Came here for the first time to take a swing dance class with the Dallas Swing Dance Society(DSDS) This Building actually has various groups who use this building to original more their respective art based organizations, which included the DSDS). The building itself has a lot of character and is just on the border if not in downtown. The inside is clean, including the bathrooms. I do hate the location because I hate driving in downtown areas, and it’s easy to miss the entrance. Also carpool! Because their parking is very limited although they do have an overflow parking area. Now as for the DSDS, they hold workshops and socials for swing dancing. I came for the social which is basically 1 hour of beginners lessons then 2 hours of open floor dance to use what you learned(This was $ 8 for newcomers/non-members and $ 5 for members). Don’t fear if you didn’t bring a partner because the men will randomly look and ask for girls to dance with them, and for women this class had more men than girls so there is almost a 90% you will be asked(although I think it’s best to bring a group of friends that includes males and females just in case you feel awkward asking a stranger to dance or dancing with a stranger). The dance instructors are hilarious, supportive and very fun. I only wish the lesson was longer but you get the basics down, it’s just s matter of improvising the order of moves after they teach them to you. They break the class down showing those who take the lead(often the men but not limited to) and those who follow(often the women but not limited to). The instructors will stand in the middle and the couples make a circle that fills the outer rim of the large room so you can all see. You will be switching partners throughout the lesson, they do this especially of there is more boys than girls that all the men can have a try at learning(I think I rotated with 6 or 7 partners for the lessons). After the lessons then your free to just find a partner and dance(there are some ground rules then mention beforehand though to prevent injuries as well as inappropriate behavior). It was so amazing to see the mix of dancers on the dance floor from experienced pros(which are so entertaining to watch) to the newbies. Don’t be shy about it asking others to dance or just putting yourself out there, because everyone is there for just one purpose and that is to dance, everyone is very supportive and the whole atmosphere was so much fun and relaxed. So just go out there and have fun! I will DEFINITELY come back and recommended this to others!
