Set in rustic corner building that could either be on the set of the Dukes of Hazzard or some Wolfman Jack starring horror movie, this low key and non pretentious BBQ staple offers low cost, 1st class Texas authentic meats: amazing ribs, spicy sausage, chicken and more! For those of you who’ve just given up, there are a variety of fried pies to launch you into a self induced shame cycle. The soft serve machine and plastic cutlery dispenser are throwback vintage enough to make you feel just like you’re back in elementary school(or jail). #youknowwhoyouare

Pretty good. The view from the rooftop patio seating area is great! The food was good. I didn’t care for the potato salad, but everything else was good.

First, my wife and I love Baker’s Rib BBQ. We have been eating their BBQ for 20 years. However, this just isn’t their best location. We have gone to this restaurant a dozen times because it is close to our house. But, the staff at this one just isn’t that good. The Baker’s Rib off I-30 and the one in Weatherford are much better. So, if you go here and don’t like it, try some of the other locations. Also, they have recently changed their buns. Not a good move.

I walked from the green line dart train stop at Baylor Hospital two blocks south to Baker’s Ribs on Main St. For the most part, I just followed the smell of barbecue. It’s cafeteria style ordering, so line up at the hot food station just past the foyer. Pick your meat, your sides, and by the time you get to the cash register at the end, your meal will be ready. You’ll also get a rubber bottle of sauce for the table. The drink station is fill-your-own. I had the chopped brisket sandwich that was comparable to other BBQ places. The green beans were warm, and the squash casserole was as good as it looked. The serve-yourself free ice cream was completely melted, so that was a bust. The only other issue was that they close relatively early, especially considering the show times of the comedy club next door. You’ll have about an hour or so to kill if you plan to come here for dinner before a show. Both the restaurant and the bathrooms were clean and accessible. I would definitely return.

Had lunch here! Everyone was super friendly– food was great! Brisket was smokey and fresh– fries were hot out of the fryer and the potato salad was on point too. No complaints here!

Melt in your mouth brisket… great salt coated baked potato. Looks like the fried pies are good but I only have heard from a friend since I don’t eat fried pie because of the sugar and grain… worth the stop

Ok I’m not a expert on BBQ food or whats good in Texas but I did try the Breakfast egg and Brisket wrap it was so good I mean it was hot the Brisket was smokey flavored something I been looking for since I arrive here in Texas. Next time I will try the Turkey and the Tacos Im not touching the Mac and Cheese and Ribs after reading the reviews. I need to try those fried pies though since that is what they are famous for the lemon looks good. The location I went to in Deep Ellum seems a little bunched in I’m going to try the Northwest location instead. my breakfast sandwich was about 2.50 I think.

Finding Baker’s was complete serendipity. We were driving around Deep Ellum looking for another restaurant; couldn’t find it; and just before we were ready to give up and head back across the river to more familiar territory, we spotted this cute building with plenty of parking and decided that was a sign we should try it. We all got the chopped beef sandwich. I got okra and mac n cheese for my sides. Someone in the group got onion rings if I remember correctly. Everything was delicious. The beef was tender and the sauce was your typical Texas style sauce which is a good thing. We picked up three fried pies to go(peach, cherry, and apricot) and had them for breakfast the next day. They were very good reheated. If you have kids, they will enjoy the free soft serve machine. What am I saying — my dad enjoyed it also and my mom took advantage of it to make herself a root beer float!

Outstanding BBQ; liked everything I had. The fried pie store inside was unexpected and really cool.

I’m in town on a trip and needed to try some Texas BBQ and found Bakers on Unilocal.Needless to say this was a great decision because the food was fantastic. I ordered the rib plate after being recommended by one of their friendly employees. I ordered the ribs with Mac n cheese and potato salad as my 2 sides and couldn’t be more happier! The ribs were tender and seasoned well. The employees were all friendly and engaging. I would definitely recommend this place for good BBQ!

Tender smoky ribs, crunchy fried okra, well seasoned pinto beans. And an amazingly tasty fried pecan pie to finish.

I’m not even sure why this place is still open. It’s not that it’s the worst thing ever, but I don’t see how anyone could ever come back here for BBQ. The BBQ and sides are on par with something you’d find in your freezer, and far more expensive. It could have been worse, but only if it was cold or uncooked. Just very bland. However, they also have fried pies, which are amazing. I’m guessing that these are what keep Baker’s in business. They are some of the best I’ve ever had and great to take home and have for breakfast. But again, skip the BBQ.

Nice heaping portions of meat. Got the brisket and pork with sides of potato salad and mac and cheese. The meat, while well cooked, was slightly dry, so a little BBQ sauce was needed. The sides were tasty. I’d say this is average BBQ, maybe slightly better than average. Not a great beer selection and were out of most except Bud and Bud Light. Liked the free soft serve ice cream. I thought this was a waitress type restaurant but its more along the lines of order your food, wait for it in line and sit down somewhere in the dining room. The place is someaht big and would be better served with a bar to have a few drinks and relax. The atmosphere is kind of like eat your food and leave. But the staff was friendly and helpful.

Went here for the first time for a co-worker’s birthday. I had been to the older Deep Ellum locay on Commerce and was underwhelmed but I must say this one was very nice. The staff was very friendly. The meat was tasty. The french fries were delicious as ever. I usually get the sandwich plate with either chicken or turkey. I tasted a rib and it was very tender. May try those once in a while. The bathroom was good and clean which is muey importante a mi. I have already been back!

