Our family has been eating here for years. We have never had a bad meal. The ribs are excellent. The steaks, house dressing, shrimp cocktail and brown salted bread are also great. Nice, friendly and attentive wait staff and ambience. You better get there early on the weekends for dinner or you will be waiting in a long line.

Just ate there. Awesome as always! I had the filet mignon, house salad dressing, and baked tater. Steak extremely tender and I get mine medium well! Hubby had the cabbage rolls which is an old family recipe. Aisha was our awesome waitress who checked on us all through dinner – best service EVER! She deserves a raise!(And no I’m not biased just met her tonight). Manager checked on us and said cabbage rolls were his grandma recipe. Oh. did I mention the bread! Salted rye to die for! Great date night out with my honey!

Found this place by accident in April of 2013 as we were from out of town and here for a major event(WGI World Championships). I’m from the South where BBQIS king and even dives have better BBQ menus than this place does. This place has BBQ in the name, but that’s all it has. Only 3BBQ items on the dinner menu. Had the chicken and it was dry and overwhelmed with some kind of so called BBQ sauce. We NEVER went back nor would we EVER recommend it, especially if you’re looking for REALBBQ. If you’re going to call yourself a BBQ restaurant, then your menu needs to reflect it. Just because you’ve been in business for a long time doesn’t mean you don’t need to up your game. Service was almost non-existent as well. When you have to go chase a waitress down to get anything, it’s BAD and I will NOT leave a tip for such bad service. Prior reviews give it 4 – 5 stars but frankly, 1 is being generous.

Ribs, house salad, shrimp cocktail and rye bread are all great! For out of towners, this isn’t typical bbq, but it is still delicious. This place is a Dayton staple and a must stop

Why a 5 Star? because I absolutely love their house salad! I love it so much I actually ordered a «double salad» for my 2 sides. Keep in mind a «double salad» is a huge heaping bowl of their mouth watering homemade salad dressing(that you can buy and take home and if you do be sure to ask the server how to ask the salad at home as there is a special way). I think I ate a full basket of the rye bread with salt on top. My goodness, that plus the salad is a meal a by itself. Oh by the way, someone in my party got the 13oz Sirloin Steak and they and it was very very good. While I recommend the Ribs or chicken, the steak isn’t bad wither!

As Dayton locals this is one place we had never been. Since it is so close to Christmas we probably didn’t pick the ideal day or time to stop in as the place was busting at the seems. Despite the 45minute wait, which honestly I do not hold it against them, as I said it was Saturday night the food was only mediocre. We ordered the shrimp cocktail, ribs & fries, and chicken with baked potato both with salads. The shrimp cocktail and salty bread was the highlight of my meal. The cocktail sauce is SPICY and not for the faint of heart. But really was terrific. The salty brown bread was different and yummy(I even took extra home). Our meals though we’re just eh. The chicken tasted like it was boiled and tossed in the oven and slathered with some BBQ. The ribs tasted boiled and slathered too. We didn’t care for the sauce on the food, as we prefer BBQ that is sweeter rather then the vinegar based sauce the restaurant uses. The food overall wasn’t inedible, I’m just not so sure it was worth the $ 58 and 60 minute wait. I do give the place 3 stars though because everyone was friendly, the place is certainly a local favorite(even if it’s not ours) and the shrimp cocktail was good.

Visiting family for a couple of days and decided on Hickory for dinner. The place was crowded and we waited a solid 45 minutes to get a table. The bar and wait staffs were very pleasant, informative and a pleasure to deal with. Our waitress was very informative. We were told about the salty bread, one of the 3 different breads served to the table and we all devoured that variety first. We were told the ribs were ‘bite off the bone’ not ’ fall off the bone’ and it was delivered as advertised. The pork flavor was good, I agree with a few other reviews that it was a bit to heavy on the vinegar. The salad was iceberg blandness and the green beans were slightly doctored canned.(I experienced this GB phenom at another restaurant close by, maybe a regional thing?). My wife and son had the broasted chicken and it was dry, rotisserie fried chicken. She was not impressed. We did try the cabbage roll and we all agreed it was different and quite tasty. I would return and try some other bbq before searching elsewhere but I would need to be a bit more impressed to make me a regular.

