Don’t count on your reservation being filled. We reserved a weekend camp site on the east side of Artesian Creek because we knew there was a chance of rain and flooding. We also wanted to reduce traffic noise from 408 and I-20 by being more interior to the reservation. We got moved to the west side into«the only campsite available» and were trapped for a while by high water after a hard rain. We managed the issue and the Boys were fine but it was inconvenient and it appeared to be avoidable. I understand the need to balance reservations, however we walked by multiple EMPTY camp sites on the way to Lake Shirley on Saturday that never appeared to be filled.

My son had a camp out with his boy scout troop and I normally have found so many reasons why we never go but this time I’m really glad we did. I know I always notice times on the news where some young man has done something great or helped save a life and he says I just used my training from the Boy scouts. I will tell you I never was a scout but I wanted to call my Mom and ask her why didn’t you ever sign me up. My son is a Webelo so this particular camp out was to show them exactly what the Boy Scouts are about and how these young men have learned so much & how they put that to good use.
The weekend started with a opening ceremony where they were blaring music and getting people to be excited about what was going to take place. The weekend was pretty much run by older scouts who displayed everything from tying knots to cooking with a Dutch oven. They also shot BB guns and learned about the Ham radio and first aid and mass casualty drills. I can honestly tell you I really wasn’t sure if my son would continue on in the Boy scouts but I felt this pride in my heart that made me really stress to him just how important it is for him to stick with it. The young men that we met seemed to be so confident and enjoy everything they were teaching they truly embodied leaders of men. The camp out took place at Camp Wisdom which itself was great. I can’t believe that such a great place is hidden in the city. The landscape there really made me feel like I was hours away from home even though it was more like 30 minutes. I can’t wait for my son to continue his journey. I just feel like a fool that it took me this long to recognize just how much the scouts can offer my son.
