Taste of Jamaica is a small restaurant located in a small shopping center near a gas station. When we entered, there wasn’t anyone sitting/eating there, but I’m guessing it’s more of a take-out spot, which is what we ended up doing. We shared a large portion of stewed chicken. It came with rice, cabbage, and small pieces of plantains. I love plantains but we were barely given any so that sucked. But the stewed chicken, with the sauce poured all over the rice was divine. The boy and I shared it and we were both full. Price is not bad. We also ordered a can of coconut juice(which was sweeter than I had anticipated, so heads up) and it came out to be around $ 10. Service could be improved.

This place is home cooked goodness I grew up with. Hearty portions of delectable Caribbean cuisine. This place is an absolute hole in the wall BUT a tasty one at dat, the staff is cordial and you can tell the food is good, you know why? Cuz someone’s old uncle is in the back stirring up a pot and he’s got sweat on his brow, so you know he’s back their working! I used to live right around the corner from this place so I was ALWAYS here. A few of my fave dishes are the tantalizing Oxtails, a bit sticky, well-seasoned and gravy for days! Yum! All meals are served with Rice & Peas(Jamaican style-*trust there’s a difference, all Caribbean folk depending on what island they are from make rice and peas differently) plantaing and steamed cabbage. I really was heavy in love with their oxtails for like a year, I even got my then-boyfriend addicted to them. The Curry Goat is also really good here and the prices are not bad. Small plates are around $ 6 – 7 and higher priced plates range from about $ 8 – 10, and the portions are heaping. Make sure you grab a cool refreshing beverage to wash it all down with. My personal faves are Ting(grapefruit soda), Malt(malted barley non-alcoholic beverage, or a Coke(cuz I’m addicted) :-) This restaurant is set up for dining-in but most people just Take Away, I’ve only dined«IN» the restaurant once, since I used to live right around the corner I preferred to smother myself in Oxtail goodness in the privacy of my own four walls. This location also sells a few authentic Jamaica grocery items, mainly Grace brand canned products… and a few breads and biscuits. I used to stock up on my plantain chips from here… matter of fact when you visit, get some plantain chips as well, between your heaping plate of succulent oxtail and rice & peas goodness, your Ting! and your chips… I doubt you’ll have spent more than $ 12. Since I no longer live nearby I only stop by here when I’m on the Eastside… but Oh how my heart & stomach still aches for the goodness that is their oxtails!