First time dining in. What a great place. We had a wait and sat at the bar. My drink was great and the bartender was friendly. When we were seated we were greeted right away. Our server was attentive and our drinks were never empty. I got the salad with house dressing. Great and garlicky. Bread basket had salted rye, white and mini bagels. Our food came out and I had ribs and green beans both were very good. My boyfriend got chicken with mushrooms and Steak fries. Fries were crisp and the mushrooms seasoned well. The only thing I would change was ask for more sauce but didn’t stop eating long enough to ask. Great time will definitely be back

Unfortunately, I was disappointed. This place looks like it has been around for awhile, so I was hoping it was around for a good reason. But, the salad had too much dressing and that set the tone for the rest of the meal. The BBQ had SO much mustard to it. It was just not my cup of tea. If you like BBQ and you are in Dayton, the drive down to Cincy to the nearest Montgomery Inn is SO worth it!

A rare 5 stars, but this place rocks. Great food, prices, service. Salted brown bread, cabbage rolls and fried oysters started the night perfectly. I will be thinking about the Cabbage Rolls for a few days. T-Bones, Porterhouses, Strips and Filets all massive and perfect. Paired with a Steltner Claret, this was a home run meal. If you are in the UD area(or not) hit this place hard.

Just had dinner with the family here. I ordered the Barbecued Chicken with a baked potato and tossed salad with the house dressing(a sweet and sour garlic dressing). The dressing was, to my surprise, very good actually. Very subtly sour and the garlic wasn’t overpowering at all. The chicken was quite a lot to take in, was extremely tender and perfectly cooked. It was absolutely delicious. I recommend this.

Disclaimer… I lived in Texas for over 25 years so I have a biased perspective. Hopefully this well be helpful to others regardless. We had a relative from overseas in town who wanted to try some American BBQ. Not native to the Dayton area ourselves, we asked around and was referred here. Normally we make our own but did not have the time this weekend. The place was packed so we put our names on the list and walked over to another pub to have a drink and wait. In the mean time, my husband and made a $ 5.00 bet. I bet that it would be disappointing but not just by Texas standards. My husband bet that it would be okay, obviously not as good as our favorite BBQ place deep in the heart of Texas, but good. We walked back, got seated right away. First, we all choked on the overly salted bread that was served. The bread itself was freshly baked and could have been wonderful but for some reason it had been rolled in sea salted which covered the crust. After brushing off the salt, it was tolerable. Salads, I tried the house dressing. Oily mess that had too much garlic that someone attempted to cut by adding sugar. Also, I am not a fan of iceburg lettuce, especially the white tasteless cuts. Next the BBQ came. We ordered 2 sides of ribs and 1 chicken. My husband happily dove into the ribs… hesitated for a moment then dug into his wallet and handed me a 5 dollar bill. Sauce: wwwwaaaaayyyyyy too much vinegar with a sweet kick that was probably the worse sauce I have ever tried. GFS has a better sauce… sorry. Ribs: undercooked. It is easy to get that ‘fall of the bone’ yumminess. Not sure why they can’t slow cook their meat properly. Finally, please don’t serve overcooked veggies. The green beans served as a side should have had a ‘RIP’ marker as they had been cooked to death. I have a feeling that the person in charge of tasting the food is a heavy smoker as everything that I tasted was overwhelming and unbalanced. Kudos to them though for having such a stellar biz… not sure how but there it is. I guess it is a ‘tradition’ thing to come here. Will not be mine, I will not return.

Absolutely the worst bar-b-que in the US. In fact, it is an insult to bar-b-que to call the cr*p this place serves bar-b-que. Ribs must be left out in the desert they are so dry. Charred bones with what used to resemble pork between them. If I were in need of new soles for my shoes or water skis, I would order their ribs. If anyone tells you this place is any good, I would seriously doubt the credibility of anything else they tell you. I wouldn’t eat at this place if they paid me to do it. I could go on, but I’m sure you get the point.

Ordered the ½ BBQ Chicken for lunch and it was alright. I called in my order from work and it was ready in 15 minutes. I appreciated their private lot since that strip of brown street can get busy. Easy in and out. The ½ chicken came with one side and I choose the green beans. Every thing was fine. The BBQ sauce on the chicken was very«tangy» as some other reviewers have said and it wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great. As a Kansas Citian it didn’t quite satisfy my BBQ craving but I’ll probably try them again before passing final judgement.

Family tradition I’ve grown up at Hickory Bar-B Que on Brown street, many a family birthday, special occasion and holiday spent at the Hickory. Their drinks are reasonably priced and now they’re serving their own house wines with generous pours. You have to have the house salad with the crumbled blue cheese on top. The breadbasket served with the salad has the mini-bagels and their rye bread is good or you can ask for a a basket just of the rye bread. Their filet is the best steak. We celebrated my dad’s 71st birthday this evening. He enjoys their huge t-bone. Whenever you’re in Dayton, OH you won’t be disappointed with a visit to Hickory on Brown street.
