Yep. Gotta love a good small business. Fairfax hardware is probably one tenth the size of a small Home Depot, but somehow I always seem to find exactly what I need. Additionally, unlike the Home Depot, I never find myself in there wandering around like an idiot while employees give me a vacant look, then just keep on cruisin’ with out a inkling of desire to assist. Nope, the staff at Fairfax are knowledgeable, friendly, and quick to lend a hand.

My favorite hardware store in Park Hill. The number one reason why is EVERY time I’ve walked in, there is a very helpful middle-aged man ready to relieve me of all my hardware woes and make my life infinitely better. Whether it’s to find a screw, a new hose spigot, organic compost, paint, or have a new key made, they’ll get you in and out in a hurry. Although True Value down the street has a larger selection, I turn to Fairfax because of the time it saves me time. I’ve slowly gotten to know the store and where things are because 99% of the time I’m escorted to what I need. I’ve never spent more than 15 minutes in the store(well, one day, I spent an hour, but it was cumulative over 5 trips). I love supporting my local stores instead of the mega-centers, as well. The thing is, if they don’t have it here, I can always try my luck meandering around True Value a few blocks up Colfax.

I called the store to check fuel can supply and the woman that answered was warm and friendly. I usually go to the Tru Value East of this location but since she was so nice I decided to give Fairfax a try. MISTAKE. I entered the store with my 78 year old Mom and was greeted by the cashier with a stony stare. Undeterred I smiled at her and she didn’t even respond. I told her I was looking for gas cans and she briskly informed me «in garden». On the way we encountered 2 more employees and 2 customers. The customers were friendly(showing we weren’t scary freaks to be gawked at) but again the employees just glared at us. We picked up the items we needed and proceeded to checkout. Without a single word the cashier rung us up, took my credit card then just pointed at the signature pad! While we were there she did answer the phone and sure enough she was the same friendly person I had spoken to! I felt like I paid $ 29 for a slap in the face. I will never go back to that store.

There is something really comforting about walking into an Ace Hardware. There is always that really helpful guy right inside the door who knows were everything is, and I always feel like he’d follow me home and make the repair if I was really in a bind… Okay, maybe that’s going too far, but these guys always make me think of my dad in the way that he’s super helpful and willing to help with all kinds of projects. We stopped at Ace today to buy a few things and ended up buying a few more. I have never been disappointed at an Ace — I feel like I always find what I need and I feel good about buying it from somewhere other than Home Depot! We have moved to Park Hill within the past year and we’ll frequent this store often in the coming years!

I love this place because they have anything I ever have needed for and repair! I like that the people are friendly and will help me! It is nice that this place is still around and did not get eaten by Walmart(GRRRR) or Home Depot. I am keep this short and simple… thank you old faithful!

Skip Home Depot, especially if you own an older home. Here you will find the right thingamajig that fixes whatever is wrong with your house. Sometimes Home Depot only has new stuff. Fairfax has the hardware that has the stuff that fits the kind of things older houses are equipped with. There are usually people around who can help you. And it’s not a chain store!

This is Fairfax Hardware and it is independently owned. Whatever, Ace or not, this is a hardware store. This is where the husband and I come when the toilet overflows, the fuse blows, and for all the other things you need when you own a house. AND they keep hardware stuff for the older homes in Park Hill; trust me this is very important as I have learned over the years. They have a great new paint center with lots of color samples and decorating brochures which I can easily entertain myself with while the husband looks for screws. They have a garden center, a snack center, a place to pay your utility bills, and of course, the key making machine. And the new owner and his wife are there at all time; they are trying their best to keep this THE neighborhood hardware store.

This store is actually no longer an Ace store, and is now independently owned Fairfax Hardware. I can only hope that they are still in transition because since being under new ownership the selection is less, and there’s fewer employees working at any given time, which means less help with your mushrooming projects. The staff that is there CAN be exceptionally wonderfully helpful. Today a nice man helped me with some screwing questions. You know, how long a screw should be and how many I needed and things. Looks like they still carry sod on the weekends in the summer. Keep it in mind if you need insta-lawn before the in-laws show up for your 4th of July BBQ but you don’t want to drive all the way to the sod farms to get some. Some sod, I mean. I don’t mean, you know, «get some.» Geez, you people, your minds are in the gutter. I bet you were thinking something naughty about the screws, too. Shame on you.
