RO2 is a contemporary art gallery founded by Jordan Roth and his mother, and is closely aligned with Dallas art locals, The MAC, Mckinny Avenue Contemporary, and CADD, contemporary art dealers of Dallas. This small gallery right downtown may be small but the quirky selections bespeak an independence and a true love of contemporary art a notch above gallery as high arts and crafts and big name label whores that you might associate with Dallas mass shopping culture. Cartoony alien illustrations with a nod toward Mesosmerican tribal art was on display for my recent visit in the $ 500-$ 5000 price range.

Ro2 Art Downtown Gallery is just one of a few gallery spaces the Ro2 company has in Dallas. This one in particular is located with an entrance on Elm St just west of Jimmy John’s, under the third rail lofts building. The space is pretty small, with a 15×15′ or so area at the front, a small bar area, and then a 20×30′(ish) food room in the back. The layout makes it so you enter and are immediately in the middle of an exhibit, which is not particularly great for flow. I was there for the night and day exhibit and I wish they’d swapped where the paintings vs. photographs were located, since the paintings were larger they required more space to view, and they were set up in the front, so to stand and look at one meant people would be walking in front of you constantly to enter or leave the gallery. Hopefully in the future they’ll consider this sort of thing when laying out the art, but otherwise the space was sufficient for a small show, and convenient for folks who live downtown, and anyone with a car really to visit. The parking downtown at metered spots is free after 6pm every day, so a 7−10pm gallery opening is easily accessible by all in this location.
