After 43 years of only spending work time in the hospital, I spent three times as a patient between Summer 2008 and Summer 2009. All three were for injuries related to stupidity. When I was stupid enough to walk down a bowling lane wearing sneakers at a birthday party, I predictably fell. As a doctor, the loud pop and searing pain that came from my right knee alerted me that I was in for a pretty bad upcoming year. When I could put my hand under my patella through my skin, I knew that I’d ruptured my quadriceps tendon, which is a devastating injury and that a recovery to 90% or better would be a blessing and would require good care, hard work and good luck. My brain scanned all the top sports medicine orthopedists in Dallas. There are great docs at all the major hospitals. Since I practice at Medical City and some of these great docs were just downstairs(for me down the elevator) from my office, I figured it would be logistically easier to see the nearby doctor. Choosing those in the group, I figured that Medlock would harass me less than his partners that I knew better, and he’s done a sports medicine fellowship to boot. Virgil got me in quickly, and a few days later I had my quadriceps reattached to my knee. Postoperatively, things went well and I bounced back quickly. Given the severity of the injury, it’s taken me a full year to get pretty well back to things, and I can do all exercises except sprints and BJJ, which will come back once I lose the weight I gained while parked on my butt. As a doctor/colleague of Dr. Virgil Medlock and as a patient, I’d recommend him without reservation for your sports medicine and orthopedic needs.
