Can’t recommend. Ordered two tacos, since others reviewers had stated they very good, also ordered a side of guacamole. Meat tasted/looked highly processed. Will not likely stop back, only item on my table worth mentioning was the salsa that was served when seated. Not good enough to make into a meal on its own, but a decent starter.

It is hard to find decent Mexican food in the area. This place is so good that I will likely make the hour drive back again soon!

The food was great and margaritas were awesome. The place is open on Sunday’s which is a bonus in Decorah!

Place was packed on a Sunday night, but we didn’t have to wait as we got there early. Not sure if it was because of the crowd, or because it was hot outside and we ate out there, but food didn’t really taste like much. Had grilled chicken, not much flavor. Tried my kids’ taco after she was done, same there too.

Had lunch there today with my advisor from Luther College. Dr Pillsbury is my advisor took me there for lunch I had the food is always warm served in hot plate delicious the staff is always in uniform I served 35 years and hospitality and you should always you should know something about a restaurant when you eat there if you go early enough you’ll be sure to have good parking like I did this morning we ate at 1130 it wasn’t cramped the food is always always always and the drinks if you’re going to have a little nosh before dinner you can do that there also because their license for liquor. If you go out to eat there on Saturday during the season you know to hit a couple garage sales and you can get all the good sales without having to get up so early to drive around town and Decorah to find them tell us all day this is Val the older senior Luther telling you to have a safe weekend bye

Good Mexican food — definitely better than what you’d expect to find in a small Iowa town.

I live to eat at Don Jose’s Mexican Restaurant! A Decorah favorite, they serve the best Mexican food and drinks around with friendly and fast service. They get busy on peak days and during peak hours, so be prepared to wait and potentially stand if the waiting bench is full. Their salsa is the best I have had at any Mexican restaurant(and I’ve been to a lot) and the food is high quality and truly delicious. They are also happy to customize any order and add/remove ingredients to your exact liking. I recommend their quesadillas and the hot cheese dip to eat with your chips.

Best place in town to get tacos and margaritas! The owners are so sweet and do really great job running the place! The outdoor patio is beautiful in the summer!

Salsa was good. Food average but not bad. Margarita could have used some tequila in it. Overall not a bad place but far from best I’ve had.

Folks friendly and fast. Loved the sopa de camerones, with fresh avocado. Very like the soup I’ve had in the Yucatan over the years. A treasure of Decorah!

Best Mexican food in the Midwest. I had 30 minutes asked if that was reasonable and they said they would make it work. They did and delivered some steak fajitas that were to die for. Only complaint is I wanted more steak. Worth coming to Iowa just for this place

Stopped in for a late lunch on a trout fishing trip to NE Iowa. Once again great service and great food. I had the number 41. It was great and I love spicy food but I met my match with this one. The waiter said they made a hotter version. I don’t think I could have eaten that. It had fantastic flavor though. Can’t wait until my next fishing trip and lunch at Don Jose’s.

Great service! We usually don’t wait long for our meals to arrive. I really enjoy the enchiladas verdes with tomatillo sauce, the carne asada, and the mole. The only thing I don’t care for is the relleno; very eggy and not quite done the whole way through. The restaurant is extremely clean, including the bathrooms. A great place to grab a bite while in Decorah.

For being in NE Iowa, one of the whitest places I have ever been, my expectations were extremely low. But this place was great, perfect salsa, fresh ingredients and great carne asada in my burrito. Great price as well. I will be coming here again on my trip. It was a taste of home for this San Diego grown dude.

Excellent authentic food, excellent service, huge menu, and extremely affordable. When I’m in the area, this is my go-to restaurant.

Don Jose’s rates ‘awesome’ with me. Impressed with the Mariscos for ‘land-locked’ Iowa… definitely satisfied my need for Mexican food away from home! Will be back! Salsa, spicy. Service, very attentive. Guac, tasty. Frijoles y Arroz, great combination.

Very good food. I had fajitas which were tasty. The serving was quite large though a higher than average percentage of the stir fried fare was onions. They were non quite as well done as I prefer. The sauce used for the fajitas was pretty good though I was puzzled to taste a bit of something like cinnamon. The sauce was good — definitely homemade — but not quite something I would call a favorite. That sort of cinnamonish flavor was a little distracting. The beans and rice were okay. It’s kind of hard for those sides to leap out at a person. I liked the salsa which was just a little on the thin side. It had a good flavor and plenty of kick to it. Good stuff. The service was speedy and friendly. It was a very good experience overall. I would recommend this restaurant and, when in town, will return. I’m a fan.

Great salsa, nice and spicy, just the way I like it! Also I had the best spinach enchilada ever!
