This is a very nice country golf course. Greens are very nice and challenging and in great shape. Fairways are pretty good considering how little rain we’ve had this summer. My complaints are slow play(a 5.5 hour round — never saw a ranger) and not a drop of water to drink on the course. Too bad because this should be a very enjoyable course to play. There are several interesting holes that are unique and fun.

You know you are in the middle nowhere when the sign points down a dirt road with a dense forest on each side. Then, after a couple of minutes, you see a wooden shack that reads«Skungamaug River Golf Course». As you pull into the parking lot, you start to wonder, «I drove 10 minutes in the middle of nowhere to go to this dump?» Well, you are in for a treat.
As you walk in to the club house, you realize that it is not a dump after all. They have a snack bar and an area to sit and watch a game. Also, they have an outdoor area overlooking the course. The pro shop is a full golf store with new clubs, bags and balls. It is very easy to get a tee time, and the course is usually empty, with the exception of a few people. Rates for golfing are fairly low compared to the other course in Coventry, Twin Hills. After you pay, the pro gives you a scorecard, and sends you on your way. If you have a choice, I suggest you play the front nine, since it has three par 3s, and it is just overall easier. On the first tee, you notice how surprising green the course is. Five stars for maintenance! As your round goes on. The terrain gets more hilly, and you really have to stratigicly place your shot, especially on the third hole. I have to take one star off because it gets pretty swampy on the 6th hole and around the ponds. You just have to watch out for that. Now on to the back nine, and this is where it gets tricky. There is much more woods and skinny fairways, so I suggest longer hitters play the back. One example is hole 11. It is just shy of 200 yards, and is uphill with bunkers guarding it. So you pretty much have to hit the green if you are planning on making par. So to recap: cheap fees, good course condition, spacious clubhouse, easy front nice, hard back nine, middle of nowhere. If you want to go on a quest of finding this course, «The Skunk» is the right course for you!
