I thought food was pretty good. Not a huge variety of food so you have to like fried food. The chicken biscuit again was good!

We went on a Friday night at 7pm and it was packed the line out the door. No sense of urgency and only one register. Extremely frustrating. Especially when the employees are just standing around laughing. The chicken was small pieces and 10 were $ 29. Way over priced. I was surprised to not get sides or bread with that price. I did however like the pickles they put on top of the chicken. This review gets 3 stars for their large flavorful biscuits and REAL butter.

So the reviews on this place are all over the map. It’s not far from my place, so a friend and I decided to give it a shot. The atmosphere is totally chill, being attached to the Foundry you can get your drink on and on the right night, hear a band play. I love the place itself… very nice. I ordered the Foundry, which had chicken tenders, mashed potatoes, cheese, oregano vinegar honey(sounds strange, but pretty good), beer mustard and… wait.for.it.BACON. I also got a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. I was honestly very underwhelmed with the food. With southern cooking I expect a bit of savory flavor, everything was very bland. except the gravy. even it needed more kick. Really just some salt and pepper would kick everything up a bit. Even the BACON didn’t have much flavor… and that’s just sad. So sad :-(The biscuit itself was kind of hard, but seeing as the entire sandwich is really meant to be eaten with a knife and fork all that got broken up in the mix. So I can totaly see where other reviewers are coming from. I’d like to try the fried chicken, but I think they need to spend a little time reading some reviews here and work on their flavor profile. The concept can only last so long if nothing is improved upon. I’ll give it another try someday… maybe

This is a strange place. Parking is a nightmare and the valet fills up very quickly. If you live nearby and there’s no über surcharge and your are craving fried chicken — then I’d say this is a good place to go. But after paying 2x Über fares to get here on a Saturday evening — I was disappointed. I’m sure this place is great during the day if you have kids. There’s a little playground and it’s basically set up like a backyard picnic. No one will mind if your children are running around and screaming or crying because you are outside, far away from most civilization and the music is going to start soon and then no one will be able to hear them at all. We waited in a long line for our food and then received table numbers. We were told that we could move to the adult side(The Foundry) as there was no place to sit on the playground(Chicken Scratch) side. Then when we sat down at one of the many empty picnic tables we noticed signs saying«Reserved at 5:30 p.m.» It was 7:30 p.m. so I assumed whatever Senior Special/Kids birthday party dinner happened at 5:30 was long gone. Nope. An employee came by and said we couldn’t sit there. Keep in mind this side of the venue was empty. I pointed out that it was two hours past the reserved time and the place was empty and he agreed the signs were confusing then he took it off the table and said we still couldn’t sit there. Ok. You can’t park here. You can’t sit here. The chicken was good but come on. Go to KFC next time. Or ANYWHERE else they serve fried chicken in Dallas.

I had eaten here like a year ago and I reviewed it stating that it sucked balls… Well, I felt guilty and thought that I was being way too critical. I mean, the place has its loyal customer base and they swear that this place is the shiznet… So, I not only went back one more time, but I went back 2 other times with friends who wanted to try this shithole. So, yes… It’s a shithole. The food sucks, the piece of micro chicken they slop you with is 70% fat and skin. And it’s salty. On a crap ass mediocre biscuit… Hell, Popeyes biscuits puts this joint to shame and they are a chain restaurant… Again, if you’re a hipster/millenial then you will love this place. But, if you truly have a decent palate, you will not waste your time on this joke. Unless you want to burn $ 40 on a biscuit you can get at any Chikfila 100 miles around you…

The thing about this place is that I have never gone and received what I ordered. It’s super annoying to have to get up, explain to the dumb workers why they did it wrong, and deal with their attitude. First, half the chicken they served was PINK raw. I told them and they replaced it with old, dry leftover pieces. When you order the«whole chicken» you’re not getting a whole chicken, lower your expectations because you’ll be getting 4 tiny wings in there. Seriously their food isn’t good enough to risk salmonella and deal with sassy hispanic workers who obviously don’t want to be there

I went there yesterday and had a chicken biscuit, it was good but it had a sweetness to it. I prefer salty. Still good. Decided to order a bit more, three piece tenders buffalo style. They messed up and never brought my order after 30 minutes, I asked for a refund. After two employees there asked what happened and then I repeated my answer a third time to a manager to finally get a refund. They did not handle their screw up well. I felt cheated out of time.

