So I tried Bixo opening weekend at Avanti. The people were nice, but I thought the food was meh. I got the huitlacoche ravioli. It was really small and expensive and it was cold like they hadn’t finished cooking it. I love huitlacoche so was all over this, but I really wish I had just gone to Quiero Arepas. However, I might be willing to go back and try it again as opening weekends are almost never good.

I finally had the opportunity to visit Avanti, and Bixo Bites was at the top of my list of restaurants to try. I had been following them on Instagram for some time, and their presentation and unique flavors had piqued my interest. I was trying to save enough room to sample a few spots, so I only got the tuna tartare tostada(difficult decision to make, I might add), and it exceeded my expectations. Watching them put the meals together carefully and deliberately was really cool, and the flavor for such a simple meal was out of this world. My friend got the squid ink risotto, so I got to try that as well, and it was delicious! Definitely worth hitting up Avanti to try their dishes!

Not a huge fan of Avanti, but am a huge fan of this place. The food here is excellent.

My girlfriend and I were visiting from California and decided to get a bite from the different places at Avanti. We got a particularly pleasant experience at Bixo! Chef Marco is one hell of an interesting guy. While asking him about the menu, I found out he spent several years doing his culinary school in France and Spain and speaks French, English, Spanish and Catalan! I’m a French native speaker and so we carried on a conversation in French where I got to hear about his time in Europe. About the food? The plates are tapas like dishes which give you the option to try different dishes before getting full. For gourmet food, this was a good deal for us and we wanted to try them all. We ordered the Short rib, the Paella, the Albacore, the Seared Watermelon and some tacos(which I think were temporary on the menu). I had high expectation from someone who did his culinary studies in France and Spain so I wanted to try his dishes. Boy, did he deliver!!! Looking at the plate, you know he gave some attention to the presentation. The Seared Watermelon will confuse your palate for a second as you try to figure out what is it that you’re tasting. This is an out of the ordinary dish and you’ll know it the second you bite it. The Albacore and the Paella also were delicious. My favorites were the shrimp tacos and the short rib. Both of them were EXTREMELY flavorful(flavor is a big thing in my book) and the rib was so tender it was unbelievable. I have been to many food places shown on the food network channels and travel channels. Hands down, the best tacos and short rib I have had, came from Bixo. This place is worth giving a try. We are definitely stopping by again next time we are in town.

Just finished my review on Avanti, and I thought I would review this as well, being the best place in there(imho). I mean there’s some pretty good pizza, tortas, arepas and shawarmas if your in the mood for that, but if you really want to feel the upscale part of the concept, try this one instead. We ordered the short rib, the paella, the mussels and the seared watermelon. I mentioned this one specially in my other review because it’s the one that blew my mind. However, the short rib was so good, my wife barely let me touch it! Just to give you an idea of the creativity this guy has, I copied the ingredients of the SWM and the rib for my review: Seared watermelon, feta frost, basil tabbouleh, pine nut sand & kalamata pesto Who would have thought, right? You should really try it if you’re a foodie and want something completely different and great tasting. Then follow with the short rib and thank me later. It has: Angus short rib braised in pasilla chile, celery root purée, citrus & lavender gremolata. I thought the pasilla chile was probably going to dominate too much, but that celery root purée really tastes amazing in this dish. What a composition. Paella and mussels were great too, you can tell the broth they’re made with is the real seafood deal. Top all of this off with your favorite wine or beer, and it just became your best culinary experience of the month without spending 100’s.

I had the honor of tasting every single plate during the testing period and every single one is wow, delicious! I was very surprised, not only at the talent, creativity, and the amount of effort behind those plates, but at the mix of flavors, definitely superb! It’s a mix of mediterranean(french, spanish, italian) with mexican influences, very interesting! Definitely worth it and if you are a «foody» you’ll definitely enjoy it! Just keep in mind these are tapas style plates meant for sharing and tasting amazing flavors.