Wow! This is like having two restaurants in one. Depending on which door you enter you’ll either be smacked with the pies or sucker punched with the BBQ. What a novel concept that seems to work for these guys. Be careful coming here, it is easy to get addicted. Who’d have thought a pie for breakfast would be kick ass goody good? Yes, I said pie for breakfast. They serve up fresh homemade pies that deliver some flaky, fresh, all around delicious goodness. For breakfast you can choose between tacos or pies. Of course I tried both. The breakfast pies are bacon, egg, cheese, or, sausage, egg n cheese. I tried them both, and, liked the sausage option best. Breakfast pies are good, but only if you are sitting down to eat. Give me tacos for breakfast any day. Yes, any day, and, every day. I am constantly sniffing out tacos. The breakfast tacos here are pretty good for the most part. I liked the chorizo and the sausage both with egg and cheese. They give you salsa and pico also. Their salsa is lame and registers on the wimp scale. Please pass the tabasco when tacoing here. The pies aren’t limited to just breakfast. Laws no. You can also enjoy fresh, made from scratch, pies for lunch and supper. You get nine options of filling. I have tried the chicken and veggies and the beef and veggies. Both are freaking solid choices! Next on my sites are the brisket, pulled pork, comfort, spinach & mushroom, and, pepperoni. How stupid would it be to not have dessert pies? Yes, they have dessert pies. You can get them hot from the fryer, room temperature, or, frozen. I like my pies chilled. These guys offer dessert fillings of the typical apricot, apple, blackberry, cherry, peach, and, pineapple. You can get those sugar free also. Let’s not forget cream. Can’t offer pies without having cream filling! Laws no! Chocolate, coconut, lemon, and, vanilla. Coconut and lemon are solid! Oh my God, they are solid! They also offer pecan pie. Not in the mood for pie? Round the corner and you’ll be in BBQ town. They have some pretty dang good lunch deals like three sloppy joes for seven bucks! I was only able to eat one! The sloppy was greasy, but, weirdly enough it miraculously worked. The joe was a nice mound of pulled brisket coated in a nice BBQ sauce that wasn’t over sweet. Their plate meals come with two sides or a baked potato. I have tried the ribs, brisket, sausage, potato salad, mac n cheese, and, the baked beans. The ribs were pretty tasty, but, a bit on the tough side. I would do them again for sure. You get five ribs on the plate special with two sides for around $ 10. Definitely enough food for the price. To me, the brisket was just ok. Nothing standing out with the flavor. Average at best. The sausage was a disappointment. Very low quality sausage that was drowned in it’s own grease. As for the sides? Typical Texas BBQ joint sides. The mac n cheese was too gummy and had a flour rue taste. The baked beans were unique in flavor, and, I really enjoyed them. As for the potato salad? WTF was that? All I could say. Mayonnaise based, and, bland. Boring stuff. Overall, I am a big fan of this place. I have never been a fan of sides in a BBQ joint. Why have sides? I prefer meat, meat, meat, and, more meat. Sides are always disappointing and have a way of filling you up prematurely. Come visit this place, you won’t be disappointed. After you are done pigging out at lunch or supper treat yourself to a complimentary ice cream cone!

I’ve done a few breakfasts here, and the morning fare has a lot of room for improvement relative to lunch time. Breakfast Tacos: rate a good 3, packed with eggs, the meat of your choice, and allegedly cheese that you can neither see, taste, or detect texture. A decent value at $ 1.95 each. Breakfast fried pies: I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese, at half of it, and did not detect a whisper of bacon, and the cheese was as present as that referenced above in the breakfast taco description. I decided to give the ladies in the kitchen some feedback that the bacon did not exist in the breakfast pie claiming bacon as a core ingredient. She explained to me that they were pre-made, going to the cooler and pulling out a wad of yellow goo wrapped in cellophane, and that sometimes no bacon made it in. Being a conscientious consumer, I asked for some bacon, and they warmed me up some and plopped a pile of it next to my half eaten pie. Thanks :-\ For $ 3.75, unless you’re a big fan of fried pie crust, I recommend two tacos, a far better dining experience and value. I will return for tacos as long as I work two blocks away, but that is all that is worth eating here IMO, in the morning hours.

I walked all of the way from my hotel downtown to only be disappointed. I ordered the rib plate with mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was from a can and the ribs were dry, flavorless and full of fat. The sauce(which is highly touted by Baker’s) was not good or reminiscent of Saint Louis BBQ. I walked home and immediately felt sick. For $ 16(included a Shiner Bock) you would expect some good experience. Stay away!

Like Scott said, this place is dominated by the Fried Pies side of the business and they make up most of the check our display. The ribs here are literally fall off the bone onto the plate when you lift them to your mouth tender. They do not taste like they were cooked in an oven which many places do. Their BBQ sauce is outstanding and a perfect companion to the ribs. Their baked potato is amazing as well. Even if you don’t get it stuffed with brisket. It comes heavily seasoned in a salt and pepper crust that is outstanding!

My BBQ brisket craze led me, zombie like, here. Brrrraaa — iiiissskkkkeeeetttt !!! I heard that this place was really known for ribs, but that the brisket was decent, and I’m a brisket fan. This place is essentially no thrills. The fried pies dominant the in house display and signage on the way in, might make you think you’re in the wrong place. The fried pies look like a funnel cake, but have different flavors and were very tempting. I deliriously ordered the brisket sandwich and a shiner. What a Texas meal. The white bread slices I requested shrunk around the fatty chunks of brisket with a succulent taste and moist meat that satisfactorily sated my zombi-tex appetite. I barely remember much of the brisket because I consumed it quick. But I’d say Thick fatty cuts and top taste describes it. Their BBQ sauce is great with added spice. I’m normally a lean thin sliced brisket dude, but I’ll give you fatty cues some props here. Atmosphere — country-stop sho down. Brisket — fatty thick and flavorful — perhaps A little to fatty. Prices — good value, lots of specials. Red checkered plastic table clothes, a cop clientele and really good BBQ all on the edge of artsy deep Ellum.