I went around 9 pm on a Sunday, and it was pretty slow. The waitress took a long time to get to our table even though we were the only ones at a table. We had to flag someone down to get service. On a positive note, the food was delicious! I got the beer mustard sauce and honey cilantro sauce. They were both delicious! The set up inside and outside was nice. It wasn’t cookie cutter box. It was low key, comfortable, and intimate. However I do recommend more TVs especially during football and basketball seasons! Planning on going back to try more.

I would recommend going if you love live music and a good patio. The owners did a great job with the build out. We only had the wings in terms of food. They were good and I like the crumbled blue cheese in the middle of the wings as opposed to a side of dressing. The local beer on draft was more on the expensive side so we decided to go to another place for more drinks and dinner.

Really good biscuit sandwiches. They are indeed huge, which makes them hard to eat, even with a fork and knife. The surprise stars here are the salads though! I would have never guessed. The hummus salad and the veggie salad are both incredible! The sides have been hit or miss. So is parking there. Also, I wish they kept the kitchen open one more hour.

I don’t even want to write a positive review about Chicken Scratch. I don’t want you to know about it… because it’s too good for Dallas. For years this was the only place in DFW that took me back to Austin. The outdoor patio with live is one of the best. Laid back and funky. The neighborhood used to be really sketchy, which added to the draw. The only people who came here were the ones who knew about its greatness. Now that the bridge has transformed the area, the secret is out. Chicken Scratch is awesome. The knife and fork chicken biscuits are out of this world. For example, The Chicken Scratch biscuit — fried chicken fingers, collard greens, Texas red sauce and an egg — had an amazing, craveable flavor. But the Mac and cheese with hominy and green chile really drives it home. Unbelievable goodness. You want local beer? They have it all. I hope I don’t see you at Chicken Scratch… but if you do go save me a seat… and a Blood and Honey.

I finally got suckered into coming last weekend. I knew Chicken Scratch and The Foundry meshed together — but I didn’t realize how much. There is zero separation between the two. We went to ‘The Foundry’ — only clear distinction is that there was clear plastic isolating the music/stage area — where we got stamped. We sat at a bench and found both menus on the table. So they serve Chicken Scratch food inside this makeshift separation device. We left this area before ordering because 1. We couldn’t breathe; it was so hot, and 2. The music was trapped inside and we couldn’t speak to our group. Lesson learned that The Foundry is for jamming and not conversing with friends. Since it was a rather brisk night, they had the fires going(no heat lamps). There is no way for you to leave without smelling like a campfire — so dress appropriately. The ground is just a bunch of pebbles. I didn’t think this was a big deal until we got in the car and realized our shoes and pants were covered in dust. Saw a girl come in with suede heels — sad face for her. The food is completely underwhelming. The breading for the chicken tenders were pretty good, but the actual chicken didn’t have seasoning. But don’t fret! Their tenders are half breading so you can’t even tell you are eating bland chicken. Their ‘big ass salads’ are pathetic. We had a Cesar salad that was romaine + mayo, and the size of a large side. The most off-putting was how slow our food came out. We came in a big group and took turns ordering. Three separate pairs in our group got their food first and they ordered WELL after we did. My husband asked for our food, and they said my single biscuit order held them up. LOLz — two of the parties had biscuit sandwiches. This is not a place to apologize or comp anything because they are too busy being trendy and cool. *eye roll* Oh yeah, I tried my friend’s coconut waffles. I don’t know what the hullabaloo is because that is just a regular waffle with random bits of coconut flakes inside. In the end, this place is more for those that want to be with their friends(what we did) and enjoy the night together. Don’t come here expecting good food. If you want fried chicken so bad, there’s a million southern restaurants in Dallas that just popped up that can give you better flavor.

Though I am vegetarian, I am still a child of the South. And Chicken Scratch definitely has a Southern feel to it. Yes, it may have some definite hipster flair to it, but the good ol comfort food that makes Mississippi lead the country in diabetes is why you should come to Chicken Scratch. Though we only had fries while there for a friend’s going away party, I did partake in their beer list. Extensively. It’s legit. Not Common Table or Meddlesome Moth legit, but legit enough to have a wide variety of Texas taps, cans, and bottles. Mix that with the scenery outside in the wonderful Texas sun, and you have a pretty nice afternoon planned out, hoping that it extends into the night.

