Fongs lives up to the hype. Cool kitschy atmosphere. Here on a Friday night and packed with hipsters. Hostess was so friendly. It is bitter cold and our first table was by the door. She quickly moved us to the table by the bathroom. It was warm and great people watching. I did say kitschy. Sat at the bar waiting for our table. My husband had the Painkiller– delic! I had the Mango Cooler. Just ok and bartender was not friendly at all. Seemed angry we weren’t go into eat at the bar. We ordered 3 different 10 inch pizzas– crab Rangoon, Mongolian beef, Thai chicken. All very good. Waiter was just awesome! Took great care of us. Would recommend and come again.

Went here for the first time last month. We tried the crab rangoon pizza & raspberry cheesecake egg rolls for dessert. We went here on a Sunday afternoon so it wasn’t busy at all. Our sever was nice & prompt. I wasn’t really amazed with the crab rangoon pizza, Johnny’s Hall of Fame has a pizza that is similar called the sweet chili & cream cheese chicken and I think it is way better.

Chinese food joint turned pizza shop. So what do you do with the décor? Make it a Chinese food themed pizza shop of course. Great and unique pizza menu. Crab Rangoon pizza Moo shu pork pizza. And a variety more. Full bar and stiff drinks. This place gets crowded on weekends and you likely will have a wait.

The pizza was ok. The service can only be described as uninspired. My sister lives in Des Moines and this place is supposed to be Awsome. I live in Minneapolis where we have Luce, Red Savoy and Broadway all of whom put out better pizza. It’s really just ok:

3.5, bumped to 4 because the service was spectacular! The server was happy and attentive. Expect a wait. This place is popular. A mix of Asian and pizza seemed an unlikely combo… Downright weird. Mongolian Beef Pizza or Crab Rangoon Pizza?! Somehow, they make it work! The menu is just right, not too extensive, just enough to be doable for the kitchen on a crazy night like a Friday. We got Crab Rangoon appetizer, Sriracha Chicken balls appetizer, Thai Peanut Sticks, kids Mac n cheese, Kung Pao Pizza, Crab Rangoon Pizza, Loaded Baked Potato Pizza. We shared. Crab Rangoon, app and pizza– actually, less crabby and«rangoony» than we expected. It was good, with the drizzle of sweet and sour sauce and crunchy wonton bits on top. It just didn’t remind us of Crab Rangoon. Sriracha balls– good with a little spice. Thai Peanut Sticks– really really good! If you like peanut butter, this is a winner! Mac n cheese– really good. Kung Pao Pizza– I did not like it at all, not one bit. My DH liked it a lot. It tasted funky to me, hard to explain. He thought it great. Loaded Baked Potato Pizza– very good, tasted like a baked potato spread on a pizza crust. You could taste the starchy mashed potato, with cheese, bacon bits, onions and fresh sour cream. I liked this one. If we lived in Des Moines, we would go back only occasionally. Try it if you’re from out of town.

Fong’s Pizza is quite an interesting place. It is located in a small spot on the edge of Des Moines’ bar district. I was informed by my daughter’s Resident Assistant that Fong’s Pizza is a «must try». My wife and I ate the Crab Rangoon pizza. It was quite interesting to see Chinese food as a pizza topping, and I must say, it did not disappoint. While I wouldn’t say that the pizza was«the best of the best», it was a pleasant, lively spot with unique fare. I would like to try more of their pizza the next time I come to visit my daughter.

First time here and heard nothing but good things. Came in and sat right down. Staff was friendly. Pizza selection all have an Asian theme to them was was obvious based on the name of the place haha. I ordered the Crab Ragoon Pizza and it was pretty relish. I guess this is their #1 ordered pizza and I can see why. Think of a crab Ragoon but on a pizza and viola… heaven. A must try for Des Moines!!!

One of the best pizza places anywhere. Try something unique that you haven’t seen anywhere before. The uniqueness of this pizza joint is what makes it stand out. Late night slices are a great choice as well.

The original Fongs… small, cramped and hot. Because of the atmosphere we have not returned. I love that they think outside of the box with their food and drinks. Food is decent but not affordable for the average Joe. Drinks are interesting, mostly the glasses they are in. So may people love this place and I am glad they are doing well. I have heard good things about the new shop in Atown so will have to venture there sometime.

Decided to get a couple pizzas from Fong’s for dinner and it didn’t disappoint. I work in downtown so I placed the order when I logged off work and by the time I got to Fong’s, the pizzas were ready. I ordered their Crab Rangoon and the 4th Street Special pizzas. The Crab Rangoon is always a good choice. It was sweet, savory, salty and full of goodness. The 4th Street Special is like their supreme style pizza so it had pepperoni, sausage, onion, green peppers, mushrooms, and black olives. This pizza tasted very good as well. The 4th Street Special complimented the Crab Rangoon pizza quite well, since it was a completely different pizza. The pizzas come in either 10″ or 16″. We ordered both pizzas in the 10″ size, since the pizzas are a bit pricey. The total came to be almost $ 29 with tax for the 2 pizzas. It would have been over $ 40 if we would have ordered the 16″ size. I easily could have eaten the entire 10″ Crab Rangoon pizza by myself :) Besides the pizzas being pricey, I always enjoy the food at Fong’s. They also have fun drinks on the menu, which involves fighter pilot helmets, Gluten Free option is also available, and it’s just a fun place to be at with friends.

