Skywalk Barbering

I’ll never go here again. I asked for a slicked back undercut and what I get is him chopping off all my hair. He says this is what I would do. I don’t want what you would do. This is what I asked for and he gave me a military buzz cut. The two cuts aren’t even close.

I have been getting my hair cut here for 4 years and wouldn’t go anywhere else. Jake is the only one that I’ve ever gone to, but Noi and himself are both great at what they do. The shop is an old school place and the owner runs it that way. They take walk-​ins and cash only, although if you call in advance, they are always happy to tell you how busy they are and how long the wait would be. If you want to make a reservation and pay with a card, go to the salon with your girlfriend. They provide great customer service and will make you feel like you’re just hanging out with the guys. The patrons of the shop come from all walks of life and can always be counted on for good conversation and great stories. I’f you’re easily offended or are weak when it comes to an opposing opinion, spare everyone else in the shop and go to the salon with your girlfriend.

I wish I could rate this place at no stars. The owner of this place (Jake) has a huge chip on his shoulder that seems to stem from his other employees getting business. The first time I came in a few months ago, I stood around and waited for someone to open the shop 45 minutes late. Apparently someone else was supposed to open for the day but didn’t show up. I got the impression that’s how the whole business is run. Noi cut my hair and I liked how he did it, so a few weeks later I called to set up an appointment with Noi and got attitude from Jake for wanting someone else to cut my hair. He begrudgingly told me Noi’s schedule but when I arrived he wasn’t in so I went ahead and had Jake do it. Normally my wife cuts my hair but she wanted me to try a new style and she really like how Noi did it originally. When Jake cut my hair, first of all he said something really racist that pissed me off, then commented about how the hairstyle my wife wanted was a trendy hairstyle that wasn’t «in» anymore (hey if she thinks I look hot that’s all I care about) and then top it all off by criticizing all other staff behind their backs. Look — I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. He could have been having a bad day. I never, ever, give people bad reviews — — but I can’t condone this behavior or advise anyone else to go participate in it. I hope this review helps Jake figure his life out because I don’t want his business to fail. It could be such a great place.

Great barbers! Aelsin was my barber today, and took his time to make sure I have a perfect cut. I’ll definitely be back. BTW, they don’t take appointments, walk-​in only.

Went to Skywalk last week for a fresh birthday cut. It was the first time in 4 years that I have had someone else cut my hair. Wanted to try something new. They did an amazing job and made me feel comfortable. The atmosphere is really cool and the barbers are friendly. CASH ONLY, which makes it feel even more legit. I will definitely be driving down from Ames again!

had to get a quick haircut before a wedding and the guy who cut my hair (I want to say Paul… I suck) stayed late and gave me a great haircut.

This Barber Shop is a fantastic hidden gem. Walked right in and was able to get a haircut immediately. Paul is a top notch barber. I wasn’t really sure what style I wanted with an in-​between, growing out hair phase. He made some suggestions and I left the rest up to him. Couldn’t be happier with the results and it was just like hanging out with the boys. I would highly recommend this barber shop and especially Paul!

Giving this place 5 stars because of their new barber Paul. I’ve been here before and the cut was ok, but Paul is excellent. Best cut I’ve had in years. I’ll be back!

Just an update… haircuts are $ 17 and a third barber is available. They also sell pomades and other hair products for men. Love this gem in downtown Des Moines!
If they are slow, they may close early (don’t believe they have posted hours… but usually open M-​F until 6ish). Call ahead if it’s later in the afternoon. I usually text Dewey when I need an appointment and usually accommodated the same day.

I usually get my hair cut at home by the wife, but I occasionally am in a pinch or a time crunch for a cut! I have gone to Skywalk Barbering, (a block from my apt, in the sky walk) a couple times!
It’s looks like an old school barber shop in someone’s living room! Tv’s on, magazines out, Deer head’s on the wall! This is like a boys club! I have never seen a women getting a cut here, but I’m sure there has been! Cut’s are 15 bucks even and they don’t take to long! Small talk is minimal and friendly and you get a good cut! Not much more to say! It’s a homey, clean place, where you can get a fast hair cut at a decent price.

Great place for a guy to get a good cut at a fair price. Cool environment and you won’t be rushed out the door like a Sports Clips or Cost Cutters. Been going here for years.

Hours on Unilocal say open until 8, but I got turned away at 6:30 as being «too late.» I’m bald on top, so a quick run with the clippers in 10 minutes was too much? I’ll find somewhere else.

I was downtown and needed a cut and this place popped up on Unilocal,so I gave it a shot. I’m glad I did; I got a great haircut for an excellent price. Jacob cut my hair, and he suggested a slightly different look than the cut that I usually get at standard cheap barbershops. It was a great suggestion, and my hair looks better than it would have otherwise. The cost was only $ 15, a very reasonable price. It is cash-​only, but there is a nearby ATM in the Capital Square Building. There is on-​street parking all around and a couple different nearby garages.

Quick haircut. The barber didn’t listen to what I wanted and I left with something I didn’t like. I wouldn’t recommend unless you want a very basic cut.

Old-​school joint with new-​school barbers. Darts and Playboy while you wait. Good haircut, too — only $ 15.
