Great experience, friendly staff. Super haircut by Richard. If you have curly hair this is your place. Salons opening in Newport & Providence 2016

I have been going to Richard for several years. Simply put, you will get a Boston level precision cut(and experience) for half the price here. The salon is really neat inside in addition to being very clean. Have always been accommodated on short notice too. I found it kind of funny that all the bad reviews on here are from people with Groupons… take it from someone who has been a Unilocal Elite and is not just making a profile to leave a single review about a deal they were not happy with. This salon is worth a shot– the quality is high and the prices are reasonable.

Ok… So I decided to give this place another chance… I called to make an appointment mentioning I had a Groupon for a haircut(all I wanted was just a blow-dry, which according to their prices was twice as expensive than my Groupon). They told me to go in and that there were any problems. So I was pretty impressed considering I called at noon and they were able to give me an appointment at 5pm same day. Once I got there they told me I couldn’t use it cause I wasn’t a new client. I told them I mentioned on the phone I had already been there… They didn’t want to hear it. I left and I AM def NOT going back this time

Just visited again for my pre-Christmas trim! The service was fantastic, as usual. The salon was busy, but the staff was very professional and friendly(as always!), and I did not feel rushed, or as if my appointment was less of a priority. Jon Richard Salon still has my vote!

I have been coming to Jon Richard Salon for 7 years with Liz as my colorist and stylist and Laura as my esthetician. The atmosphere is always comfortable and the staff are welcoming. It is definitely a professional salon that takes pride in the education of the stylists and staying on top of the newest research and trends. I would highly recommend JRS to all my friends. Im sure you will not be disappointed.

LOVE this place! Rachael Pine has been my hair dresser for years. She just recently took a job here, so I visited over the weekend to touch up my color. If your blonde, and want to get rid of the yellow/brassy color another hair dresser gave you, book with Rachael! She’s done flawless work on a reverse ombré and low lighting my hair also! The salon is SO clean and the customer service is great! You won’t be rushed and you’ll leave with a fabulous new do. Prices are reasonable and Parking in the rear is super convenient.

I always feel a pang of guilt while leaving poor reviews for local businesses, but here it goes: The good: Friendly staff The bad: Shady business practices vis-a-vis LivingSocial/Groupon vouchers. I picked up a LivingSocial deal good for $ 50 of salon services. Before purchasing it, I reviewed Jon Richard’s website and saw that a partial foil was $ 50. Perfect. When I booked, I asked very specifically for a partial foil. When I checked in, they confirmed I was here for a partial foil. My service was okay. I’m not totally in love but it looks okay in interior lighting. I’m naturally blonde so partial highlights are a breeze. I did ask that toner be used, as I don’t like the straight bleach look. My stylist convinced me not to use toner. I should have put my foot down and said no to straight bleach, but I didn’t so shame on me. When I went to check out, I was informed that I was being charged for a $ 90 foil service(of straight bleach, mind you). Again, shame on me, I just didn’t have the stomach to call them out on this very apparent up-charge and get into an argument. Instead, I won’t go back and I’m warning people on Unilocal who may be considering purchasing a Groupon voucher. In sum: If these had truly been a $ 25 service(after the voucher), I wouldn’t complain, but my suspicion is that you will not be giving accurate or good service if you present with a voucher. Overall, the staff is friendly, but my stylist should be more attuned to me not liking straight bleach instead of convincing me that she would do it in such a way that it wouldn’t look like straight bleach. I should have advocated for myself more, but this is my down-time and after having to be assertive at work, I do not want to be bullied by a salon and have to get in their faces about $ 40. Just left with a bad taste in my mouth.