Went to lunch with some co-workers. I had been once before around the time it had opened and to be honest, wasnt very impressed. However I had been hearing things around the office about their biscuit sandwiches and figured it was worth another chance. When we arrived, I got distracted by their coconut waffles and decided to give it a try and paired it with their tenders. My waffle arrived topped with three tenders, a dollop of honey butter and a tiny tub of syrup on the side. the tenders can with a light drizzle of a very thin sauce. the first bite, minus the syrup was dry, the waffle kind of soggy but with a nice coconut-y flavor. The tenders didnt have a very crunchy exterior however… when everything is combined together all the flavors come together really well making it a very tasty meal. I thought that my meal was enjoyable, but the waffle was really limp, borderline soggy as if it had been sitting in a warmer and I wasnt crazy about the breading on the chicken but I did enjoy the overall combined flavor. I’d go here again if i was invited but I would probably not go out of my way

Fried chicken is probably one of my guiltiest pleasures. There’s nothing like a nice, juicy dark meat chicken with crunchy/tender skin. My favorite thing at Chicken Scratch are the chicken fingers. The dipping sauces are great. If you’re looking for bone-in chicken, I’d suggest somewhere else. The gravy on the mashed potatoes is solid, and the biscuit with extra honey is also a favorite. Other than the food, love the décor and environment. You can order the chicken at the bar next door(Foundry), or order in the restaurant and have it delivered to you at the bar. My reason for giving it 3 stars is the bone-in chicken isn’t that great(skin is too thick and crunchy), and some of the sides are hit or miss.

This restaurant is definitely a «best in class» winner. The fried chicken is excellent(and I’m not a fan of anything fried) and the dipping sauces are sooo good. The service is almost as good as the food.(The service is great but I’m still sold on the buttermilk fried chicken.) And, they have a full bar to complement to the chicken. The outdoor seating works for small adult groups, families, even toddlers who want to just run around. The bandstand constructed of wooden pallets is super cool although few people probably even know that. :) Chicken Scratch is my new favorite place in South Dallas and it’s a bargain considering the food, atmosphere and service. Rain or shine, I highly recommend Chicken Scratch.

SOGOOD. I don’t think my words can do the chicken justice. I had the chicken with coconut waffle, and it was just crunchy and delicious. The chicken was so flavorful and moist. The waffle was just sweet enough with a hint of coconut. It was just the perfect combination. My friends thought there was too much breading, but I thought it was the perfect amount. I just can’t stop rambling on about it. Definitely would come here again. By far the best chicken & waffle dishes I’ve had! The place is styled similar to a farm, and it looks beautiful during the night. There is also a foundry located right next to it. We didn’t have time to try it out though, but I’m sure it’s great. Such a nice location for an amazing restaurant!

Truly a hipster location hidden in an array of architecture made from scrap metal and wood pellets. There’s a bar right next to the restaurant, but they have a strict age policy for you to even sit at the bar. I ordered a chicken waffle with chicken thighs. Honestly the portion was too small even for me. If there was more chicken to balance out the sweetness of waffle + syrup I would’ve been happier. The waffle also comes with coconut flakes on top, which was just okay. Might return to try something else on the menu.

I love fried chicken! I decided to bring friends that were visiting town here since they also love chicken as much as I do. My friends decided to get an order of 12 tenders with a large order of fries. I opted for the biscuit sandwich and went with The Foundry, although the smothered was really appealing to me also. The foundry consisted of mashed potatoes, a THICK slice of bacon, beer mustard, honey and finally topped off with a slice of american cheese. When my order arrived, I now know why they say its a fork and knife biscuit sandwich. It’s huge and definitely falls apart when you take a bite out of it. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, the whole thing was just decadent. A great biscuit for sure. I’ll be back to try out«the smothered» next time, a fried chicken biscuit topped with gravy fries sounds quite delicious.

Okay place for a casual night out. It is a indoor outdoor type restaurant, Texas style. The food type is in the name, mainly chicken served at this joint. Fried chicken that is. I was here for a work event so the venue is great for groups. We had a pre-selected menu so it was all picked out for us. Went at night which was a good experience with the lighting outside. However they did have the multi-color lite water jugs that were lit up around the venue that were off a little bit. I remember when this place was right next to a trailer park and now it looks like they took the park down and built this beautiful apartment building that definitely has increased the perception of this area. I hope this is the direction it is going. It could make for a cool hot spot. Overall the food was just okay. I had mac and cheese, fried chicken and green beans. Nothing stood out as phenomenal, but it did make for a pretty good place to grab some grub and enjoy a couple of beers. As I said this place is okay and I think the area around it is starting to develop in the right direction. Give it a few years and this whole area will probably be elevated a little more.
