Willie is the only man I trust to give me the straight info on current production tubes… both from a construction quality standpoint as well as for tonal characteristics. Yes, NOS is cool and he can help you out in that regard as well, but for the typical working musician whose listeners can’t necessarily hear the difference between different brands of batteries or pick colors(EJ reference) having a dependable source for the right production tubes for my needs is paramount. If I happened to catch him at a busy time, Wille has many times called me back on his dime and took as much time as needed to insure I was getting what I needed at the right price. A big big plus is that he burns in and then tests every tube that he sells, not just random tests within a certain lot. This reduces early failure rate to almost zero. As far as the person complaining that he had their amp a long time… that’s pretty much par for the course when you choose an in-demand tech with a stellar reputation.(try getting a trigger job done really quick from some of the top shelf pistolsmiths… you might wait years) Also, if you are a real gigging musician, I’m guessing you would get moved ahead in the line compared to a bedroom jammer. I have never needed to send Willie an amp for service(I do my own for the most part) but I would not hesitate to do so. Finally, there are many in the business that jump at the chance to slam Lord Valve because he is not on the«correct» side of the political fence, but that simply shows the hypocrisy from the side that claims to stand for tolerance.

Willie recapped my silverface twin while I sat there and watched. We were good friends at the time, as I lived a few miles from him in Denver. The amp sounded great when he was done. This was in 1980. I used to go to Willies house and play scrabble with him. He’s a master! learned a new word — «gleet». Google it. :-) To address the fact that another person who posted above has been waiting 6 months for his amp — have you ever considered that maybe he’s THAT busy? Or maybe instead of whining about it here, you could simply give the man a call and ask him about it.

Fat Willie«Lord Valve» Whittaker is a tube amp genius. He has repaired my ’66 Fender Deluxe Reverb amp(Willie said it’s the best DR he’s ever heard, and he’s seen a few) and completely re-wired my ’67 Fender Bassman head after the previous owner screwed it all up. Willie has my ’71 Fender Vibrolux Reverb now, in for repair and new tubes. Willie cuts no corners — he uses the best parts for your desired tone. I’ve utilized tube amp services from California to Texas to Colorado, and Willie is the BEST, the real deal. Like any highly-regarded service provider, he’s busy — so it may take a few weeks for Willie to fit in your job. He puts up with zero BS and fixes it right.