This was a nice small salon. We are new to the Cranston area and purchased a few Groupons to try this place out. The reception staff was excellent and our stylist was excellent. I received a great cut, color and style. My other half received the best haircut in a while. I am very pleased with the richness of the color and my stylist seemed extremely knowledgeable. They are a bit more pricey than some of the other salon prices we have seen online for basic services. If their waxing and spray tan prices were a wee bit lower, I would be more inclined to get everything done there vs. running to different locations to get different things done. I would have given them 5 stars if they had better parking and prices were about $ 5 – 10 dollars lower on certain services. They have very limited parking in the back after 5PM. I had to park my Jaguar in the Burger King parking lot with a bunch of thugs hanging out and looking us up and down. This made me kind of nervous. Other than that, it was a good experience. Update: I called back to get a quote for highlights on the phone. They could not give me this and said they did not have a set price and that I would have to come in for the service to see how much it would be. I found this to be curious and asked the receptionist if she was sure as every other place was able to tell me via the phone. She confirmed, this was the way they run things there. This does not make me so keen to want to go back. Nice people, but I am not going to waste my time or anyone else to go through all the trouble to go there and sit in a chair to find out I have to walk out if the hair appointment will be more than my car payment. There are lots of options in Cranston and with the lack of parking this did not impress me so I have downgraded it to 3 stars.

I have gone often to OUIDAD in NYC many times and the style is superior. Moving back here JR claims to be OUIDAD certified. Well, he is not. My hair did not even look remotely like it does in NYC. He didn’t use the clips, or hairdryer. He claimed that he didn’t need to. My hair was flat and lifeless. I was so disappointed and angry. I wish OUIDAD would investigate these salons and deny them the right to do this!

I am so disappointed with my visit to Jon Richard salon that I am shaking. I purchased a $ 40 groupon(apparently my first mistake) for a «cut, style, and single-process color». I made the appointment for the next day making sure to tell them I had the groupon and would like a cut and color… they were very accommodating and had a lot of openings available which was great. When I arrived the staff were very pleasant and I didn’t have to wait very long. My stylist was Allison, and when I told her about the groupon and what I wanted to have done(a very slight trim and to go a few shades darker than my natural hair color) she told me that unfortunately the groupon can be a bit misleading and«single process color» actually only means a «root touch up»… well my hair is not dyed and I didn’t need a root touch up so I told her to just go ahead with the trim. She said that for $ 55 more I could get the all-over color that I wanted which I found to be a little steep so I said no thank you. Allison was super sweet and apologetic about this and offered me a deep conditioning treatment instead of the«single process color». I really didn’t even want the conditioning treatment because I have greasy hair as it is and my hair is super silky already. But I said OK because at least that way I could feel like I was getting my moneys worth… kind of… Anyways 2 and a half hours later my hair looks almost identical to how it did before the appointment… except for all this gunk in it that actually makes it look dirtier! Allison did her best and was extremely sweet and I tipped her well because it was not her fault that the groupon was so misleading. nevertheless I am beyond pissed. I feel like I wasted my time and money and was taken advantage of. I have NEVER in my life heard of a «single process color» being a «root touch up». Everyone knows that a single process color is a single all-over hair dye. I paid over 50 dollars for a simple trim that I could have gotten at Supercuts for 15 bucks and 10 minutes of my time. This place completely ruined my day off. THANKS!

This review is specifically for the darling hairstylist Sheila: best hair-cut and color in Rhode Island! Sweet and talented, what more can you ask for? I have fine, curly hair that can be styled both curly and straight. Because of this, I need a very particular hair cut: a cut that looks good BOTH straight and curly and gives me volume. I found out Jon Richard Salon offers 20% off your first appointment(check their website!!!). After reading reviews online elsewhere, I decided to make an appointment with Sheila. LOVE Sheila! She honestly gave me the best cut I’ve ever had. She gave my fine hair shape and volume, and my new color is natural but fun. She also helpfully answered all my questions about my hair and gave me tips on what products to buy. What was great, too, she didn’t push me to buy from the salon. She recommended a cheap brush and dryer on Amazon, even! And I totally bought them and love it. My only gripe would be the price tag: my partial weave and cut was $ 115 even AFTER the discount. I am actually wondering if they didn’t include the discount in my final total, because I had called ahead of time and was quoted a lower price. Ladies and gentlemen, always ask for a receipt! Other than that, the Salon experience was great, and I am definitely returning!

