are more or less tasty than ordinary shrimp… who knows, but if you are looking for mutant-sized shrimp that you could carve and serve slices for a special occasion, here it is. They’ve also got some cured and smoked meats, and a lot of dry goods like BBQ sauces, condiments, pasta shells, canned beans, etc. They have bulk-sized canisters of various oils(like peanut oil) if you’re frying a lot in your house… might save you a few bucks. I’m only recommending the sandwich. get one.

I am ONLY reviewing the three-sausage pita. We get the spicy version every time. Very, very good. I’ve never purchased their seafood but would probably go elsewhere.

My cohorts in culinary excellence and I ventured forth to Eastern Market Seafood Co. today during lunch break to gather an ocean’s bounty of ingredients for various projects. What more reasonable location to find fresh shellfish and seafood than the place listed in the Eastern Market directory as a wholesaler of such items, right? WRONG. This place should be called«Mushmouth Seafood» Or «Seafood R Us». A wholesaler of fresh items they definitely are not. «Are these mussels/crawdads/etc raw or cooked?», I asked. «definitely raw/fresh», the monger replied. And so it went — I made my purchase of a carton of various fish, shellfish and crustaceans, expected that the fish monger would have the basic decency to be honest. When I unpacked everything at home the various items thawed from their ice laden bags and packages, the awful truth set in: with the exception of 3 items, the sea creatures were neither fresh nor raw, but pre-cooked then repacked and frozen to look otherwise. I’m horribly disappointed. rather angry, really. I will not be setting foot in this joint ever again. Their quick $ 70 sale today has lost them thousands of dollars I’ll be spending elsewhere in the future. If there was a negative star integer, I would assign it. minus five stars. Dishonest jerks. Stay away. You’re better off buying seafood from meijer or costco.

I stopped in to this old favorite while at the market on Saturday. I never knew it’s name and laughed because I’ve only ever gotten a sausage sandwich here. I used to come down on Saturday on lunch break at CCS. There’s only one thing to get: a sausage sandwich. The good news is that you pick 3 of many available sausages. They cut them up into pieces and put them in a half(I think) a pita; you can have mustard and they give you a piece of paper towel for a napkin. You, in turn, give them $ 3. That is not a typo — $ 3 for more sausage than you need to eat in one sitting. I’d actually pay them $ 3.25 if they’d make napkins more accessible. You can sit at the wooden benches up front. The sausages are good and I’m sure I’ve had every type. I’m pretty sure I don’t want to see them being made. They do sell seafood — much of it frozen. They have cold water lobster tails and alligator. I’ve never tried any of the non-sausage items.