This place can get very busy and It’s a little on the small size for comfort. The pizza makes up for it in my opinion, I love all the fancy spins they put on top of a pizza it keeps it interesting and when you are done you don’t feel like you had a typical pizza night. Prices fit in for downtown, Same with the drinks.

LOVETHISPLACE! Ok, Fong’s is not your«let’s order a quick pizza for a movie night» restaurant, but is such a cool, interesting place to go with friends. It is surrounded by fun shops downtown, which is good because the wait is almost always 15 – 30 minutes depending on when you arrive. The restaurant is small and you need to arrive early if you have a lot of people. Not ideal for groups of 7 or more. There is parking nearby, but the lot associated with the restaurants is $ 5. We ordered cheeseburger egg rolls and Peanut Butter Pad Thai flatbread appetizers. I was not a fan of the cheeseburger egg rolls at all– sounds gross and is gross-but the PB Tai cracker was not bad for a one timer. It is super peanut buttery and I probably would not order it again. For the main event: the famous Crab Rangoon Pizza. It was amazing and so interesting. It has the cracker crust with the crushed wontons in too and yummmm. Fong’s is not the place for traditional pizza– it is known for specialty pizza– and the Crab Rangoon is the choice to not pass up.

On our way back from a cross-country road trip we decided to stop in Des Moines for some zzzz’s. It was late and this was one of the restaurants which were still open. so off to get some Chinese pizza we went. That’s right, I said Chinese pizza. We started with just regular egg rolls which were sooo good. My husband generally loves egg rolls but I can take or leave them as I think they’re boring. These though, they were actually my favorite thing of the evening. Get the egg rolls! Then I had to try the crab rangoon pizza because I figured might as well go all out. Good call, as it was very good. My man went with kung pao pizza which was a little spiced and he liked it alot. The reason they can pull these combinations off is because there is no tomato sauce or cheese, and the crust is like a cracker. So the crust is not doughy, it’s just a crispy vessel to hold the toppings. So really, it’s not as weird as it sounds but it’s definitely tasty and worth a visit.

The pizza is great and very original. The Rockin’ Taco is my favorite. The location offers very limited seating, so sometimes going on a Friday or Saturday, you will have to wait for a long time for a seat. Generally good service. This was a long time ago, but a couple years ago, I was waiting to use the men’s room(it’s a one person bathroom), the guy who was in the mens room came out without washing his hands and it was an employee, I suspected a cook. So I was grossed out by that. But again, that happened a couple years ago. They’ve got a really interesting drink menu and really good beer selection.

Confucius say: Chinese pizza in Iowa, makes more sense than bull in china shop. This is unique pizza that is a must if your visiting Des Moines. It’s not what your thinking. The flavors at play are well thought out and are like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Bravo. I want to explore more of the menu next time. The waiter was pleasant and overall a great experience. Would return.

Driving from Chicago to Colorado and felt we had to stop at Fongs. Divey atmosphere but so much cool stuff to look at on walls kept me distracted the whole time I was there. We ordered the taco and crab Rangoon pizzas and they were both great. Crust was cracker like which worked with both taco and crab Rangoon. The toppings were great and made both pizzas feel authentic to there original form but also great pizza, definitely a unique but tasty experience.

We went there a couple years ago, but i didn’t write a review. This is for last week’s visit. It was 4:30 in the afternoon and the place was almost full. We ordered a large crab ragoon pizza. It was $ 20. Wow. It was thin, very thin. It’s pretty much crust, cream cheese and fried wonton. you can get 2 pizzas from Casey’s for $ 20. I repeat: there’s NOMEAT on the pizza. i think if you order an alcoholic drink from 2 to 6 Monday to Friday, you get a slice of pizza. I wish the waitress would tell us, without being asked about it. The Ankeny location is going to be open on May 8th, just in case you’re wondering. I will not be coming for quite some time, unless they send me half off coupons. ha :))

First time for coming to Fong’s and I must say it is definitely worth all of the hype!!! Love the eclectic feel of the place with the Asian tiki bar vibe. Staff is super friendly!!! Warning there is hardly any seating!!! Same goes for parking. Not much of that either!!! But so worth it!!! Egg rolls are super crisp and flavorful!!! Crabrangoon pizza is recommended. So strange it’s really good! Who would have thought of that combo. The sauce has a nice spicy zip to it! Overall impressed and I can’t wait for their second location to open !!!