I’ve been getting my hair cut by Jon since I was in high school(so…roughly 15 years). I have pretty light, thick hair which I always had an issue with other people butchering in the past. Always happy when I leave here, though. Prices are very resonable. The staff is always nice(and nice to look at), and they have their own product line now. I use the gel and yeah it costs $ 20 a tube but it holds incredibly well! It even holds the following day for a slightly messy«bed head» look(if you like that… and, not gonna lie, I think I can rock). It also smells pretty good.

I swear by this place and the Ouidad curly hair cut! I found this place by chance and I am so happy I did! Richard is the only on in the area certified to give this special hair cut for curly haired people like myself and it’s amazing. The technique is so cool to watch and totally customized for curly haired people. I have had a lot of awful haircuts in my life and it’s understandable because cutting curly hair is SO far from the same as cutting straight hair. I would highly recommend Richard and this cut to my fellow curly que ladies! I’ve never had a problem either overall at the salon. I never wait long upon arriving, the staff are friendly when calling to schedule and the place is always clean!

My experience was different then the previous reviews. I purchased a groupon for 2 shellac manicures. I just had the first manicure and Jamie was awesome. I wanted a very specific design that I had a picture of and she replicated it perfectly. I like that the nail area is private and away from the noise of dryers, etc. Jamie and the manicure get 5 stars for sure, the only reason I gave it a 4 overall was because the time availability wasn’t great. I guess that’s understandable with a groupon and because it’s the holidays. I’ve already booked the next manicure as well as a third and am looking forward to it!

Terrible. I go in to change the color of my hair to a reddish brown color. I LOVE the color in the swatch book, but the stylist says she thinks it won’t look good on me. I thank hr for her opinion but I insist on the color. So she gives me brown hair. Says I will love it, but guess what? I DONT!!! I understand you go to stylist school and spend big bucks to learn how to do what I need done to my hair, but these stylists don’t realize that this is MY hair, and if I want it done a certain way, thats how I want it done! Mr. Richard learned the hard way this afternoon that I am the one with the cash and if I don’t get what I ask for he dosn’t get my cash.

I am very upset with this business. I heard they are a great salon, and purchased a Groupon for a mani-pedi, which expires Aug. 17. When I called for an appointment, they are completely booked until weeks after the expiration date, and will no longer honor the Groupon — nor will they at least credit me the cost of the Groupon toward the full price of a mani-pedi. They’ve been totally unhelpful and now I am out 29 bucks! I have never encountered a business that would not honor a Groupon before. They told me I had a year to use the Groupon and should have called earlier — that’s really useful to know now.

I’ve been here twice. My first appointment was for a cut only and Danielle was my stylist. She was awesome. The cut was awesome. I loved it! Danielle made this salon worthy of 5 stars! At the time I was living in Ohio and traveling to Providence often to visit my now husband. The first appointment with Danielle was in August and I wasn’t coming back to Providence until December that year. She gave me her card and we planned to do another cut plus a color in December. When I returned and called to make an appointment she wasn’t available when I needed to get in, so I made an appointment with another stylist. Okay– so here’s how the 2nd visit went: I arrived, waited a sec, then was led up these STEEP stairs(with no hand rail) to the upper salon. The girl who colored my hair told me that she only had time for the color and when she was done I would go see Jon for the cut.(Sorry Unilocalers, I forgot her name) Anyway, the color was eh, I hardly noticed the highlights I had requested. Also, I only requested a parcial highlight and she didn’t listen and did my entire head, so I had to pay more than I had planned. She was friendly, but not overly nice, so I didn’t really feel that comfortable in her chair. When my color was done, she shuffled me back down the steep stairs(I mention these because I have a slight issue with balance and PWD’s or the elderly might have trouble getting up and down these without proper assistance) to Jon. He was super chatty and nice. The cut was okay. I didn’t hate it or anything, but I didn’t leave there with the confidence that Danielle inspired. I like this place, and in a pinch I would go back, but I am still looking for a salon that has an entire staff that is quality.
