It’s like heaven, except all the clouds are covered in inch long needle-like spines. Simply put, this place has the single most impressive collection of cactii and succulents in the entire central Texas area. Primarily a wholesale nursery, Desert to tropics also sells to the general public… and they have a *phenomenal* collection. More variety than any 5 retail places put together. If you are considering a large xeric bed, come out here check out the *freaking enormous* landscape cactii and succulents… i bought a 4 foot tall Argentinian Saguaro that is truly stunning. Also, if you’re into container gardening, they have hundreds of varieties of tropical cactus and succulents as well. The owners are immensely knowledgeable and very helpful… and have deep roots(hyuk!) in south austin. You will seriously be dumbfounded by the size of this place… as well as the massive collection and jaw dropping variety. A bit off the beaten path, but its a beautiful drive — and well worth the trek. Look people: we live in Texas, and it is fraking hot and dry a large chunk of the year… so you need to landscape with this in mind. Xerics are some of the most beautiful plants to incorporate in your landscape, and have tremendous architectural interest year round. Get your protective gloves, your shovel, and your band-aids… and plant some cactus!
