Del Norte County Historical Society

This is a highly recommended stop if you’re interested in northern California history — it’s far above par for a local historical society or a small-​town museum. The museum covers Del Norte County from settlement to recent history. It has so many things you might not expect to find: excellent exhibits and amazing artifacts from local Native tribes (check out those baskets!), reasonably fair-​minded coverage of ugly moments in California history (an in-​depth discussion of the race riots that ran Chinese laborers out of town), and all the artifacts and keepsakes you’d expect from the local white population’s history (military uniforms, pipes and tobacco, farming implements and tools, chainsaws and auto repair, and the mammoth Fresnel lens from the local lighthouse). Don’t miss this place — it’s well worth a stop on a northern CA road trip.
