A very beautiful secluded Island off the Georgia coast between Brunswick & Savannah. Home of Allen Bailey of the KC Chiefs. Island is only accessible via Ferry & is maintained and operated by Dept of Natural Resources. A gorgeous combination of virtually secluded beaches and wildness wildlife reserves. A population of approximately 70 people have homes on the island however far less live there full time. The beaches are pristine, practically secluded, depending upon how many visitors are on the almost primitive Island at a given time. Cabretta Island Beach is located at the Cabretta Pioneer Campground — a small area for primitive campers, with a small necessities outpost containing an indoor/outdoor shower area & camp gear cleaning area. The campground is adorned w various shell Art & man made sculptures of various nature materials. Seemingly out of place is the old R.J. Reynolds Mansion. A huge extravagant estate visited by past well known wealthy historical figures & Presidents. A beautiful pool graces the entryway but it remains perpetually drained w a maiden statue of marble centered perfectly. It’s not open to the public, but tours are provided & conventions are hosted there. Across the way is the UGA Marine Research Facility which gathers data & maintains Greys Reef. The reef is a man made reef 60 miles off the coast & hosts many cultures of ocean life. Greys Reef Beach holds a beautiful pavilion and boardwalk along w picnic areas. It’s a quite, lesser known site popular for intimate weddings. The only transportation on the entire Island is buses provided by Cabretta Campground, DNR, UGA, or private residences. Private owners sometimes provide vacation stays which may include an island vehicle. The only commerce on Sapelo Island is a small general store available for emergency provisions and maintains limited hours. The beauty of the island is breathtaking. It’s filled with peace and calm. A wonderful place to rest, relax, or gather w family with no outside distractions other than Mother Nature. Plan your visit wisely.
