If you are looking for a classical, traditional ballet school – one where your child will grow both as a dancer and as a person – this is it. I know there are a bunch of schools you could choose from in Dallas, some of whom will tell you that your 2-year old doesn’t have the body to be a dancer, but that is not the style at City Ballet. They treat each and every dancer the same and teach them no matter whether they hope to end up at Juliard or simply in a high school musical. This is the kind of ballet school I attended as a child and exactly what I’d hoped to find for my girls. The owner of the school, Denise Brown was one of the most respected prima ballerinas, having trained in Paris and danced in Europe. Her legacy lives on in her daughter, Evelyn, who now runs the school. This school fosters confidence and a love of both music and dance. If you’re unsure, attend the yearly recital and you’ll be blown away. Evelyn writes the ballet herself and it truly tells a story; it’s not just groups of overdressed kids(oh, speaking of costumes, the costumes at City Ballet are always age-appropriate and never, ever, ever over the line in terms of scantily clad kids. I want to stress this point because I’ve seen costumes from some of the other schools and I’ve been shocked), but instead it’s a real ballet. I have also talked to parents of other girls who attended other schools before coming to City Ballet and all talked about how much happier their children were once they switched. To me, nothing speaks louder than that. Well, my daughter’s non-stop smile during class maybe is a little louder for me. :)
