Detroit Parent Network

I am not sure about the services here because I have called 5 times in a row. Once i was connected to an extension that had a full mailbox. Next I called back and someone picked up the phone, did not answer, then hung up. The following three calls were all met with voicemail. Sad…

As a social worker I have referred several families here but only one ended up joining. They have tons of classes, activities and supports by parents, for parents. For my client, this really made a difference since she had been feeling very isolated, after all, living in a city can be very difficult. Her favorite activity was the weekly work out class where she could get some exercise and make friends. They seem to have free child are for all their events. Membership is $ 5 (per year?) and all the members volunteer at events regularly. The onetime I stopped by for a schedule of activities they were super friendly.

One place in the city where a parent, child, community partner, or resident can feel at home. It reminds me of the Cheers them song lyrics «where everybody knows your name». DPN is a place where you can go for resources, information on parenting, community activities, workshops, and even weekly exercise classes with FREE childcare. It is a membership organization where each member is a part of a bigger movement.
Membership costs $ 5 plus 5 volunteer hours. This is the only place you can go where $ 5 goes a long way. Each month they have a member social where members, families and children get together for dinner, dance lessons, board games, speakers and other fellowship activities. I like the Detroit Parent Network because the staff and members treat you like family. It may be chaotic at times, but no other place gives so much back to membership. There are monthly support groups for various groups such as: grandparents raising grandparents, men’s groups, and even a support groups for those who lost a loved one.
Each summer they have a family fun day which includes fitness classes, old school outdoor games, bake off’s and music. They even have raffles for gas cards, gift certificates, and other things. I even won a netbook at one of the Annual Breakfast’s a couple years back. It is definitely worth checking out as a good organization for parents and those looking to become leaders in the local schools and community.
